Interspecific interactions are important drivers of population dynamics and species distribution. These relationships can increase niche partitioning between sympatric species, which can differentiate space and time use or modify their feeding strategies. Roe deer and red deer are two of the most widespread ungulate species in Europe and show spatial and dietary overlap.

Background: Severely ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) show an increased risk of new-onset atrioventricular blocks (AVBs), associated with high rates of short-term mortality. Recent data suggest that the uncontrolled inflammatory activation observed in these patients, specifically interleukin (IL)-6 elevation, may play an important pathogenic role by directly affecting cardiac electrophysiology. The aim of our study was to assess the acute impact of IL-6 changes on electrocardiographic indices of atrioventricular conduction in severe COVID-19.

This study presents a comprehensive revision of the genus Heinrich, 1967. We describe a new species, Dal Pos & Di Giovanni, , from Burundi, marking the first documented occurrence of an Ichneumoninae species in the country. Additionally, we provide the first diagnostic description of the female Heinrich, 1967 and report a new occurrence of this species in KwaZulu-Natal.

Background: Myrmeleontidae are conspicuous insects with moderate species diversity, which are reasonably well studied in Europe. However, dedicated samplings in the Mediterranean region carried out in the last years suggest that the state of knowledge of the representatives of this family occurring in outhern Europe is far from ideal. Over 40 species of antlions and owlflies are reported from Italy, of which a few are only known from the islands of the Sicilian Channel.

Background: The order Isopoda Latreille, 1816 consists of species occurring in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments. In the Southern Ocean (SO), this group is amongst the most speciose and occur at all depths. Isopoda biogeography, despite being studied since the first Antarctic expeditions, is still poorly known from a geographical point of view and shows large occurrence gaps for some groups in specific sectors of the SO.

Background: Distributional data on planktonic, benthic and sympagic copepods collected in the framework of the XXXIV Expeditions of the Italian National Antarctic Programme (PNRA) to the Ross Sea sector from 2018-2019 are here provided. These occurrences correspond to specimens collected from the 25 μm filters used in the desalination plant of the Italian research station "Mario Zucchelli" (MZS), located in the Terra Nova Bay area (TNB; Ross Sea, Antarctica). This dataset is a contribution to the Antarctic Biodiversity Portal, the thematic Antarctic node for both the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (AntOBIS) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Antarctic Biodiversity Information Facility (ANTABIF).

Background: Although accumulating data indicate that IL-6 (interleukin-6) can promote heart rate-corrected QT interval (QTc) prolongation via direct and indirect effects on cardiac electrophysiology, current evidence comes from basic investigations and small clinical studies only. Therefore, IL-6 is still largely ignored in the clinical management of long-QT syndrome and related arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to estimate the risk of QTc prolongation associated with elevated IL-6 levels in a large population of unselected subjects.

Poliovirus infection causes paralysis in up to 1 in 200 infected persons. The use of safe and effective inactivated poliovirus vaccines and live attenuated oral poliovirus vaccines (OPVs) means that only two pockets of wild-type poliovirus type 1 remain, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, OPVs can revert to virulence, causing outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV).

General consensus suggests that even singleton E138A mutations in HIV reverse transcriptase at baseline are associated with resistance to rilpivirine (RPV). We detected 11 pre-existing E138A carriers treated with RPV in the pan European EuResist database. However, all 11 patients presented with full virological efficacy for first-line RPV-based ART regimens.

Investigating the impact of ecological factors on sex- and age-specific vital rates is essential to understand animal population dynamics and detect the potential for interactions between sympatric species. We used block count data and autoregressive linear models to investigate variation in birth rate, kid survival, female survival, and male survival in a population of Alpine chamois monitored over 27 years within the Stelvio National Park, Central Italian Alps, as function of climatic variables, density dependence, and interspecific competition with red deer . We also used path analysis to assess the indirect effect of deer abundance on chamois growth rate mediated by each demographic parameter.

While relationships between habitat features and phenotypic quality are well established at broad geographical scales, information is poor on spatial patterns at finer, intrapopulation scales. We analyzed biometric data collected on 1965 red deer males over 20 years from a nonmigratory population living on two sides of a mountainous ridge, with substantial differences in land cover and habitat quality but similar climate and population density.

In polygynous ungulates, males may achieve fertilization through the use of alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), discrete phenotypic variations evolved to maximize fitness. ARTs are often associated with different male spatial strategies during the rut, from territoriality to female-following. Although variation in space use patterns of rutting male ungulates is known to be largely affected by the spatial distribution of females, information on the year-round habitat selection of alternative reproductive types is scant.

The risk of ventricular arrhythmias is common after left ventricular assist device implantation and is influenced by pre-, peri and post-operative determinants. The management of ventricular arrhythmias can be a challenge when they become refractory to medication or to device therapy and their impact on prognosis can be detrimental despite the mechanical support.

Because of their potent adjuvanticity, ease of manipulation and simplicity of production Gram-negative Outer Membrane Vesicles OMVs have the potential to become a highly effective vaccine platform. However, some optimization is required, including the reduction of the number of endogenous proteins, the increase of the loading capacity with respect to heterologous antigens, the enhancement of productivity in terms of number of vesicles per culture volume. In this work we describe the use of Synthetic Biology to create BL21(DE3)Δ60, a strain releasing OMVs (OMVs) deprived of 59 endogenous proteins.
