Based on a combination of molecular dynamics simulations, and Raman and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopies, we investigate the structure and elastic properties relationship in an archetypical calcium silicate glass system. From molecular dynamics and Raman spectroscopy, we show that the atomic structure at the short and intermediate length scales is made up of long polymerized silicate chains, which adjusts itself by closing the Si-O-Si angles and leaving more space to [CaO] edge shared polyhedra to strengthen the glass. Using Brillouin spectroscopy, we observe an increase of elastic constants of the glass with the calcium content, as the cohesion of the glass structure is enhanced through an increase of the binding between the cross-linked calcium-silicate frameworks.

Salvia officinalis (Lamiaceae) and Lippia triphylla (Verbenaceae) are two plants known for their therapeutic effects in conventional medicine for the treatment of a wide extent of diseases, including the ones on the central nervous system. In the present study, the impact of aqueous extract from the leaves of these two herbs for the treatment of depression was examined. The phytochemical profile highlighted the presence of eighteen and ten polyphenolic compounds in Salvia officinalis and Lippia triphylla, respectively.

Zantaz honey is a monofloral variety produced from the melliferous plant Bupleurum spinosum (Apiaceae), a shrub that grows mainly in the Atlas Moroccan Mountains. Determination of the polyphenol composition revealed that methyl syringate accounts for more than 50% of total polyphenols, which represents a very useful parameter for the characterization of this monofloral honey. Epicatechin, syringic acid and catechin are also abundant.

Effective interventions and treatments for complex diseases have been implemented globally, however, coverage in Africa has been comparatively lower due to lack of capacity, clinical applicability and knowledge on the genetic contribution to disease and treatment. Currently, there is a scarcity of genetic data on African populations, which have enormous genetic diversity. Pharmacogenomics studies have the potential to revolutionise treatment of diseases, therefore, African populations are likely to benefit from these approaches to identify likely responders, reduce adverse side effects and optimise drug dosing.
