We hypothesized that maternal low or high nutrition would give unique effects to morphological and molecular dynamics in adipose tissue of fetus of fatty breed Wagyu (Japanese Black) cattle which produce highly marbled beef. This study aimed to determine the effects of maternal energy intake in Wagyu cows, during gestation on fetal adipose tissue development, histochemical properties, and gene and microRNA (miRNA) expression. Cows were allocated to one of two nutritional energy groups: 120% (HIGH) or 60% nutritional requirements of (LOW).

We examined the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) on the mTORC1 pathway in muscle satellite cells (MSCs) isolated from branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase kinase (BDK) knockout (KO) mice in vitro. MSCs were isolated from BDK KO and wild-type (WT) mice, proliferated, and differentiated into myotubes. BCAA stimulation increased the phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase (p70S6K), a marker of protein translation initiation, in MSCs from WT and BDK KO mice, but the rate of the increase was higher in MSCs isolated from BDK KO mice.

During the self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules, linkers and substituents can potentially add supportive noncovalent intermolecular interactions to π-stacking interactions. Here, we report the self-assembly behavior of thienopyrrole-fused thiadiazole (TPT) fluorescent dyes that possess ester or ether linkers and dodecyloxy side chains in solution and the condensed phase. A comparison of the self-association behavior of the ester- and ether-bridged compounds in solution using detailed UV-vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the subtle replacement of the ether linkers by ester linkers leads to a distinct increase in the association constant (ca.

Department of Energy, Environment and Health, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid, ICMM/CSIC, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz 3, 28049 Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

Elucidation of reaction mechanisms in forming nanostructures is relevant to obtain robust and affordable protocols that can lead to materials with enhanced properties and good reproducibility. Here, the formation of magnetic iron oxide monocrystalline nanoflowers in polyol solvents using N-methyldiethanolamine (NMDEA) as co-solvent has been shown to occur through a non-classical crystallization pathway. This pathway involves intermediate mesocrystals that, in addition, can be transformed into large single colloidal nanocrystals.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are natural bifidogenic prebiotics, were recently commercialized to fortify formula milk. However, HMO assimilation phenotypes of bifidobacteria vary by species and strain, which has not been fully linked to strain genotype. We have recently shown that specialized uptake systems, particularly for the internalization of major HMOs (fucosyllactose [FL]), are associated with the formation of a -rich gut microbial community.

Nutritional Factors That Affect the Formation of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, a Key Intermediate of Heme Biosynthesis.

J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo)

November 2021

Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Konan Women's University.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a key intermediate of heme biosynthesis, which is an essential component of the respiratory chain. Therefore, nutrients that affect ALA biosynthesis eventually affect ATP production, which is the basis of mitochondrial function. Although the effects of various non-nutrient components that affect ALA after biosynthesis have been reported, there are few reports on the effects of dietary amino acids/protein on ALA formation and the effects of dietary vitamins that are involved in amino acid metabolism.

The free will and determinism-plus scale (FAD-Plus) is one of the most widely used scales to assess the lay belief of people in the existence of free will and deterministic world views. Past research has translated FAD-Plus into various languages for non-English speaking populations, and there exist two Japanese translations of FAD-Plus: the FAD+ and the FAD-J. This study aimed to compare the psychometric properties of FAD+ and FAD-J.

Article Synopsis
  • Reproductive interference (RI) can negatively impact the fitness of plant species by causing them to accept incompatible pollen, which leads to fewer successful fertilizations.
  • Hand-pollination experiments across six populations of three native Taraxacum species revealed varying degrees of pollen tube penetration from heterospecific (alien) pollen, indicating that stronger RI does not always correlate with more consistent pollen receptivity among individual plants.
  • While the study supports the ovule usurpation hypothesis, it also highlights that other factors, like competition for pollinators and the condition of flowers, might influence the effects of RI.

Poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) nanogels were prepared by emulsion polymerization using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and employed as a capping agent in platinum nanoparticle (Pt NP) synthesis by liquid-phase reduction with hydrogen gas. When the PNIPAM nanogels were used without removing SDS, that is, a slight amount of SDS was included in the reaction solution, Pt nanocubes (NCs) were predominantly produced (>80%). The proportion of the resultant Pt NCs was much higher than that obtained using the PNIPAM linear polymer (∼60%).

trans Single-Stranded DNA Cleavage via CRISPR/Cas14a1 Activated by Target RNA without Destruction.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

November 2021

Department of Chemistry, Key Laboratory of Bioorganic Phosphorus Chemistry & Chemical Biology, Tsinghua University, Beijing, 100084, China.

As a CRISPR-Cas system (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and CRISPR associated proteins), Cas14a1 can cis/trans cleave single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Here, we describe an unreported capacity of Cas14a1: RNA can trigger the trans ssDNA cleavage. This Cas14a1-based RNA-activated detection platform (Amplification, Transcription, Cas14a1-based RNA-activated trans ssDNA cleavage, ATCas-RNA) has an outstanding specificity for the detection of target RNAs with point mutation resolution, which is better than that of the Cas14a1-based ssDNA-activation.

S,C,C- and O,C,C-Bridged Triarylamines and Their Persistent Radical Cations.

J Org Chem

September 2021

Department of Materials Science, School of Engineering, The University of Shiga Prefecture, 2500 Hassaka-cho, Hikone, Shiga 522-8533, Japan.

This work reports the synthesis, crystal structures, and electronic properties of structurally constrained S,C,C- and O,C,C-bridged triarylamine derivatives and their persistent radical cations. O,C,C-Bridged triphenylamines and a dinaphthylphenylamine were obtained through a straightforward synthetic protocol. Similar to a previously reported S,C,C-bridged triphenylamine, the O,C,C-bridged triarylamines were easily oxidized to afford the corresponding radical cations, which were obtained as hexachloroantimonate salts.

Bimetallic nanomaterials have attracted much attention from various fields such as catalysis, optics, magnetism, and so forth. The functionality of such particles is influenced very much by the intermetallic interactions than their individual contribution. However, compared with the synthesis of monometallic nanoparticles, the reaction parameters that need to be controlled for tuning the size, shape, composition, and crystal structure of bimetallic nanoparticles becomes challenging.

High-intensity muscle contractions (HiMCs) are known to increase c-Myc expression that is known to stimulate ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis in most cells. However, although c-Myc mRNA transcription and c-Myc mRNA translation have been shown to be upregulated following resistance exercise concomitantly with increased ribosome biogenesis, this connection has not been tested directly. We investigated the effect of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated c-Myc overexpression, with or without fasting or percutaneous electrical stimulation-induced HiMC, on ribosome biogenesis and protein synthesis in adult mouse skeletal muscles.

Soil Science Laboratory, Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University, 1 Rokkodai, Nada, Kobe, Hyogo 657-8501, Japan. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Mangroves play a crucial role in carbon storage, but many regions lack detailed data on their soil organic carbon (SOC), particularly in deep soils.
  • A study in a Trat mangrove forest in Thailand found that the SOC stock was four times higher than previous estimates for Thai mangroves, indicating significant carbon storage potential comparable to other Indo-Pacific mangrove forests.
  • The study also revealed that SOC composition varies by tree species and soil depth, with root abundance being a key factor influencing SOC characteristics, while surface soil is mainly affected by recent vegetation.

Background: During lipolysis, triglyceride (TG) are hydrolyzed into a glycerol and fatty acids in adipocyte. A significant portion of the fatty acids are re-esterificated into TG, and this is a critical step in promoting lipolysis. Although glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) is required for triglyceride synthesis in mammalian cell, the substrate for G3P synthesis during active lipolysis is not known.

Dietary content during pregnancy is important because it is necessary for the growth of the fetus. With the assumption that the nutritional status of the fetus can be monitored by measuring amino acid concentrations in the amniotic fluid, we investigated whether the habitual dietary intake of pregnant women affected the composition of the amniotic fluid and the significance of performing amniotic fluid analysis. The subjects were 34 mothers who delivered full-term babies by cesarean section.
