We demonstrate that the modified Kempers model, a recently developed theoretical model for the Soret effect in oxide melts, is applicable for predicting the composition dependence of the Soret coefficient in three binary molecular liquids with negative enthalpies of mixing. We compared the theoretical and experimental values for water/ethanol, water/methanol, water/ethylene glycol, water/acetone, and benzene/n-heptane mixtures. In water/ethanol, water/methanol, and water/ethylene glycol, which have negative enthalpies of mixing across the entire mole fraction range, the modified Kempers model successfully predicts the sign change of the Soret coefficient with high accuracy, whereas, in water/acetone and benzene/n-heptane, which have composition ranges with positive enthalpies of mixing, it cannot predict the sign change of the Soret coefficient.

The number of patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has been rising significantly over the last several decades and is one of the most frequent causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States. Hyperglycemia accelerates development of DKD, a direct result of increased intracellular glucose availability. Two large clinical studies, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial in type 1 diabetes and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study in type 2 diabetes showed that intensive glycemic control delayed the onset and the progression of DKD.

Co-Ni alloy nanoparticles, a potential candidate for microwave absorption material, were successfully synthesized by tuning the reduction timing of Co and Ni ions by introducing oleylamine as a complexing agent and 1-heptanol as a reducing solvent. The formation mechanism elucidated using time-resolved sampling and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry measurements suggested that the delay in the reduction of Co ions via complexation with oleylamine facilitated the co-reduction of Co with Ni ions and led to the formation of Co-Ni alloys. The successful synthesis of Co-Ni alloys experimentally confirmed the differences in magnetic properties between alloy and core-shell structured CoNi particles.

Hesperetin, a predominant flavonoid found in citrus fruits, has received considerable attention for its potential anticancer activity through the reduction of cell viability and the induction of apoptosis. Several effector mechanisms have been demonstrated underlying the antitumor properties of hesperetin but its specific mechanisms have not yet been fully elucidated. Preliminary evidence suggests that daydreaming about other people has adaptive value in daily social lives. To address this possibility, we examined whether daydreaming plays a role in maintaining close, stable relationships using a 1-year prospective longitudinal study. We found that individuals' propensity to daydream about their marital partner is separate to general daydreaming.

Bifidobacteria are among the first colonizers of the infant gut, and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) in breastmilk are instrumental for the formation of a bifidobacteria-rich microbiota. However, little is known about the assembly of bifidobacterial communities. Here, by applying assembly theory to a community of four representative infant-gut associated Bifidobacterium species that employ varied strategies for HMO consumption, we show that arrival order and sugar consumption phenotypes significantly affected community formation.

Sesamin is a furofran lignan that is conventionally extracted from Sesamum seeds and shows anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in the human liver. Four difluorenoheteroles having a central quinoidal core with the heteroring varying as furan, thiophene, its dioxide derivative and pyrrole have shown to be medium character diradicals. Solid-state structures, optical, photophysical, magnetic, and electrochemical properties have been discussed in terms of diradical character, variation of aromatic character and captodative effects (electron affinity). Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have been prepared, showing balanced hole and electron mobilities of the order of 10 cm V s or ambipolar charge transport which is first inferred from their redox amphoterism.

Using a laser-induced local-heating experiment combined with temperature analysis, we observed the composition-dependent sign inversion of the Soret coefficient of SiO in binary silicate melts, which was successfully explained by a modified Kempers model used for describing the Soret effect in oxide melts. In particular, the diffusion of SiO to the cold side under a temperature gradient, which is an anomaly in silicate melts, was observed in the SiO-poor compositions. The theoretical model indicates that the thermodynamic mixing properties of oxides, partial molar enthalpy of mixing, and partial molar volume are the dominant factors for determining the migration direction of the SiO component under a temperature gradient.

A series of ethylene copolymers with long-chain α-olefins [LCAOs, 1-dodecene (DD), 1-tetradecene (TD), 1-hexadecene (HD)] and various LCAO contents were prepared, and their thermal properties, including effects of LCAO content and side chain length, were explored. The Cp*TiCl(O-2,6- Pr-4-SiEt-CH)-MAO catalyst system afforded rather high-molecular-weight copolymers with unimodal molecular weight distributions and uniform compositions (confirmed by DSC thermograms). In addition to the melting temperatures ( values) corresponding to the so-called main chain crystallization (samples with low LCAO contents, the value decreased upon increasing the LCAO content) and the side chain crystallization [polymer samples with high LCAO contents, by intermolecular interaction of side chains as observed in poly(DD), poly(TD), and poly(HD)], the other value was observed, especially in poly(ethylene--HD)s (assumed to be due to co-crystallization of the branch and the main chain through an interaction of the main chain and the long side chains).
