Although several studies have shown that scorpion venoms cause a systemic inflammatory response syndrome, little is known about the contribution of the hematopoietic organs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Androctonus australis hector venom on the bone marrow and on local inflammatory mediators, in concordance with the systemic inflammatory reaction elicited in mice. The consequences of a direct interaction of venom with murine bone marrow cells were also assessed by in vitro study.

University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), Faculty of Biological Sciences, Cellular and Molecular Biology Laboratory, Cytokines and NO Synthases, Immunity and Pathogeny Team, Algiers, Algeria. Electronic address:

We aimed to investigate preventive effects of All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced aged neuroinflammation model. We analyzed behavior, systemic nitric oxide (NO) production, cerebral NO synthase (NOS2) and β-amyloid (Aβ) 1-42 expression and tissue integrity in the neuroinflammation model pretreated with ATRA (150μg/ml/rat/day) for 30days. Our results showed that LPS treatment (500μg/kg/day) for 7days disturbed memory, enhanced systemic NO production, NOS2 and Aβ 1-42 cerebral expression and generated an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like neuronal degeneration.

When compared to the European guidelines, PM (particulate matter up to 10-μm size) concentrations in Algeria are often exceeding the maximum limits, and in general, no information exists on the compounds bound on its surface. The objective of this study was to measure the dioxin-like activity of polychlorinated dibenzodioxines and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the PM fraction at the Sour El Ghozlane cement plant in Algeria. PM samples (n = 23) were taken between 24 March and 15 April 2013, using a medium volume sampler and 47-mm PTFE filters.

Aims: To compare the effects of a high-energy diet (HED) with those of a low-energy diet (LED) on biochemical parameters, microparticle (MP) subpopulations and endothelial caveolin-1 (cav-1) protein expression in Psammomys obesus (P. obesus).

Methods: After 12weeks of feeding with either the HED or LED, fasting plasma glucose and lipid parameters were measured using an enzymatic colorimetric kit while serum insulin concentration was determined with radioimmunoassay kits.

Trace elements profile is associated with insulin resistance syndrome and oxidative damage in thyroid disorders: Manganese and selenium interest in Algerian participants with dysthyroidism.

J Trace Elem Med Biol

October 2015

Bioenergetics and Intermediary Metabolism team, Biology and Organisms Physiology laboratory, Biological Sciences Faculty, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), El Alia, Bab Ezzouar, 16123, Algiers, Algeria. Electronic address:

The relationship between dysthyroidism and antioxidant trace elements (ATE) status is very subtle during oxidative stress (OS). This relationship is mediated by thyroid hormone (TH) disorder, insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate ATE such as selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) status on thyroid dysfunction, and their interaction with antioxidant enzyme activities, mainly, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), TH profile (TSH, T(3), T(4)) and IRS clusters.

All-trans-retinoic acid modulates nitric oxide and interleukin-17A production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Neuroimmunomodulation

August 2016

Cytokines and NO Synthases, Immunity and Pathogeny Team, Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LBCM), Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), Algiers, Algeria.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia in the elderly, is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with a complex pathophysiology. It is accepted that inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of AD. All-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) is a bioactive derivative of vitamin A that has shown immunomodulatory effects in many immune disorders.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease is an immunologically mediated disease. Notably, it is less common in countries where there is a greater risk of exposure to helminths. In our study, we examined the modulatory effect of the laminated layer extracted from the cyst wall of a helminth parasite, Echinococcus granulosus, on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice.

The desert gerbil, Psammomys obesus, is a unique polygenic animal model of metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, obesity and type 2 diabetes), and these pathological conditions resemble to those in human beings. In this study, the animals were fed ad libitum either a natural diet (ND) which contained desertic halophile plants or a standard laboratory diet (STD) or a diet which contained eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), hence, termed as EPA diet (EPAD). In EPAD, 50% of total lipid content was replaced by EPA oil.

Ion exchange membrane textile bioreactor as a new alternative for drinking water denitrification.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

June 2014

Hydrometallurgy and Inorganic Molecular Chemistry Laboratory, Chemistry Faculty, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), BP 32, El-Alia, Bab-Ezzouar, Algiers, Algeria,

This work enters in the optics of the denitrification of a polluted water by two membrane techniques, the Donnan dialysis (DD) and the ion exchange membrane bioreactor (IEMB), using a conventional barrier, composed by an anion exchange membrane (AEM), and a hybrid barrier, where the AEM is combined to an anion exchange textile (AET). The effects of the hydrodynamic factor and the nature of the carbon source on the transfer and the reduction of nitrate ions were studied. The study results obtained through the DD showed the effectiveness of the hybrid barrier in the recovery and concentration of nitrate ions.

Sciences Chimiques de Rennes, UMR CNRS 6226, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes, Avenue du général Leclerc, CS 50837, 35708 Rennes Cedex 7, France; Université Européenne de Bretagne, 12 Avenue Janvier, 35000 Rennes, France.

The response and efficiency of new sensors for nitrite ions analysis have been studied electrochemically. These sensors were developed by modifying a carbon paste electrode (CPE) with copper (II) complexes formed with commercial (PFHA) and Algerian (YHA) humic acids and their modified compounds with ethylenediamine (EDA) or triethylenetetramine (TETA). The developed mechanism is based on the electrochemical oxidation of NO2(-) on the modified CPE for different nitrite concentrations.

Background: Insulin resistance and oxidative stress are major pathogenic mechanisms leading to chronic liver diseases in diabetic subjects. The gerbil Psammomys obesus is a unique model of nutritional diabetes resembling the disease in humans. This study investigated whether the natural ingredient silibinin, known as hepatoprotective, could decrease oxidative stress and reduce liver damage in obese gerbils.

The wintertime concentrations and diel cycles of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated to atmospheric particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter lesser than 10 μm were determined at the biggest student residence in Algeria located in Bab-Ezzouar, 15 km southeast from Algiers city area. Samplings were carried out from December 2009 to March 2010, and organic compounds were characterized using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometric detection. Volatile PAHs were also monitored inside some student residence rooms in order to evaluate the impact of indoor air pollution to student health.
