The Houbara bustard (Jacquin, 1784) is an emblematic and endangered bird of steppes and desert spaces of North Africa. This species belonging to Otidiformes is recognized as vulnerable by the International Union for Nature Conservation. The critical situation of this species and the revision of its classification on the tree of birds encouraged the authors to start accumulating chromosome data.

This study investigated the potential of gadolinium chloride (GdCl), an inhibitor of kupffer cells on the myeloperoxidase (MPO) function, both in vivo on colon inflammation model and in vitro on thioglycollate-elicited peritoneal neutrophils. Colon inflammation was induced in mice (n = 7) by 4% acetic acid (AA) enema. GdCl (10 mg/kg) treatment was given 24 h before AA challenge.

Objectives: The tissue renin-angiotensin system (tRAS) plays a key role in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis but is also implicated in atherosclerosis. Thyroid hormone (TH) contributes, via genomic effects, to control of tRAS gene expression in the arterial wall and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). We investigated the specific functions of TH receptors-α and -β (TRα and TRβ) on tRAS gene expression in the aorta and VSMCs, and the potential protective effect of TRα against atherosclerosis.

Ultrasonographic examination, either as visual inspection or quantitative analysis, is the most widely diagnostic resource. However, speckle noise is one of the drawbacks that makes it less effective than other medical imaging systems. Several speckle reduction methods often offer effective speckle reduction but generally suffer from oversmoothing, a blurring effect and a man-made appearance.

Background: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) represents a chronic, systemic autoimmune disorder, characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, inducing compromised secretory function and tissue destruction. Increasing evidence had revealed that inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, are critical in the development and perpetuation of pSS systemic manifestations. In our current study, we aimed to investigate the ex vivo immunomodulatory effect of interferon (IFN)-β on iNOS expression, as well as on pro-inflammatory (tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6) and immunoregulatory (IL-10) cytokine production.

Propolis modulates NOS2/arginase-1 pathway in tropomyosin-induced experimental autoimmune uveitis.

Inflammopharmacology

October 2018

Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology (LBCM), Faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene (USTHB), BP 32 El-Alia Bab-Ezzouar, Algiers, Algeria.

In this study, we evaluated the preventive and curative effects of ethanolic extract of Propolis (EEP) during α-Tropomyosin-induced uveitis in an experimental model using Wistar rats, through the regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (NOS2) and arginase-1. In this context, rats received daily injection of EEP (100 mg/kg) for 5 days prior to immunization or for 9 days commencing 5 days post immunization with α-Tropomyosin extract, then were sacrificed at day 14. Histological examination, NOS2, arginase-1, and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) expression were evaluated in the retinas.

Zinc is a trace element widely known for its marked antioxidant properties. To gain more insight into the site- and time- specific mechanisms by which it induces chemoprevention, this study was elaborated over a pre-cancerous model of colon carcinogenesis. Colon cancer was induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) in mice (20 mg/kg for 2 weeks) and groups of animals were supplemented with or without zinc sulfate (ZnSO, 200 mg/L) in drinking water for 4, 10 or 14 weeks.

Celiac Disease (CeD) is a chronic immune-mediated enteropathy, in which dietary gluten induces an inflammatory reaction, predominantly in the duodenum. Propolis is a resinous hive product, collected by honeybees from various plant sources. Propolis is well-known for its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory effects, due to its major compounds, polyphenols and flavonoids.

Spirulina platensis, is an alga rich in phycocyanin (potent antioxidant), is effective in regulating the balance of oxidative stress. The objective of this study is to observe the impact of ingestion of a highly oxidised vegetable oil, by rats of Wistar strain. Finally, we observe the effect of Spirulina used as an antioxidant treatment, on rats having ingested a diet rich in highly oxidised oil.

A simple analytical method for quantitative determination of an anionic surfactant in aqueous solutions without liquid-liquid extraction is described. The method is based on the formation of a green-colored ion associate between sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) and cationic dye, Brilliant Green (BG) in acidic medium. Spectral changes of the dye by addition of SDBS are studied by visible spectrophotometry at maximum wave length of 627 nm.

Study of the formation of soluble complexes of sodium caseinate and xanthan in solution.

J Food Sci Technol

September 2017

Laboratory of Functional Organic Analysis, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene USTHB, BP 32, El Alia, BabEzzouar, 16111 Algiers, Algeria.

The main objective of this work was to determinate the optimum conditions for the formation of soluble complexes between sodium caseinate and xanthan in solution at neutral pH, in the presence of the NaCl. The study of the influence of the concentrations of these three substances showed that salt was the most influent factor. It worsens the thermodynamic incompatibility of the two biopolymers in solution, when they are present at large amounts.

Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory multisystemic disorder associated with orogenital ulcers, uveitis and skin lesions with unpredictable episodes of exacerbations and remissions. Even though several immunological and environmental factors contribute to BD progression, its ethiopathogenesis remains uncertain and elusive. Considered as one of the potent environmental factors that can increase prevalence of some autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to several diseases as BD.
