The hemostatic system prevents and stops bleeding, maintaining circulatory integrity after injury. It directly interacts with the complement system, which is key to innate immunity. In coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), dysregulation of the hemostatic and complement systems has been associated with several complications.

Laetrile is a semi-synthesis product of amygdalin, whereas amygdalin is a naturally occurring substance in many plants. Both compounds have a nitrile functional group that, when activated by the intestinal enzyme β-glucosidases, releases hydrogen cyanide.

The CompSafeNano project, a Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) project funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, aims to advance the safety and innovation potential of nanomaterials (NMs) by integrating cutting-edge nanoinformatics, computational modelling, and predictive toxicology to enable design of safer NMs at the earliest stage of materials development. The project leverages Safe-by-Design (SbD) principles to ensure the development of inherently safer NMs, enhancing both regulatory compliance and international collaboration. By building on established nanoinformatics frameworks, such as those developed in the H2020-funded projects NanoSolveIT and NanoCommons, CompSafeNano addresses critical challenges in nanosafety through development and integration of innovative methodologies, including advanced models, approaches including machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven predictive models and 1st-principles computational modelling of NMs properties, interactions and effects on living systems.

The growing demand for efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly photovoltaic technologies has motivated the exploration of nontoxic perovskite materials such as KGeCl. However, the performance of KGeCl-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) depends heavily on the compatibility of charge transport layers (CTLs) and optimization of device parameters. In this study, six PSC configurations were simulated using SCAPS-1D software, incorporating CTLs such as Alq, CSTO, VO, PB, and SbS.

Objective: The prognosis for severe asthma is poor, and the current treatment options are limited. The methyl-CpG binding domain protein 2 (MBD2) participates in neutrophil-mediated severe asthma through epigenetic regulation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a critical role in the pathogenesis of severe asthma.

Prions are assemblies of misfolded prion protein that cause several fatal and transmissible neurodegenerative diseases, with the most common phenotype in humans being sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). Aside from variation of the prion protein itself, molecular risk factors are not well understood. Prion and prion-like mechanisms are thought to underpin common neurodegenerative disorders meaning that the elucidation of mechanisms could have broad relevance.

Effluents containing synthetic anionic dyes can pose a risk to ecosystems, and they must be treated before their release to the environment. Biosorption, a simple and effective process, may be a promising solution for treating these effluents. In this work, chitosan beads were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin to produce a highly stable and performant biosorbent to remove Brilliant Blue FCF dye.

Welding-induced residual stress has the capacity to significantly compromise the integrity of mechanical components. Its minimization therefore plays a critical role in the selection of process parameters during the welding process. Friction stir welding is a useful joining technique to weld many materials that are not amenable to the traditional welding techniques.

In Sub-saharan Africa, especially in Ghana, females have traditionally been perceived as homemakers who do not require higher education to play their roles. This phenomenon perpetuates gender inequality, underutilises talents, and denies women opportunities for personal and professional growth.

A novel starch-based emulsion gel was designed via octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) esterification, ozone oxidation, and ion (Ca) induction. The gel properties and low-temperature stability of emulsion gel with different oxidation time (0, 5, 10, 15, 25 min; OW-0, 5, 10, 15, 25) were systematically investigated. FTIR revealed that the oxidation of CC and -OH groups in OW-0 by ozone oxidation led to their cleavage into carbonyl groups, and than transformed to carboxyl groups.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the primary malignancy affecting the liver and the leading cause of mortality among individuals with cirrhosis. This complex disease is associated with various risk factors, including environmental, pathological, and genetic influences, which dysregulate gene expression crucial for the cell cycle and cellular/molecular pathways. The disruption of the balance between tumor suppressors and proto-oncogenes amplifies the pathogenic cascade.
