The combustion of fossil fuels and biomass produces pyrogenic organic matter usually known as 'black carbon' (BC), which are transported across the atmosphere as particulate aerosol, eventually deposited on land and oceans. Soil studies have investigated the potential microbial colonization and remineralization of BC particles, but this process has been seldom studied in marine waters. BC provides a significant input of organic carbon to the oceans, yet its fate and role in biogeochemical cycling remains unknown.

Children can get affected by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) while they interact with play area soil/rubber surfacing and exposed to PAHs by dermal contact, inhalation and hand-to-mouth activity. A comparative study has been conducted on PAHs profiling and probable cancer risk of children from PAHs present in uncovered playground surface soil and poured rubber surfaced playground dust. Surface soil and dust samples have been collected from 14 different children parks around the Korea University campus, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

This work proposes an approach for Cu sensing in water which combines the selectivity of the Gly-Gly-His (GGH) peptide probe with the sensitivity of the electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistor (EGOFET). The oligopeptide probe was immobilized onto the gate electrode of the transistor by electrooxidation of the primary amine of the glycine moiety. Cu complexation by the grafted GGH was at first electrochemically evidenced, using cyclic and square wave voltammetries, then it was demonstrated that GGH-functionalized EGOFETs can transduce Cu complexation through a significant threshold voltage shift and therefore a change in drain current.

This study reports the draft genome sequence of the endophytic Streptomyces cavourensis strain YBQ59, produces the antibiotics bafilomycin D, nonactic acid, prelactone B, and 5,11-epoxy-10-cadinanol. The draft genome sequence comprises ∼10.2 Mb, with a GC content of 64% and 8,958 predicted protein-coding genes, of which 14 gene clusters were found to associate with antibiotic biosynthetic pathways.

Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterial human pathogen responsible for the development of trachoma, an infection leading to blindness, and is also the cause of the main bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide. We designed a new inhibitor of this bacterium with, however, some prerequisites using (i) the iron dependency of the bacterium, (ii) a commercially available broad-spectrum antibiotic and (iii) a short synthetic pathway. The corresponding 8-hydroxyquinoline-ciprofloxacin conjugate was evaluated against a panel of pathogenic bacteria, including C.

The objective of this study was to develop a simple, inexpensive prototype device for rapid detection of hepatitis B virus (HBV). The device was able to simultaneously amplify, detect and quantify the target HBV DNA. The system was fabricated from a custom-made electrochemical set-up of which the temperature was thermostatically controlled by a water bath.

Flash floods have long been common in Asian cities, with recent increases in urbanization and extreme rainfall driving increasingly severe and frequent events. Floods in urban areas cause significant damage to infrastructure, communities and the environment. Numerical modelling of flood inundation offers detailed information necessary for managing flood risk in such contexts.

The development of low cost, portable diagnostic tools for in-field detection of viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms is in great demand but remains challenging. In this study, a novel approach based on reduced graphene oxide-polyaniline (rGO-PANi) film for the detection of loop-mediated-isothermal-amplification (LAMP) products by means of open circuit potential measurement is proposed. The pH-sensitive conducting polymer PANi was electro-deposited onto rGO coated screen printed electrodes and tuned to be at the emeraldine state at which the pH sensitivity was maximized.

We investigated an Electrolyte-Gated Organic Field-Effect transistor based on poly(N-alkyldiketopyrrolo-pyrrole dithienylthieno[3,2-b]thiophene) as organic semiconductor whose gate electrode was functionalized by electrografting a functional diazonium salt capable to bind an antibody specific to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), an herbicide well-known to be a soil and water pollutant. Molecular docking computations were performed to design the functional diazonium salt to rationalize the antibody capture on the gate surface. Sensing of 2,4-D was performed through a displacement immunoassay.

Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the most frequent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world and for trachoma, the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. Genital chlamydial infection is very common among sexually active young people, and when untreated, leads to serious complications. No vaccine is yet available for this bacterial infection.

Thin layers of oligomers with thickness between 7 and 9 nm were deposited on flat gold electrode surfaces by electrochemical reduction of diazonium reagents, then a Ti(2 nm)/Au top contact was applied to complete a solid-state molecular junction. The molecular layers investigated included donor molecules with relatively high energy HOMO, molecules with high HOMO-LUMO gaps and acceptor molecules with low energy LUMO and terminal alkyl chain. Using an oligo(bisthienylbenzene) based layer, a molecule whose HOMO energy level in a vacuum is close to the Fermi level of the gold bottom electrode, the devices exhibit robust and highly reproducible rectification ratios above 1000 at low voltage (2.

A plasmonic molecular electronic device, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires bridging an ultramicroelectrode and an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate covered by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), has been developed. Light irradiation of this device has a dramatic impact on its conductance. Polymer strands, maintained electrochemically in their oxidized, conducting state, reversibly switch to their insulating state upon irradiation by visible-wavelength light, resulting in a sharp decrease in the conductance.

Several studies have provided evidence of both helpful and harmful effects of TNF on the outcome of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection. Several TNF polymorphisms that are located within non-coding regions have been associated with parasitaemia, mild malaria or severe malaria. We investigated the association of TNF1304 (rs3093664), TNF-308 (rs1800629), TNF-238 (rs361525) and TNF-244 (rs673) with mild malaria and symptomatic maximum parasitaemia in a population-based design (n=310).

Surface grafting from diazonium solutions triggered by localized surface plasmon has been investigated. An organic layer that is 20-30 nm thick is easily grafted onto gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by visible-light illumination in a few minutes without any reducing agent or molecular photocatalyst. Grafting depends on the wavelength and polarization of the incident light.

Of the blue carbon sinks, mangroves have one of the highest organic matter (OM) storage capacities in their soil due to low mineralization processes resulting from waterlogging. However, mangroves are disappearing worldwide because of demographic increases. In addition to the loss of CO fixation, mangrove clearing can strongly affect soil characteristics and C storage.

Background: The African rice was domesticated from its wild relative about 3000 years ago. During the domestication process, panicle complexity changed from a panicle with low complexity in , to a highly branched panicle carrying more seeds in . To understand the basis of this differential panicle development between the two species, we conducted morphological and molecular analyses of early panicle development.

A bottom-up electrochemical process for fabricating conjugated ultrathin layers with tailored switchable properties is developed. Ultrathin layers of covalently grafted oligo(bisthienylbenzene) (oligo(BTB)) are used as switchable organic electrodes, and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) is oxidized on this layer. Adding only a few (less than 3) nanometers of EDOT moieties (5 to 6 units ) completely changes the switching properties of the layer without changing the surface concentration of the electroactive species.
