Water in electrolytes is a double-edged sword in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). While it allows for proton insertion in the cathode, resulting in a significant increase in capacity compared to that of organic ZIBs, it also causes damage to electrodes, leading to performance degradation. To overcome the capacity-stability trade-off, organic solvents containing a small amount of water are proposed to mitigate the harmful effects of water while ensuring sufficient proton insertion.

The molecular orbital (MO) theory is one of the most useful methods to describe the formation of a new chemical bond between two molecules. However, it is less often employed for modelling non-bonded intermolecular interactions because of the small charge-transfer contribution. Here we introduce two simple descriptors, the energy difference () of the HOMO of an electron donor and the LUMO of an acceptor against such HOMO-LUMO overlap integral (), to show that the MO theory could give a unified charge-transfer picture of both bonding and non-bonding interactions for two molecules.

January 2024

Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, University of Science and Technology of China Hefei, Anhui 230026, P. R. China.

Layered compounds characterized by van der Waals gaps are often associated with relatively weak interlayer particle interactions. However, in specific scenarios, these seemingly feeble forces can exert an impact on interlayer interactions through subtle energy fluctuations, which can give rise to a diverse range of physical and chemical properties, particularly intriguing in the context of thermal transport. In this study, taking a natural superlattice composed of alternately stacked PbS and SnS sublayers as a model, we proposed that in a superlattice, there is strong hybridization between acoustic phonons of heavy sublayers and optical phonons of light sublayers.

Laboratory of Chemical Biology, State Key Laboratory of Rare Earth Resource Utilization, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences Changchun Jilin 130022 P. R. China

The ability to regulate mitophagy in a living system with small molecules remains a great challenge. We hypothesize that adding fragments specific to the key autophagosome protein LC3 to mitochondria will mimic receptor-mediated mitophagy, thus engaging the autophagy-lysosome pathway to induce mitochondrial degradation. Herein, we develop a general biochemical approach to modulate mitophagy, dubbed mito-ATTECs, which employ chimera molecules composed of LC3-binding moieties linked to mitochondria-targeting ligands.
