Consensus on the prevention and repair of titanium mesh exposed wound after cranioplasty (2024 edition).

Burns Trauma

October 2024

Institute of Wound Repair and Regeneration Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology School of Medicine, and Department of Wound Repair, Southern University of Science and Technology Hospital, Shenzhen 518055, China.

Titanium mesh exposure after cranioplasty is the most serious complication of this procedure. Although some clinical experience has been gradually accumulated over the years in the diagnosis and treatment of titanium mesh exposure, the treatment is often not standardized and it is difficult to achieve satisfactory repair results due to insufficient understanding of its pathogenesis and concurrent infections. To normalize the diagnosis and treatment of titanium mesh exposed wounds after cranioplasty and improve the therapeutic effect and the quality of life of patients, the Wound Repair Professional Committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association organized an expert discussion based on the literature and current diagnosis and treatment status of titanium mesh exposed wounds after cranioplasty at home and abroad, and reached a consensus on the pathogenesis, preventive measures, and diagnosis and treatment strategies of titanium mesh exposed wounds after cranioplasty to provide reference for relevant clinicians.

Objectives: To investigate the value of CT radiomics combined with radiological features in predicting pathological grade of stage I invasive pulmonary adenocarcinoma (IPA) based on the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) new grading system.

Methods: The preoperative CT images and clinical information of 294 patients with stage I IPA were retrospectively analyzed (159 training set; 69 validation set; 66 test set). Referring to the IASLC new grading system, patients were divided into a low/intermediate-grade group and a high-grade group.

Purpose: The development of "Internet + nursing services" can effectively solve the problem of population aging, and grassroots nurses are the primary providers of such services in rural areas. This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting grassroots nurses' risk perception of "Internet + nursing services" and construct a predictive model.

Patients And Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study of 2220 nurses from 27 secondary hospitals and 36 community health centers in Hubei Province was conducted from August to December 2023 using a multi-stage cluster sampling method.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a fundamental biological process for maintaining cellular equilibrium and regulating development, health, and disease across all living organisms. Among the various types of PCD, apoptosis plays a pivotal role in numerous diseases, notably cancer. Cancer cells frequently develop mechanisms to evade apoptosis, increasing resistance to standard chemotherapy treatments.

Background: Gliomas, particularly glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), are highly aggressive brain tumors that present significant challenges in oncology due to their rapid progression and resistance to conventional therapies. Despite advancements in treatment, the prognosis for patients with GBM remains poor, necessitating the exploration of novel therapeutic approaches. One such emerging strategy is the development of glioma vaccines, which aim to stimulate the immune system to target and destroy tumor cells.

Background: There is paucity of data on the prevalence of novel and traditional cardiovascular risk factors in young women with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the Middle East. We sought to evaluate clinical profiles and prevalence of novel and traditional risk factors in Middle Eastern young women with ASCVD compared with age-matched controls.

Methods: Women 18-50 years of age who have ASCVD were enrolled and each was aged-matched with two women with no ASCVD.

Neurobiological basis of emergence from anesthesia.

Trends Neurosci

May 2024

Department of Medical Neuroscience and SUSTech Center for Pain Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology School of Medicine, Shenzhen, China.

The suppression of consciousness by anesthetics and the emergence of the brain from anesthesia are complex and elusive processes. Anesthetics may exert their inhibitory effects by binding to specific protein targets or through membrane-mediated targets, disrupting neural activity and the integrity and function of neural circuits responsible for signal transmission and conscious perception/subjective experience. Emergence from anesthesia was generally thought to depend on the elimination of the anesthetic from the body.

Background: Preoperative patient education is pivotal in improving patient outcomes during the perioperative phase, involving a thorough explanation of what patients can expect. This enhances adherence and reduces perioperative anxiety. In orthopedics, carpal tunnel syndrome, a common and painful hand condition, is effectively managed through surgical release under local anesthesia.

Purpose: We developed an Infant Retinal Intelligent Diagnosis System (IRIDS), an automated system to aid early diagnosis and monitoring of infantile fundus diseases and health conditions to satisfy urgent needs of ophthalmologists.

Methods: We developed IRIDS by combining convolutional neural networks and transformer structures, using a dataset of 7697 retinal images (1089 infants) from four hospitals. It identifies nine fundus diseases and conditions, namely, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (mild ROP, moderate ROP, and severe ROP), retinoblastoma (RB), retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Coats disease, coloboma of the choroid, congenital retinal fold (CRF), and normal.

Article Synopsis
  • Gene variants, particularly in the SLC26A4 gene, account for over half of nonsyndromic hearing loss, with specific variants like c.919-2A > G being prevalent in East Asian populations.
  • A study involving 1167 patients from Southwest China's Yunnan examined the frequency of two specific SLC26A4 variants among Han Chinese and ethnic minorities, revealing that the c.919-2A > G variant was more common in Han Chinese than in ethnic minorities.
  • Overall, the study found that both variants had lower frequencies in the Yunnan cohort compared to other regions in China, contributing valuable data to the genetic profile of hearing loss in these populations.

Accumulating evidence shows that the disruption of competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks plays a significant role in osteosarcoma (OS) initiation and progression. However, the specific roles and functions of the ceRNAs in OS remain unclear. First, differentially expressed microRNAs (DEMs) were identified by mining the E-MTAB-1136 and GSE28423 datasets.
