Background And Objective: Pulmonary nodule detection and segmentation are currently two primary tasks in analyzing chest computed tomography (Chest CT) in order to detect signs of lung cancer, thereby providing early treatment measures to reduce mortality. Even though there are many proposed methods to reduce false positives for obtaining effective detection results, distinguishing between the pulmonary nodule and background region remains challenging because their biological characteristics are similar and varied in size. The purpose of our work is to propose a method for automatic nodule detection and segmentation in Chest CT by enhancing the feature information of pulmonary nodules.

Global beta-diversity of angiosperm trees is shaped by Quaternary climate change.

Center for Biodiversity Dynamics in a Changing World (BIOCHANGE), Department of Biology, Aarhus University, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark.

As Earth's climate has varied strongly through geological time, studying the impacts of past climate change on biodiversity helps to understand the risks from future climate change. However, it remains unclear how paleoclimate shapes spatial variation in biodiversity. Here, we assessed the influence of Quaternary climate change on spatial dissimilarity in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional composition among neighboring 200-kilometer cells (beta-diversity) for angiosperm trees worldwide.

The new technology development for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash treatment and reuse is urgent due to landfill shortage and environmental effect of leached hazardous substances. Chlorine (Cl) is worth considering due to its high levels in fly ash. In this study, a treatment process of ultrasound combined with organic acid was used to eliminate Cl from fly ash to enhance its properties for reuse.

As semiconductor photocatalysts showing their efficient redox ability upon illumination, new development of materials to enhance the pollution degradation is gaining popularity, especially on their oxidation ability. In this study, a highly stable ternary Fe-ZnO/WO nanocomposite photocatalyst has been synthesized in order to improve charge transfer of photocatalytic oxidation under 30W LED light (425-470 nm) to efficiency degrade the Levofloxacin (LVF) in the solution. This catalyst was characterized and analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, X-ray XPS, UPS, PL, TRPL, LSV, EIS, and Photocurrent.

Background And Aim: Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation, a critical event in liver fibrosis, has been recently shown to be related to autophagy. Determine whether chloroquine (CQ) could affect (i) the activation of HSC in vivo and (ii) the hepatic damage in a mice acute liver injury model.

Methods: The acute liver injury was induced in BALB/c mice by carbon tetrachloride (CCl group); 24 h before and after CCl administration animals were treated by CQ (CCl  + CQ group).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and one of the main causes of dementia. The disease is associated with amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide aggregation forming initial clusters and then fibril structure and plaques. Other neurodegenerative diseases such as type 2 diabetes, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease follow a similar mechanism.

We calculate the plasmon frequency ω and damping rate γ of plasma oscillations in a spin-polarized BLG system. Using the long wavelength approximation for dynamical dielectric function, we obtain an analytical expression for plasmon frequency showing that degree of spin polarization P has negligible effect on the long wavelength plasmon frequency. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the plasmon frequency increases (decreases) noticeably (slightly) with the increase in spin polarization in large (small) wave-vector q region.

Expression and secretion of recombinant proteins in the endotoxin-free bacterium, Bacillus subtilis, has been thoroughly studied, but overexpression in the cytoplasm has been limited to only a few proteins. Here, we used the robust IPTG-inducible promoter, Pgrac212, to overexpress human rhinovirus 3C protease (HRV3C) in the cytoplasm of B. subtilis cells.

The glycine zipper motif at the C-terminus of the β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide have been shown to strongly influence the formation of neurotoxic aggregates. A previous study showed that the G37L mutation dramatically reduces the Aβ toxicity in vivo and in vitro. However, the primary cause and mechanism of the glycine zipper motif on Aβ properties remain unknown.

Of the blue carbon sinks, mangroves have one of the highest organic matter (OM) storage capacities in their soil due to low mineralization processes resulting from waterlogging. However, mangroves are disappearing worldwide because of demographic increases. In addition to the loss of CO fixation, mangrove clearing can strongly affect soil characteristics and C storage.
