DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a commonly used insecticide that is recalcitrant and highly stable in the environment. Currently, DDT residue contamination, especially in agricultural soil, is still a concern in many countries, threatening human health and the environment. Among the approaches to resolve such an issue, novel biodegradation-based methods are now preferred to physicochemical methods, due to the sustainability and the effectiveness of the former.

A series of tetra--acetyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl thioureas 8a-l of substituted 2-aminopyrimidines 4a-l have been designed and synthesized. The latter were prepared from corresponding chalcones 3a-l of -bromoacetophenone and appropriate substituted benzaldehydes by their reaction with guanidine. The target thiourea compounds 8a-l exhibited significant inhibitory activity against enzymes that were related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, including α-amylase, α-glucosidase, DPP-4, and PTP1B.

A series of sulfonyl thioureas 6a-q containing a benzo[d]thiazole ring with an ester functional group was synthesized from corresponding substituted 2-aminobenzo[d]thiazoles 3a-q and p-toluenesulfonyl isothiocyanate. They had remarkable inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), monoamine oxidase (MAO)-A, and MAO-B. Among thioureas, several compounds had notable activity in the order of 6k > 6 h > 6c (AChE), 6j > 6g > 6k (BChE), 6k > 6g > 6f (MAO-A), and 6i > 6k > 6h (MAO-B).

Some substituted thioureas (6a-i) containing a 1,3,4-thiadiazole ring were synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding substituted 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles 3a-i with -toluenesulfonyl isocyanate in a one-pot procedure. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of these sulfonyl thioureas were estimated using a minimum inhibitory concentration protocol. Almost all the thioureas exhibited remarkable antimicrobial activity.

Some substituted glucose-conjugated thioureas containing 1,3-thiazole ring, 4a-h, were synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding substituted 2-amino-4-phenyl-1,3-thiazoles 2a-h with 2,3,4,6-tetra--acetyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl isocyanate. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of these thiazole-containing thioureas were estimated using a minimum inhibitory concentration protocol. Dual-drug delivery systems for anticancer therapy have recently attracted substantial attention due to their potency to overcome limitations of conventional anti-cancer drugs, tackle drug resistance problems, as well as improve the therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we introduced a novel nanogel based on folic acid-gelatin-pluronic P123 (FA-GP-P123) conjugate to simultaneously deliver quercetin (QU) and paclitaxel (PTX) to the targeted tumor. The results indicated that the drug loading capacity of FA-GP-P123 nanogels was significantly higher than that of P123 micelles.

In this study, the click chemistry between N-propargyl derivatives of substituted 4H-pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines and tetra-O-acetyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl azide carried out under catalytic conditions using catalyst CuI@Montmorillonite and additive N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA). The yields of obtained hybrid compounds having 4H-pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine connected to 1H-1,2,3-triazole rings were about 85-94 %. Dam construction across the main flow of an estuary can greatly contribute to a high accumulation of inorganic contaminants. However, it remains unknown to what extend externally available heavy metals are incorporated into biota living in those contaminated environments. In this study, the heavy metal copper was investigated both in the sediment and in the tissues of nematodes taken from the subtidal zone in the Ba Lai estuary where a dam is present, and compared with samples from the dam-free Ham Luong estuary, both part of the Mekong Delta.

Quorum sensing is the process by which microbial cells sense and respond to the co-presence of others in their surrounding, through the detection of their autoinducers associated with gene expression regulation and thereby controlling many physiological processes, such as biofilm formation and/or bioluminescence, etc. In Vibrio bacteria, where quorum sensing is relatively well understood with three commonly known autoinducers (HAI-1, AI-2 and CAI-1), both intra-species and inter-species cell-cell communications occur but no inter-Vibrio-species quorum sensing inhibition has been reported. In this study, by screening bacterial isolated from soil and mud samples in a northern province in Vietnam, we discovered a strain that reduced more than 75% of the bioluminescence of a Vibrio harveyi, with evidence showing that such an inhibition might be associated with quorum sensing inhibition.

Endophytes can generate a cornucopia of marvelous bioactive secondary metabolites useful for mankind but their biodiversity and associations with host plants are still elusive. In this study, we explored the culturable endophytic microorganisms associated with 14 medicinal plants that are of high socio-economic value and/or reportedly endemic to northern Vietnam. Specifically, we isolated the endophytic microorganisms by applying surface sterilization methods and identified them based on morphological and rDNA sequence analyses.

Nanosized multi-drug delivery systems provide synergistic effects between drugs and bioactive compounds, resulting in increased overall efficiency and restricted side effects compared to conventional single-drug chemotherapy. In this study, we develop an amphiphilic heparin-poloxamer P403 (HP403) nanogel that could effectively co-load curcuminoid (Cur) and cisplatin hydrate (CisOH) (HP403@CisOH@Cur) via two loading mechanisms. The HP403 nanogels and HP403@CisOH@Cur nanogels were closely analyzed with H-NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, TEM, and DLS, exhibiting high stability in spherical forms.

Background: Reaction of α,β-unsaturated ketones with o-phenylenediamine afforded corresponding 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,5-benzodiazepines.
Objective: α,β-Unsaturated ketones of 6-acetyl-5-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin are precursors for synthesis of 2,3-dihydro-1H-1,5-benzodiazepines by a reaction with o-phenylenediamine.
Methods: Enones of 6-acetyl-5-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin were prepared from this ketone and (un)substituted benzaldehydes in the presence of piperidine, triethylamine, or pyridine as a catalyst in absolute ethanol with 1:1 molar ratios, respectively.
