Hausmannite is a common low valence Mn oxide mineral, with a distorted spinel structure, in surficial sediments. The performance and stability in atmospheric conditions of organic photovoltaic devices can be improved by the integration of stable and efficient photoactive materials as substituent of the chemically unstable poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), generally used as organic hole transport layer. Promising candidates are p-type transparent conductive oxides, which combine good optoelectronic and a higher mechanical and chemical stability than the organic counterpart. In this work, we synthesize Cu-rich CuCrO thin films by aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition as an efficient alternative to PEDOT:PSS.

The purpose of this study was to test if the lactate exchange (γ1) and removal (γ2) abilities during recovery following short all-out supramaximal exercise correlate with the muscle content of MCT1 and MCT4, the two isoforms of the monocarboxylate transporters family involved in lactate and H(+) co-transport in skeletal muscle. Eighteen lightweight rowers completed a 3-min all-out exercise on rowing ergometer. Blood lactate samples were collected during the subsequent passive recovery to assess an individual blood lactate curve (IBLC).

Very little is currently known about the effects of acute hamstring injury on over-ground sprinting mechanics. The aim of this research was to describe changes in power-force-velocity properties of sprinting in two injury case studies related to hamstring strain management: Case 1: during a repeated sprint task (10 sprints of 40 m) when an injury occurred (5th sprint) in a professional rugby player; and Case 2: prior to (8 days) and after (33 days) an acute hamstring injury in a professional soccer player. A sports radar system was used to measure instantaneous velocity-time data, from which individual mechanical profiles were derived using a recently validated method based on a macroscopic biomechanical model.

To highlight the capacity of one- and two-legged standing protocols when assessing postural behavior induced by a rigid ankle orthosis, 14 healthy individuals stood upright barefoot and wore either an elastic stocking on the preferred leg or a rigid orthosis with or without additional taping in one- or two-legged (TL) conditions. Traditional center-of pressure (CP) measures were evaluated for the total two-feet resultant CP and under the feet (plantar CP). Focusing on the plantar CP displacements under the leg fitted with the various orthoses demonstrated particular postural behaviors for traditional parameters with main effects along the mediolateral axis.

The authors studied the prevalence of heavy drinking among students in 21 developed and developing countries using an anonymous survey of 7,846 male and 9,892 female students aged 17 to 30 years. There were wide variations in the prevalence of drinking among countries, and the highest rates of heavy drinking (defined as 5 or more drinks for men and 4 or more drinks for women on at least 1 occasion over the past 2 weeks) were reported in Belgium, Colombia, Ireland, and Poland (men), and Ireland and England (women). Heavy drinking was associated with living away from home, having a wealthier family background, and having well-educated parents.

Abstract Interactions between natural bacterial assemblages and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were investigated in two complementary batch experiments. In the first, a positive relationship was found between the proportion of electron transport system (ETS) active bacteria and the diversity of DOC in microcosms enriched with an increasing number of organic substrates. In a second experiment, bacterial and nutrient dynamics were measured in microcosms with natural bacterial populations and organic matter from rivers and lakes of different trophic levels.

The utility of fine-grained iron metal in the remediation of water contamined with Atrazine and Parathion was investigated. Batch procedures under water treatment conditions (ambient temperature and pH of approximately 7) indicated that these pesticides degrade rapidly in the presence of iron powder (40-60 mesh, 40 g/l). The decline in the concentration of pesticide was monitored by HPLC.
