Growth patterns and associated endocrine profiles were compared between dominant anovulatory (ADF) and ovulatory follicles (OvF) developing from different waves within and between menstrual cycles in women. Follicular mapping profiles of 49 healthy women of reproductive age and blood samples were obtained every 1-3 days. Sixty-three dominant follicles were classified into wave 1 (W1ADF; n = 8) and wave 2 (W2ADF; n = 6) anovulatory follicles and wave 2 (W2OvF; n = 33) and wave 3 (W3OvF; n = 16) ovulatory follicles.

Objective: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline mutations in the TP53 gene. CNS tumors are the fourth most common tumor type in LFS, and recent screening guidelines demonstrate that early tumor detection is associated with improved long-term survival. However, there is a paucity of data regarding surgical intervention when lesions are identified in asymptomatic patients on surveillance imaging.

The incidence and prevalence of youth-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications are increasing worldwide. Youth-onset T2DM has been reported in all racial and ethnic groups, but Indigenous peoples and people of colour are disproportionately affected. People with youth-onset T2DM often have a more aggressive clinical course than those with adult-onset T2DM or those with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Bullet fragments have been previously observed in the remains and edible portions of big game animals that were harvested using rifles. The fragmentation issue has attracted attention because traditional hunting bullets are more than 70% lead, which is toxic to humans and scavengers in the ecosystem. We prepared gunshot wounds in ballistic gelatin blocks, and then applied synchrotron X-ray imaging technology to the bullet fragmentation process for the first time.

A pediatric patient presented after a gunshot injury to the right shoulder and thorax region, with injuries requiring a thoracotomy, tracheal repair, axillary artery repair, and external fixation of the humerus. A CT scan of the brain showed a metal fragment in the interpeduncular cistern. CT angiography confirmed a pellet occluding the basilar apex.

Purpose: Outcomes following carpal tunnel release (CTR) are generally favorable. When patient satisfaction or symptom resolution is not as expected, understanding what factors contribute to that outcome could allow for strategies targeted at improving results. Our purpose was to determine if measurable mental health factors, specifically resilience and pain catastrophization, correlate with patients' postoperative outcomes following CTR.

Background: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is commonly used to evaluate mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Studies focusing on malignant lymphadenopathy have compared 21- and 22-gauge (21G and 22G, respectively) needles and have not identified an advantage of one needle size over the other in terms of diagnostic yield.
Research Question: Does the 19-gauge (19G) EBUS needle offer greater diagnostic yield and sensitivity vs the 21G and 22G EBUS needles for a diagnosis of sarcoidosis, lymphoma, or mediastinal lymphadenopathy not yet diagnosed?
Study Design And Methods: This study retrospectively examined records of 730 patients from the Stather Canadian Outcomes Registry for Chest Procedures (SCOPE) database who underwent EBUS-TBNA for a diagnosis of suspected sarcoidosis, lymphoma, or mediastinal lymphadenopathy not yet diagnosed.

Unlabelled: The current approach to treating endometriosis is often inadequate or intolerable for many patients. Until more effective therapies are available, we should aim to maximize the effectiveness of our current options. Optimization may be possible by reducing nocebo effects, which are the negative therapeutic effects not directly caused by a treatment.

Background: Most epidemiologic reports focus on lower extremity amputation (LEA) caused specifically by diabetes mellitus. However, narrowing scope disregards the impact of other causes and types of limb amputation (LA) diminishing the true incidence and societal burden. We explored the rates of LEA and upper extremity amputation (UEA) by level of amputation, sex and age over 14 years in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Background: Intimal sarcoma is an exceedingly rare type of primary cardiac tumour. It is characterized by poorly differentiated spindle-shaped cells that can mimic smooth muscle and is strongly associated with MDM2 genetic amplification. Owing to its rarity and non-distinctive histological features, diagnosis remains a significant challenge.

Objectives: To develop and validate a clinical risk score that can accurately quantify the probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients presenting to an emergency department without the need for laboratory testing.
Design: Cohort study of participants in the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network (CCEDRRN) registry. Regression models were fitted to predict a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result using clinical and demographic predictors, as well as an indicator of local SARS-CoV-2 incidence.

We present the case of a 50-year-old man presenting with new heart failure symptoms. He had no evidence of any ischaemic cardiomyopathy, however, further cardiac imaging showed a left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy. He was noted to have muscular weakness and an exhaustive search for associated comorbidities yielded a diagnosis of Becker muscular dystrophy.

A 68-year-old man presented following a cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed by the Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System (LUCAS), a mechanical chest compression device. Investigations revealed an aortic dissection, which was likely an iatrogenic injury from mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation by LUCAS.
