Several APOBEC3 enzymes restrict HIV-1 by deaminating cytosine to form uracil in single-stranded proviral (-)DNA. However, HIV-1 Vif counteracts their activity by inducing their proteasomal degradation. This counteraction by Vif is incomplete, as evidenced by footprints of APOBEC3-mediated mutations within integrated proviral genomes of people living with HIV-1.

Background: Intracerebral schwannomas are rare tumors resembling their peripheral nerve sheath counterparts but localized in the CNS. They are not classified as a separate tumor type in the 2021 WHO classification. This study aimed to compile and characterize these rare neoplasms morphologically and molecularly.

Radiometal chelator conjugation is a cornerstone of radioimmunotherapy (RIT). Continued interest in selective placement of chelators remains an active topic of discussion in the field. With several simple site-specific methods being recently reported, it was of interest to investigate the benefits and potential drawbacks of the site-specific method with a full comparison to a more typical random conjugation method that is currently utilized in clinical applications.

We report a 56-year-old male who developed cutaneous lichen planus (LP) following Vaxzevria (Oxford-AstraZeneca) COVID-19 vaccination. Multiple topical and systemic therapies were tried with limited success; however, partial improvement was observed with narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy. This report adds to the growing evidence of new-onset LP following COVID-19 vaccination and underscores the need for careful reporting, monitoring, and management of vaccine-related adverse effects.

Unlabelled: The lunar environment heliospheric X-ray imager (LEXI) and solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere link explorer (SMILE) will observe the magnetopause motion in soft X-rays to understand dayside reconnection modes as a function of solar wind conditions after their respective launches in the near future. To support their successful science mission, we investigate the relationship between the magnetopause position and the dayside reconnection rate by utilizing super dual auroral radar network (SuperDARN) observations and widely used empirical models of magnetopause position (Shue et al. in J Geophys Res 103:17691-17700.

Background: Vaginal pessaries are a common method of managing pelvic organ prolapse (POP), as well as different types of urinary incontinence, allowing patients to successfully improve overall quality of life. Yet despite their positive attributes, there are several reasons why patients may choose to discontinue using pessaries and proceed with surgery to treat their condition instead. This study aimed to explore patients' experiences of pessary use in treating POP.

Demands for animal products are projected to increase in the future, and animal production is key to agricultural sustainability and food security; consequently, enhancing ruminant livestock production efficiencies in sustainable ways is a major goal for the livestock industry. Developmental programming is the concept that various stressors, including compromised maternal nutrition during critical developmental windows will result in both short- and long-term changes in the offspring. Ruminant models of developmental programming indicate that compromised maternal nutrition, including global under and over-nutrition, macronutrients, and specific micronutrients, including amino acids (Met and Arg), vitamins (folate, B, and choline), and minerals (sulfur, cobalt, and selenium) can alter offspring outcomes.

Objective: Technology can be combined with psychological interventions to support older adults with memory concerns. Using a bi-phasic design, cognitive rehabilitation (CR) was integrated with off-the-shelf technology and delivered to two people with cognitive impairment, and one care partner.
Method: Pre- and post-intervention assessments were completed for all participants.

Introduction: Investigation of bone marrow (BM) trephine biopsies and/or clot sections by CD34 immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing has been used by pathologists for several decades, and its clinical value has been well established with QBEND10 being the most frequently used primary antibody (Ab) clone. However, most other parameters related to the IHC protocol as well as the readout vary widely between clinical laboratories and in the published literature. The ICSH Working Group having reviewed the published evidence has established guidelines that will help to harmonize performance and reporting of CD34 IHC on BM biopsies.

Background: In this large population-based cohort study, we examined the prognostic significance of various clinical, pathological, and contextual variables for their correlation with survival in elderly patients with stage III colon cancer.
Methods: Patients aged ≥ 70 years with stage III colon cancer, diagnosed in Saskatchewan during 2012-2018, were evaluated. A Cox proportional multivariate survival analysis was performed to determine factors correlated with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival.

Precious metal recovery from secondary sources has received significant attention due to the reduced availability of precious metals from conventional sources. Herein, chitosan (CHT) was modified via cross-linking with glutaraldehyde (glu) to yield CHT-glu adsorbents with improved physicochemical and adsorption properties with precious metal ions (Au(III) and Pd(II)). CHT-glu adsorbents were prepared at variable glu ratios and characterized via complementary spectral (IR, C solids NMR, XPS) and thermogravimetry methods.

Lifetime exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) among Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cadets starting the Cadet Training Program (CTP) appear lower than exposures reported by serving RCMP, but the prevalence of PPTE exposures during the CTP remains unknown. The current study assessed PPTE exposures during the CTP and examined associations with mental disorders among RCMP cadets. Participants were cadets (n = 449, 24.

The aim of this study was to investigate the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of modified-ILIB (intravascular laser irradiation of blood) in the control of systemic conditions and/or oral changes during dental care. This systematic literature review study aimed to answer the question, "Is modified-ILIB an effective adjuvant therapy in the control of systemic conditions and/or oral changes in children and adults during dental treatment?". The protocol for this systematic review was registered in the PROSPERO database under number CRD42023493800.

Background: About 25% of patients with acute ischemic stroke have lacunar infarct on follow-up imaging. In this secondary analysis from the AcT (Alteplase Compared With Tenecteplase) trial, we assessed if there is variation in safety or efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis by infarct type in patients with no visible occlusion. We also determined if this effect differed between tenecteplase and alteplase.

The incorporation of sequencing technologies in frontline and public health healthcare settings was vital in developing virus surveillance programs during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, increased data acquisition poses challenges for both rapid and accurate analyses. To overcome these hurdles, we developed the SARS-CoV-2 Illumina GeNome Assembly Line (SIGNAL) for quick bulk analyses of Illumina short-read sequencing data.

Lassa virus, the cause of deadly Lassa fever, is endemic in West Africa, where thousands of cases occur on an annual basis. Nigeria continues to report increasingly severe outbreaks of Lassa Fever each year and there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics for the prevention or treatment of Lassa Fever. Given the high burden of disease coupled with the potential for further escalation due to climate change the WHO has listed Lassa virus as a priority pathogen with the potential to cause widespread outbreaks.

The built environment provides an excellent setting for interdisciplinary research on the dynamics of microbial communities. The system is simplified compared to many natural settings, and to some extent the entire environment can be manipulated, from architectural design to materials use, air flow, human traffic, and capacity to disrupt microbial communities through cleaning. Here, we provide an overview of the ecology of the microbiome in the built environment.

Trace elements play diverse roles in animal physiology ranging from essential micronutrients to potent toxicants. Despite animals accumulating many trace elements through their diets, relationships between trophic positions and biological concentrations of most trace elements remain poorly described. We report trophic transfer rates of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, Ti, Tl, U, V, and Zn from 31 freshwaters located in distinct biogeographic regions.
