Background: The management of patients with Monkeypox (MPX) infection is generally symptomatic as there has been no approved antiviral drug so far. Despite being generally a self-limited disease, some complications may be encountered such as severe pain and the formation of permanent skin scarring.

Aim: To present a case report in which a combination of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) was used for a large facial cutaneous lesion in an MPX patient.

First reported cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pets in São Paulo, Brazil.

Background And Aim: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in humans in 2019. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection is primarily asymptomatic and transitory in companion animals, the role of these animals in the life cycle of the virus remains unclear. This study aimed to survey the first SARS-CoV-2 infection cases in pets, including a dog and three cats in São Paulo, Brazil.

Statement Of Problem: Computer-guided implant surgery facilitated by intraoral scanning may enhance the efficiency of the digital workflow. However, it is necessary to assess technique accuracy to evaluate the accuracy of implant placement.

Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the accuracy of a virtual computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) static guided surgery technique associated with intraoral scanning in partially edentulous participants by analyzing the overlap among preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, virtual planning, and the guided surgery performed.

Effects of physical distancing by COVID-19 pandemic on diet quality, neurological and immunological markers, and fecal microbiota of Brazilian older women.

Physical distancing was used to prevent transmission of COVID-19, however there are concerns that this may promote harmful impacts on health, such as reduced levels of physical practice and changes in food intake and gut microbiota composition. This study evaluated the impacts of 6 months physical distancing on Brazilian older women upon body mass index (BMI), strength, physical activity level (IPAQ), eating habits, neurological markers (brain-derived neurotrophic factor-BDNF and cortisol), cytokines (IL-2, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, interferon-IFN-γ, tumor necrosis factor-TNF-α), aging-associated markers (vascular endothelial growth factor-VEGF, insulin-like growth factor-IGF-1, klotho and thymic stromal lymphopoietin-TSLP), besides specific groups of fecal microbiota. Fifteen women, over 60 years old, residents of São Paulo state (Brazil), were evaluated in March and in September 2020.

Obesity impairs lung function and mechanics and leads to low-grade inflammation, but the effects of combined physical exercise (CPE) on that are unknown. We investigated the effects of 12 weeks of combined physical exercise (aerobic + resistance training), in non-obese ( = 12), overweight ( = 17), and obese grade I ( = 11) women. Lung function and lung mechanics were evaluated.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis simulating endodontic periapical lesion: Are we prepared to diagnose and manage it? A case report.

Many aggressive non-endodontic radiolucent lesions show very similar clinical and radiographical features to periapical lesions of endodontic origin. Since the treatments of endodontic and non-endodontic lesions differ markedly, a precise diagnosis is imperative. Thus, the present study aimed at presenting a clinical case on the diagnosis and management of a Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) lesion mimicking a periapical lesion of endodontic origin.

Introduction: Erythema multiforme (EM) is a reactive mucocutaneous disorder typically initiated by viral infections. Although the management of EM differs according to the clinical course and trigger factor, it is not clear whether antiviral suppressive therapies may be useful in cases related to such infections. Moreover, the treatment is most often based on supportive care directed towards only the symptoms.

Photobiomodulation and Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy for Oral Ulcers in a Patient With Thrombocytopenia Following Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Thrombocytopenia is usually seen after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and may favor the development of oral bleeding, infections, and ulcerations. A patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia had been submitted to allogeneic HSCT. Within a few days, she developed severe thrombocytopenia and an extensive ulcerative area comprising both lips, which bled spontaneously, as well as smaller ulcers on the tongue mucosa.

High-power laser for oral excisional biopsy in an oncologic patient with pancytopenia.

Oral surgical procedures are a great challenge in cancer patients, especially those with pancytopenia, given the risk of both hemorrhage and opportunistic infection. Thus, we report herein a case of a patient with refractory acute myeloid leukemia, severe pancytopenia, and some episodes of febrile neutropenia, who presented asymptomatic, bilateral lesions on the tongue, requiring excisional biopsy. Considering the high risk of bleeding, surgical intervention was proposed with a high-power laser (HPL) at the bedside.

Keeping Neotropical primates in captivity puts them at great risk of illness because of their susceptibility to human herpesvirus. This is the first report on herpesvirus in Callicebus nigrifrons that developed clinical disease and was confirmed by immunohistochemical and RT-PCR. Diagnosis and prevention are essential for the conservation of species.

Towards Bioinspired Meniscus-Regenerative Scaffolds: Engineering a Novel 3D Bioprinted Patient-Specific Construct Reinforced by Biomimetically Aligned Nanofibers.

Introduction: Three of the main requirements that remain major challenges in tissue engineering of the knee meniscus are to engineer scaffolds with compatible anatomical shape, good mechanical properties, and microstructure able to mimic the architecture of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this context, we presented a new biofabrication strategy to develop a three-dimensional (3D) meniscus-regenerative scaffold with custom-made macroscopic size and microarchitecture bioinspired by the organization of structural fibers of native tissue ECM.

Methods: The concept was based on the combination of bioprinted cell-laden hydrogel (type 1 collagen) reinforced by multilayers of biomimetically aligned electrospun nanofibrous mats (polycaprolactone/carbon nanotubes, PCL/CNT), using a patient-specific 3D digital meniscus model reconstructed from MRI data by free and open-source software.

Nitrogenous compounds in the saliva and blood of cirrhotic patients: a cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Serum increase of nitrogenous compounds (NC) in cirrhotic patients has been associated with the development of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). However, the relation between NC in saliva and HE is unclear. The objective of this study is to measure the levels of nitric oxide and urea in the blood and saliva in 38 cirrhotic patients and correlate them with clinical characteristics and presence and grades of HE.

Salivary Microbial Dysbiosis Is Associated With Peri-Implantitis: A Case-Control Study in a Brazilian Population.

Background And Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the salivary microbiome in healthy peri-implant sites and those with peri-implantitis.

Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 21 participants with healthy peri-implant sites and 21 participants with peri-implantitis. The V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced using the Ion Torrent PGM System (Ion 318™ Chip v2 400).

Bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to dentin using different adhesion protocols.

Background: The treatment of dentin before the use of self-adhesive cements is still a crucial point to achieve the best bond strength values. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between dentin and composite resin using different adhesion strategies with self-adhesive resin cement.

Material And Methods: Forty healthy third human molars were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 10): CA (control); application of self-adhesive cement (Rely X U200, 3M ESPE), AD + CA: only application of conventional adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE) + self-adhesive cement, AC + AD + CA; conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds + application of conventional adhesive + self-adhesive cement and AC + CA; conditioning with 37% phosphoric acid for 15s + self-adhesive cement.

Cytomorphometric Evaluation of Oral Mucosa of Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disorder in which patients progressive muscle deterioration and low life expectancy. Since DMD has no cure, treatment slows the deterioration process using corticosteroids and other medications, including oral bisphosphonates (BP). These drugs can lead to toxicities in both soft and hard tissues.

First report of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 detection in two asymptomatic cats in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil.

Background And Aim: Despite worldwide case reports, including Brazilian cases, no frequency study on infection of pets by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been conducted to date in Brazil. Accordingly, the present study was aimed to assess dogs and cats belonging to positive owners in Recife, Northeastern Brazil.

Materials And Methods: This was a longitudinal prospective study on dogs and cats in the city of Recife whose owners were in isolation at home due to a confirmed laboratory diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 through reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).

Phototherapies for COVID-19-associated opportunistic oral infections.

Opportunistic infections are widely described in patients with novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, very few studies have addressed those affecting the oral cavity. Given the lack of information on the clinical presentations and the available treatment options, the present study aimed to show a case in which a combination of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) was used for the management of two concomitant COVID-19-associated opportunistic oral infections (oral pseudomembranous candidiasis and recurrent herpes labialis). Within 7 days and without any systemic drug administration, all the lesions resolved completely, and the patient no longer reported oral pain or discomfort.

Lipedema Can Be Treated Non-Surgically: A Report of 5 Cases.

BACKGROUND Lipedema is a chronic progressive disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat in the subcutaneous region. Both medical and surgical treatments have been described in international guidelines; however, the current literature is biased toward promoting liposuction as the primary treatment of lipedema, and this can lead to the misapprehension that liposuction is the only form of definitive treatment. CASE REPORT In the present study, we report 5 cases at various stages of the evolution of lipedema, all with different therapeutic objectives.
