Lung ultrasound can be useful for the early diagnosis and treatment of respiratory complications. The combination of air and soft tissue confirms imaging artefacts that can contribute to differentiation between healthy and deteriorated lung tissue. Although non-human primates are often chosen as research models due to their anatomical and physiological similarity to humans, there is a lack of data on the use of lung ultrasound in these individuals.

Saliva has emerged as a promising diagnostic fluid for viral infections, enabling the direct analysis of viral genetic material and the detection of infection markers such as proteins, metabolites, microRNAs, and immunoglobulins. This comprehensive review aimed to explore the use of saliva as a diagnostic tool for viral infections, emphasizing its advantages and limitations. Saliva stands out due to its simplicity and safety in collection, along with the convenience of self-collection without the need for healthcare supervision, while potentially being comparable to urine and blood in terms of effectiveness.

Background/objectives: Patient safety is a critical component of healthcare quality, yet there remains a significant gap in understanding how patient safety knowledge progresses among nursing students throughout their educational journey. This scoping review aims to map and analyze the existing literature on the development of patient safety knowledge in undergraduate nursing education.

Methods: This study will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and adhere to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Scoping Reviews) guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurosurgery is a hard field to get into, especially for international medical graduates (IMGs) who need to show they have done research to stand out.
  • Even though it’s tough, some Brazilian medical students have done really well by publishing important studies in big neurosurgery journals without needing a lot of money or resources.
  • The article suggests that IMGs can start their research careers by writing literature reviews and letters to the editor, which are easier ways to get involved in research.

Inflammatory Status in Trained and Untrained Mice at Different Pollution Levels.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

June 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Escola Paulista de Medicina, Federal University of São Paulo, São Paulo 04021-001, Brazil.

Atmospheric pollution can be defined as a set of changes that occur in the composition of the air, making it unsuitable and/or harmful and thereby generating adverse effects on human health. The regular practice of physical exercise (PE) is associated with the preservation and/or improvement of health; however, it can be influenced by neuroimmunoendocrine mechanisms and external factors such as air pollution, highlighting the need for studies involving the practice of PE in polluted environments. Herein, 24 male C57BL/6 mice were evaluated, distributed into four groups (exposed to a high concentration of pollutants/sedentary, exposed to a high concentration of pollutants/exercised, exposed to ambient air/sedentary, and exposed to ambient air/exercised).

Unlabelled: a widespread parasite, has the ability to infect nearly any nucleated cell in warm-blooded vertebrates. It is estimated that around 2 billion people globally have been infected by this pathogen. Although most healthy individuals can effectively control parasite replication, certain parasites may evade the immune response, establishing cysts in the brain that are refractory to the immune system and resistant to available drugs.

Homeopathy was introduced in Brazil with the French doctor Benoît Jules Mure's arrival in 1840 and was officially recognised in 1980 as a medical specialty by Brazilian regulatory authorities. Public health policies played an important role in incorporating homeopathy into the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), emphasising homeopathy's coherence with SUS's fundamental principles and with other national health policies. Homeopathy is supported by the guidelines of the National Primary Health Care Policy and the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices, and its offer in the SUS has been recognised since 2006.

Background: Platynosomiasis in non-human primates kept under human care causes chronic disease of the bile ducts and liver, which initially presents with nonspecific signs and can culminate in the death of the animal. Diagnosing this disease is a challenge, and an ultrasound examination can be an excellent tool when it is suspected.

Methods: This study describes the ultrasound findings from 57 marmosets with suspected infection by Platynosomum sp.

Quality of life is a fundamental aspect of good health and differs from person to person, highlighting the importance of individualisation, which is one of the principles of homeopathic doctrine. Homeopathy aligns with the principles of the Brazilian public health system, reflecting the latter's ethos of universality, accessibility, care coordination, and comprehensiveness, offering a whole-person approach to health care. Homeopathy's individualised approach and expanded view of the health-disease process, with emphasis on healthy lifestyle guidance, contributes to the promotion of individual good health and quality of life.

While fluconazole use is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, there has been an increasing number of reports regarding several adverse events. Therefore, the present study aimed to present a unique case in which photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) was employed to manage bullous erythema multiforme lesions secondary to fluconazole intake. A 32-year-old female patient sought emergency dental care due to painful orofacial lesions that had developed two days after oral fluconazole use for recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Introduction: Mental distress is highly reported in cancer patients, resulting in anxiety and depression most of the time. Both conditions, in turn, are recognized to be related to dental fear in adults; however, there are no studies on patients suffering from head and neck cancer. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate whether newly diagnosed patients with head and neck cancer are more prone to self-reported dental fear.

Article Synopsis
  • Asthmatic children have higher levels of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic mediators, leading to increased airway resistance and impaired lung function compared to non-asthmatic children.
  • A study involving 78 children (39 asthmatic and 39 non-asthmatic) revealed significant differences in immune response and respiratory mechanics, with asthmatic children showing a marked increase in various blood cells and specific inflammatory factors.
  • The research suggests that using impulse oscillometry can effectively measure airway resistance in asthmatic children, highlighting its importance in assessing and managing asthma severity.

Article Synopsis
  • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) and Steven-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) are severe and potentially life-threatening skin reactions triggered by medications, making their treatment difficult.
  • This study examines two cases of children with TEN and SJS who were treated with a combination of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), in addition to regular supportive care.
  • The treatment led to notable improvement in the children's oral health within a few days, allowing them to begin eating again, suggesting that aPDT and PBMT might effectively support recovery from oral injuries caused by TEN and SJS.

Surgical procedures involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are frequently associated with nerve injuries and subsequent dysfunctions. Considering that traumatic peripheral nerve injuries may resolve slowly and their prognosis is generally unpredictable, the current study aimed to report a clinical case in which both motor (affecting the temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve) and sensory dysfunctions (affecting the auriculotemporal nerve of the trigeminal nerve) following TMJ surgery were effectively treated by using photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). PBMT sessions, involving a total of 30 facial points, were administered twice a week for 10 weeks.

Burn injuries are of serious concern worldwide not only because of the physical impact but also because of severe mental and emotional distress and reduced quality of life. The usual management comprises topical and systemic medications, and supportive care; however, conventional therapy may be expensive and insufficient for many cases. Thus, we describe herein a unique case in which a low-level laser was used concomitantly with the conventional approach for the management of head and neck burn wounds and could improve the patient's clinical condition within a short period.
