Article Synopsis
  • A study focused on patients with various Type 2 inflammation (T2i) diseases (like asthma and allergies) highlights the common challenges they face in terms of quality of life (QoL) and the limited understanding of their experiences and management needs.
  • Conducted by the T2i Network Project, an anonymous online survey collected data from 404 participants, involving their demographics, disease severity, healthcare usage, and quality of care perceptions.
  • Results showed that a significant portion of participants reported moderate-to-severe disease severity (93%), and those with multiple T2i conditions experienced a notably greater negative impact on their QoL compared to those with just one condition ( < .001).

Immediate implant placement with flap or flapless surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

J Clin Periodontol

June 2023

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Oral Health Sciences, Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.

Aim: To assess the impact of mucoperiosteal flap elevation for single immediate implant placement (IIP) on buccal hard and soft tissue changes, and on clinical, aesthetic and patient-reported outcomes.

Materials And Methods: Two independent reviewers conducted an electronic literature search in Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane databases as well as a manual search to identify eligible clinical studies up to June 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing IIP without flap elevation to IIP with flap elevation were included for a qualitative and quantitative analysis.

There is extensive evidence showing that bilinguals activate the lexical and the syntactic representations of both languages in a nonselective way. However, the extent to which the lexical and the syntactic levels of representations interact during second language (L2) sentence processing and how those interactions are modulated by L2 proficiency remain unclear. This paper aimed to directly address these issues by using an online technique (eye-tracking) that is highly sensitive to the lexical and syntactic processes involved in sentence reading.

Benzoic acid-derived nitrones: A new class of potential acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and neuroprotective agents.

Eur J Med Chem

July 2019

CIQUP/Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, Rua do Campo Alegre s/n, 4169-007, Porto, Portugal. Electronic address:

The discovery of new chemical entities endowed with potent and selective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and/or butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activity is still a relevant subject for Alzheimer's disease therapy. Therefore, a small library of benzoic based amide nitrones (compounds 24 to 42) was synthesized and screened toward cholinesterase enzymes. SAR studies showed that the tert-butyl moiety is the most favourable nitrone pattern.

Membranous CD44v6 levels in tumors and surrounding samples obtained from 94 patients with squamous cell lung carcinomas were studied and compared to clinical stage, cellular proliferation, membranous CD44v5 levels, epidermal growth factor receptor EGFR and cytoplasmatic concentrations of CYFRA 21.1. CD44v6 positive values were observed in 33/38 non-tumor samples and in 76/94 tumor samples, but there were not statistically significant differences between both subgroups.

To study the immunohistochemical expression of bcl-2 in patients with hormone-independent breast infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC) and its possible association with other clinico-biological parameters and outcome. Our study group included 72 females with hormone-independent (ER and PgR negative) infiltrating ductal breast carcinomas. Age, tumor size, axillary lymph node involvement (N), distant metastasis and histological grade, as well as the immunohistochemical expression of Ki67, p53 and androgen receptor (AR), were analyzed.

The incidence of p53 antigen and human papillomavirus (HPV) expression in archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from verrucous carcinoma of the larynx was determined using immunohistochemistry. The p53 oncoprotein was detected in four of 10 tissue samples (40 per cent). The same number of tumours had HPV antigen, and three cases had both p53 oncoprotein and HPV antigen.

Neurosyphilis in HIV-infected patients.

Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis

October 1995

Infectious Diseases Unit, Hospital Xeral of Vigo, University of Santiago Compostela, Spain.

To determine the prevalence and the clinical and serological findings of neurosyphilis in HIV-infected patients, Treponema pallidum hemagglutination (TPHA) tests, CD4+ lymphocyte counts and determination of rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titers were performed in 972 HIV-infected patients over a period of 3.5 years. Patients were scored according to the Centers for Disease Control's classification for HIV infection.
