Combined use of edible films (EF) with nanoencapsulation systems could be an effective alternative for improving the films' physical properties and maintaining bioactive compounds' stability. This research work focuses on the combined use of EF of cellulose-derived biopolymers enriched with liposomes that encapsulate grape seed tannins and on the subsequent evaluation of the physical properties and wettability. Tannin-containing liposomal suspensions (TLS) showed 570.

Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is inevitable in various X-ray imaging examinations, with computed tomography (CT) being a major contributor to increased human radiation exposure. Ionizing radiation may cause structural damage to macromolecules, particularly DNA, mostly through an indirect pathway in diagnostic imaging. The indirect pathway primarily involves the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to water radiolysis induced by IR, leading to DNA damage, including double-strand breaks (DSB), which are highly cytotoxic.

In the food industry context, where fresh cheese stands out as a highly perishable product with a short shelf life, this study aimed to extend its preservation through multi-layer edible coatings. The overall objective was to analyze the biaxial behavior and texture of fresh cheese coated with nanoliposomes encapsulating grape seed tannins (NTs) and polysaccharides (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; HPMC and kappa carrageenan; KC) using immersion and spray methods, establishing comparisons with uncoated cheeses and commercial samples, including an accelerated shelf-life study. NT, HPMC, and KC were employed as primary components in the multi-layer edible coatings, which were applied through immersion and spray.

Grape seeds are an excellent source of flavonoids and tannins with powerful antioxidant properties. However, the astringency of tannins limits their direct incorporation into food. To overcome this challenge, we investigated the encapsulation of grape seed tannins within nanoliposomes formed by ultrasound cycling.

We implemented a clustered randomized controlled trial with 6,963 residents in six rural Ghana districts to estimate the causal impact of financial incentives on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination uptake. Villages randomly received one of four video treatment arms: a placebo, a standard health message, a high cash incentive (60 Ghana cedis) and a low cash incentive (20 Ghana cedis). For the first co-primary outcome-COVID-19 vaccination intentions-non-vaccinated participants assigned to the cash incentive treatments had an average rate of 81% (1,733 of 2,168) compared to 71% (1,895 of 2,669) for those in the placebo treatment arm.

Mechanical and Surface Properties of Edible Coatings Elaborated with Nanoliposomes Encapsulating Grape Seed Tannins and Polysaccharides.

Polymers (Basel)

September 2023

Department of Food Science and Technology, Technological Faculty, University of Santiago-Chile, USACH. Av. El Belloto 3735, Estación Central, Santiago 9170022, Chile.

Edible composite coatings (ECC) formulated from biopolymers that incorporate antioxidant molecules represent an innovative alternative to improve food texture and provide health benefits. Tannins have aroused great interest due to their ability to stabilize suspensions and counteract the effects of free radicals. The mechanical and surface properties are crucial to establishing its quality and applicability.

Action sequences, habits, and attention in copying strategies.

Behav Brain Sci

November 2022

Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA.

Understanding how culture evolves in society is an extremely difficult task. The bifocal stance theory (BST) deploys two copying strategies which can be linked to dual-system theories of behavior. BST would benefit from incorporating results from these theories, such as the evolution of attention to goals or steps of a behavioral sequence, and the role of the environment in prompting different copying strategies.

Introduction: Grip strength has been associated with chronic diseases and mortality. However, current evidence of the association between grip strength and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of absolute and relative grip strength with incident T2DM and whether these associations differ by sociodemographic, lifestyle and adiposity-related factors.

We describe the structure and properties of [Zn(CHN)N] , a new nonporous three-dimensional high-energy metal-organic framework (HE-MOF) with enhanced thermal stability. The compound is synthesized by the hydrothermal method with in situ ligand formation under controlled pH and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and Fourier transform infrared. The measured detonation temperature ( = 345 °C) and heat of detonation (Δ = -0.

Background: Practicing physical activity in a natural environment has various benefits that make it an ideal setting to develop healthy behaviors and thereby diminish unhealthy habits. The objective of this study was to develop and verify an explicative model for motivational climate in sport, considering its potential influence on alcohol and tobacco consumption.

Methods: The study included 2273 adolescents from Granada (Spain), analyzing motivational climate (PMCSQ-2), alcohol consumption (AUDIT) and tobacco consumption (FTND).

Bayesian semiparametric analysis of recurrent failure time data using copulas.

Biom J

November 2015

Department of Statistics, University of Auckland, Private Bag 92109, Auckland, New Zealand.

The analysis of recurrent event data is of particular importance in medical statistics where patients suffering from chronic diseases often present with multiple recurring relapses or cancer patients experience several tumor recurrences. Whereas individual subjects can be assumed to be independent, the times between events of one subject are neither independent nor identically distributed. Apart from the marginal approach by Wei et al.

Bivariate survival modeling: a Bayesian approach based on Copulas.

Lifetime Data Anal

June 2006

Department of Mathematics, University of Santiago - Chile, Casilla 307 Correo 2, Santiago, Chile.

Copula models have become increasingly popular for modeling multivariate survival data. In this paper we review some of the recent work that has been appeared for copula model for bivariate survival data and propose a Bayesian modeling. Our approach is very flexible with respect to the choice of marginal distributions and, depending on the copula model employed, it is possible to have a class of variation for the dependence parameter.

Beclomethasone dipropionate and salbutamol by metered dose inhaler in infants and small children with recurrent wheezing.

Pediatr Pulmonol

July 2002

Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Hospital El Pino, University of Santiago Chile, Santiago, Chile.

The efficacy of beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) to control respiratory symptoms was evaluated in 31 children under age 2 years with recurrent wheezing. The study was conducted in a double-blind, parallel, and placebo-controlled fashion. The two study groups received either salbutamol plus BDP 200 microg bid by metered dose inhaler (MDI) with a spacer, or salbutamol MDI plus a placebo.

Differentiation of the intermediate mesoderm involves a complex series of events that result in the formation of the rudiment of the entire adult renal system, gonads and gonoducts. This work, using light, transmission, and scanning electron microscopy describes in human embryos of different ages, the development and spatiotemporal organization of the mesonephric nephron, and the development of the gonadal primordium, with the purpose of knowing if and how these two blastemas contribute to the origin of the non germinal cell content of the gonad primordium. Our results show that between Carnegie stage 13 and 20, the mesonephric nephrons facing the gonadal area, are separated by a band of mesenchymal tissue from the gonad primordium and they retain their structural integrities at the level of epithelial wall and their basement membrane.
