VLPs Derived from the CCMV Plant Virus Can Directly Transfect and Deliver Heterologous Genes for Translation into Mammalian Cells.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are being used for therapeutic developments such as vaccines and drug nanocarriers. Among these, plant virus capsids are gaining interest for the formation of VLPs because they can be safely handled and are noncytotoxic. A paradigm in virology, however, is that plant viruses cannot transfect and deliver directly their genetic material or other cargos into mammalian cells.

Additional evidence that the rat renal interstitium contracts in vivo.

We recently provided highly suggestive preliminary evidence that the renal interstitium contracts reactively in vivo. We demonstrated that renal medullary direct interstitial volume expansion (rmDIVE = 100 μl bolus infusion of 0.9% saline (SS)/30 s) brought about a biphasic renal interstitial hydrostatic pressure (RIHP) response which was abolished when dibutyryl-cAMP was concomitant and interstitially infused.

Risk assessment methodology for trajectory planning in keyhole neurosurgery using genetic algorithms.

Background: Preoperative assessment to find the safest trajectory in keyhole neurosurgery can reduce post operative complications.

Methods: We introduced a novel preoperative risk assessment semiautomated methodology based on the sum of N maximum risk values using a generic genetic algorithm for the safest trajectory search.

Results: A set of candidates trajectories were found for two surgical procedures.

Women exposure to household air pollution after an improved cookstove program in rural San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The state government of San Luis Potosí (SLP), Mexico implemented an improved cookstove (ICS) program in rural areas. As part of the comprehensive program evaluation, we compared fine particulate material (PM) concentrations in kitchens and patios in treated (TH), and non-treated households (NTH), and analyzed pollutant levels according to patterns of fuels and devices use reported by the women. A panel study was conducted in 728 households (357 TH and 371 NTH) in three regions of SLP including two sampling rounds in 2015-16.

The aim of the present study was to identify the relationship between the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and the responses of pulp sensitivity tests in healthy pulps and irreversible pulps by performing a cross-sectional study on patients. Two hundred subjects were evaluated. A total of 75 subjects complied with the criteria.

Reproductive health education program for Mexican women.

Improve knowledge, attitudes and reproductive behaviours through an educational intervention aimed at reproductive health in two groups of Mexican women. We carried out an education program targeting two segments, indigenous women and marginalised adolescents, with a pre-test, immediate post-test and post-test six months after it was carried out. Instruments used: a reproductive health history was established (pre-test and post-test six months) and a questionnaire of knowledge, attitude and conduct related to reproductive health and condom use (pre-test, immediate post-test and post-test six months).

Salvia tiliifolia is used in folk medicine as a relaxant agent and for the treatment of diarrhea and neurodegenerative diseases. Tilifodiolide (TFD) is a diterpene obtained from this plant. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the antidiarrheal, vasorelaxant, and neuropharmacological actions of TFD.

Diagnostic Value of Mid-Thigh and Mid-Calf Bone, Muscle, and Fat Mass in Osteosarcopenia: A Pilot Study.

miRNAs are important immune regulators in the control of the CD4 + T cells phenotype. miR-326 regulates the differentiation towards Th17 cells and the inhibition of miR-155 is associated with low levels of Treg cells. However, miRNAs expression and transcription factors associated with these lymphocyte subsets in obesity-induced adipose tissue inflammation is still unknown.

Atmospheric dispersion of methane emissions from sugarcane burning in Mexico.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas whose atmospheric dispersion may have different implications at distinct scales. One significant contributor to methane emissions is sugarcane farming in tropical areas like in Mexico, which has the sixth highest production level in the world. A consequence of the industrial use of this resource is that sugarcane preharvest burning emits large quantities of methane and other pollutants.

Procyanidins (PCs) are polyphenols highly accumulated in litchi fruit (Litchi chinensis). Despite their bioactivity, the molecular composition of native and oxidized procyanidins is little understood. Thermal Study of Polyols for the Technological Application as Plasticizers in Food Industry.

In this work is presented the complete thermal analysis of polyols by direct methods such as simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyzer (TGA-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), modulated DSC (MDSC), and supercooling MDSC. The different thermal events in the temperature range of 113⁻553 K were identified for glycerol (GL), ethylene glycol (EG), and propylene glycol (PG). Boiling temperature (T) decreased as GL > EG > PG, but increased with the heating rate.

Environmental Health Promotion of a Contaminated Site in Mexico.

Entangled in complex ecological, sociocultural, and economic systems, current environmental health problems require integrated participatory approaches. Alpuyeca, a semi-urban, highly marginalized community in South-Central Mexico burdened by lead and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination, dengue fever, and intestinal diseases, illustrates this. Its residents are distinctive, however, for their concerted actions in the face of environmental problems and the presence of defenders of a prehispanic worldview based on the protection of nature.

Postextraction Alveolar Preservation and Use of the Crown of the Extracted Tooth as a Temporary Restoration.

Ranging from the extraction of teeth from anterior sector commitment to the loss of bone and soft tissues, alveolar preservation is a regenerative technique that employs biomaterials that induce the preservation of bone tissue and minimize resorption. Placement of provisional restorations at the defect site maintains the stability of the soft tissues and aesthetics at which the definitive restoration is found. The objective of this clinical case was alveolar preservation postextraction of the anterior tooth that presented a coronal fracture, placing the clinical crown of the extracted tooth as the provisional restoration to maintain stability and to avoid soft tissue collapse and compromise to an aesthetic area.
