AIM2-inflammasome role in systemic lupus erythematous and rheumatoid arthritis.

Autoimmunity

November 2022

Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, IMSS, Unidad de Investigación Biomédica, Delegación Zacatecas, Zacatecas, México.

The inflammasome AIM2 regulates multiple aspects of innate immune functions and serves as a critical mediator of inflammatory responses. AIM2 inflammasome activation leads to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1β and IL-18 and participates triggering a pyroptosis response needed to counteract excessive cell proliferation. In addition, AIM2 expression and activation is wide regulated since alteration in its activity may derived in pathological consequences.

Noninvasive Glucose Measurements Through Transcutaneous Raman Spectroscopy: A Review.

J Diabetes Sci Technol

March 2024

Terahertz Science and Technology National Lab, Coordination for Innovation and Application of Science and Technology, San Luis Potosi, México.

Background: People living with diabetes need constant glucose monitoring to avoid health complications. However, they do not monitor their glucose levels as often as recommended, probably because glucose measurement devices can be painful, costly, need testing strips or sensors, require lancing the finger or inserting a sensor with risk of infection, and can be inaccurate or have failures. Therefore, developing new alternatives for noninvasive glucose measurements that overcome these disadvantages is necessary, being Raman spectroscopy (RS) a solution.

Aim: Ectopic eruption of the first permanent molar (EFUPM) is defined as its local disturbed eruptive behaviour, positioning too mesially against the distal aspect of the second upper primary molar during the developing mixed dentition. The EFUPM prevalence is up to 6% and affects both genders equally. The present study aimed to perform a scoping review to collect the most relevant studies published in the last 30 years and focused on the different strategies, traditional and novel, for treating irreversible uni- or bilateral EFUPM in children.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a biocoagulant produced from the devilfish invasive species and its combination with two chemical coagulants (aluminum sulfate and ferric sulfate) to remove turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids in ceramic industry wastewater using a combined experimental design of Mixture-Process. This design optimized the coagulation process and evaluated the effects and interactions between mixture components and coagulant doses. An analysis of variance was used to analyze the experimental data obtained in the study, and the response surface plots by response type (turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids) were obtained.

3D-Printed Tubular Scaffolds Decorated with Air-Jet-Spun Fibers for Bone Tissue Applications.

Bioengineering (Basel)

April 2022

Tissue Bioengineering Laboratory, DEPeI, School of Dentistry, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), Circuito Exterior s/n C.P., Mexico City 04510, Mexico.

The fabrication of instructive materials to engineer bone substitute scaffolds is still a relevant challenge. Current advances in additive manufacturing techniques make possible the fabrication of 3D scaffolds with even more controlled architecture at micro- and submicrometric levels, satisfying the relevant biological and mechanical requirements for tissue engineering. In this view, integrated use of additive manufacturing techniques is proposed, by combining 3D printing and air-jet spinning techniques, to optimize the fabrication of PLA tubes with nanostructured fibrous coatings for long bone defects.

Since their discovery, arylamine N-acetyltransferases 1 and 2 (NAT1 and NAT2, respectively) have been associated with the metabolism of xenobiotics. NAT2 is the main factor in the therapeutic success of tuberculosis treatment due to its role in the biotransformation of isoniazid. However, researchers have started to investigate the possible participation of NAT1 and NAT2 (NATs) in carcinogenesis, although the mechanisms have not been elucidated fully.

The thin-layer chromatography technique (TLC) is a simple and inexpensive analysis commonly used to identify qualitatively the presence of carbohydrates in food samples such as mono- di and oligosaccharides particularly. TLC assay could be improved using image processing software for the semiquantitative determination of this type of compound. In the present work, TLC-image analysis with Silica Gel 60 TLC plates was used for the semiquantitative determination of 6 standards of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, sucrose, 1-kestose, nystose, and fructofuranosylnystose).

Sodium Selenite Diminished the Regulatory T Cell Differentiation In Vitro.

Biol Trace Elem Res

April 2023

Unidad de Investigación Biomédica, Delegación Zacatecas, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, IMSS, Interior de la Alameda No.45, 98000, Zacatecas, Zac, México.

Sodium selenite modulates the activity of lymphocytes. It negatively regulates the suppressive activity of cells and increases the immune response. In this study, we evaluated whether the regulatory T cell differentiation was modulated by sodium selenite.

Single-use baby diapers belongs to an important group of products used in the parenting journey because of their high performance and convenience. Single-use baby diapers are normally thrown away after one-time use, resulting in a waste management problem. The goal of this paper was to better understand main environmental concerns of different types of diapers and address how to reduce them, with a special consideration of waste management strategies and user behaviour practices.

Cognitive radios represent a real alternative to the scarcity of the radio spectrum. One of the primary tasks of these radios is the detection of possible gaps in a given bandwidth used by licensed users (called also primary users). This task, called spectrum sensing, requires high precision in determining these gaps, maximizing the probability of detection.

Background: The diagnosis, classification and treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures, continue to be controversial. Surgery is generally the preferred treatment for unstable fractures while stable fractures are managed conservatively. This study aims to describe surgical procedures, outcomes, complications, demography, clinical features and differences between A3 and A4 fractures (AO classification) of the thoracolumbar region.

Nanosorbents as Materials for Extraction Processes of Environmental Contaminants and Others.

Molecules

February 2022

Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and BioTechMed Center, Gdańsk University of Technology, 11/12 G. Narutowicza St., 80-233 Gdańsk, Poland.

The aim of this work focuses on the application of nanomaterials (NMs) in different sorptive extraction techniques for the analysis of organic contaminants from environmental samples of distinct matrix compositions. Without any doubt, the integration of specific NMs such as carbonaceous nanomaterials, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), silica nanoparticles, and ion-imprinted NPs with solid-phase extraction techniques counting -SPE, solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) impact on the improvements in analytical performance. The application of NMs as sorbents in the extraction of organic pollutants in environmental samples allows for providing better sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and reusability.

Current challenges in froth flotation are the presence of complex gangues and the use of low-quality waters, such as seawater. In this scenario, the recovery of molybdenum minerals is difficult, mainly due to the hydrophobic faces' physicochemical changes. In the present study, the natural floatability of pure molybdenite was analyzed by using microflotation assays, and hydrophobicity was measured by performing contact-angle measurements.
