Antibacterial Effect of Silver Nanoparticles against Oral Biofilms in Subjects with Motor and Intellectual Disabilities.

J Funct Biomater

July 2024

Master Program in Dental Sciences, Stomatology Department, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Autonomous University of Juarez City (UACJ), Envolvente del PRONAF and Estocolmo s/n, Ciudad Juárez 32310, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Background: Motor and intellectual disabilities (MIDs) represent a great challenge for maintaining general health due to physical and cognitive limitations, particularly in the maintenance and preservation of oral health. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic tool for bacterial control, including oral biofilms; however, knowledge of the bactericidal effectiveness of oral biofilms from patients with MIDs is insufficient. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial effect of AgNPs on different oral biofilms taken from patients with and without MIDs.

Background: Intracanal medication is considered an alternative after instrumentation in the case of pulp necrosis. However, the elimination of this medication plays an important role in the obturation process, which is why various chelating solutions have currently been studied for this purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the irrigant based on alendronic acid (AA), which contains in its chemical structure functional groups capable of forming complexes with Ca2+ ions.

Diagnostic tests for Parkinsonism based on speech samples have shown promising results. Although abnormal auditory feedback integration during speech production and impaired rhythmic organization of speech are known in Parkinsonism, these aspects have not been incorporated into diagnostic tests. This study aimed to identify Parkinsonism using a novel speech behavioral test that involved rhythmically repeating syllables under different auditory feedback conditions.

is an opportunistic pathogen in HAIs with two facets: the most studied is the high rate of antimicrobial resistance, and the less explored is the long list of virulence factors it possesses. This study aimed to characterize the virulence genes carried by strains as well as the profile of cytokines related to inflammation, according to the resistance profile presented. This study aims to identify the virulence factors associated with MDR strains, particularly those resistant to carbapenems, and assess whether there is a cytokine profile that correlates with these characteristics.

Chronic noncommunicable diseases are a global health problem causing increased rates of mortality and sick leaves, which can be reduced by controlling dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. Experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the antidiabetic, lipid-lowering, antiobesogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive properties of cinnamon; therefore, its use in yogurt can help reverse the effects of these diseases. Our study aims to evaluate the effect of a microencapsulated aqueous extract of cinnamon () (MCE Cz) incorporated in a yogurt drink on metabolic syndrome (MS) in a rabbit ().

A series of amphiphilic block copolymer (BCP) micelles based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized by a one-step reaction in the presence of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) as a catalyst. The structural composition of PDMS--PEG (PR11) and PEG--PDMS--PEG (PR12) was corroborated by FTIR, Si NMR, and TGA. The BCPs were assembled in an aqueous solution, obtaining micelles between 57 and 87 nm in size.

The cytosolic enzymes N-Acetyl Transferases 1 and 2 (NATs) transfer an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to a xenobiotic substrate. NATs are regulated at the genetic and epigenetic levels by deacetylase enzymes such as sirtuins. The enzymatic expression of NAT1, NAT2, and SIRT1 was evaluated by flow cytometry, as well as the enzymatic activity of NATs by cell culture and HPLC analysis.

Discrepancies between the measurement of body mass index (BMI) and metabolic health status have been described for the onset of metabolic diseases. Studying novel biomarkers, some of which are associated with metabolic syndrome, can help us to understand the differences between metabolic health (MetH) and BMI. A group of 1469 young adults with pre-specified anthropometric and blood biochemical parameters were selected.

July 2024

Center for Applied Research in Environment and Health, CIACYT-Faculty of Medicine, Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, Avenida Sierra Leona No. 550, Lomas 2nd Section, 78210, San Luis Potosí, SLP, Mexico; Global Public Health Program, Boston College, Boston, MA, United States. Electronic address:

Background: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent neoplasia in children and teenagers in Mexico. Although epidemiological data supports that children's residence close to emissions from vehicular traffic or industrial processes increases the risk of ALL; and the IARC states that benzene, PAHs, and PM 2.5 are well-known environmental carcinogens, there is a gap in linking these carcinogenic hazards with the sources and their distribution from scenario perspective.

Human Serum Albumin in the Presence of Small Platinum Nanoparticles.

J Pharm Sci

June 2024

Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, Institut des Sciences Moléculaires d'Orsay, 91405 Orsay, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) show great promise in nanomedicine due to their high electron density and surface area, with intravenous injection being the preferred delivery method.
  • Research using synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD) explored how these nanoparticles interact with human serum albumin (HSA), a key blood component, showing no strong complexation except for some increased thermal stability at a specific nanoparticle-to-protein ratio.
  • The study suggests a quick method to assess the potential toxicity of Pt NPs for clinical use, particularly for intravenous applications.

Anxiety/pain is a combined experience that can hinder dental treatment in children and lead to the development of negative behaviours in any form of surgical treatment. Hypnosis is a suitable option with which to reduce anxiety and pain during dental treatment. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hypnosis compared to the tell/show/do technique for the reduction of anxiety and pain as measured by Face, Legs, Activity, Crying, Consolability (FLACC) scale in children undergoing pulpotomies.

  • This study explored using activated carbons (ACs) and UV light to reduce triclosan (TCS) levels in water, focusing on how pH affects adsorption capacity, with the highest capacity at pH 7 for different AC types.
  • Results indicated that ACs like Darco and Norit effectively adsorb TCS, while UV light proved to be an efficient method for photodegrading TCS, achieving over 80% removal.
  • The research concluded that both adsorption and photodegradation methods can safely reduce TCS concentrations in water to non-hazardous levels, making them practical solutions for water treatment.
