Previous work has demonstrated that gay, bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) living with HIV are likely to experience intersectional stigma. However, mainstream systems often fail to recognize how power and privilege shape this experience. Such a complex psychological phenomenon requires an in-depth reflective inquiry that acknowledges individuals as experts in their own experiences.

Modeling global net ecosystem exchange is essential to understanding and quantifying the complex interactions between the Earth's terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Emphasizing the inter-relatedness between the global net ecosystem exchange, global sea surface temperature, and atmospheric levels, intuitively suggests that all three systems may exhibit collective environmental memory. Motivated by this, we explicitly identified a collective memory function and showed a similar non-Markovian stochastic behavior for these systems exhibiting superdiffusive behavior in short time intervals.

Curcuminoids, known for their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing properties, face challenges in medical applications due to their limited water solubility, resulting in poor bioavailability and clinical efficacy. This study introduces a novel approach to formulating 3D printing ink for personalized wound dressings by utilizing hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDES) to incorporate poorly water-soluble compounds from (, curcuminoids and ar-turmerone) into hydrogels. The use of HDES, comprising either acetic acid or octanoic acid combined with menthol in a 2 : 1 molar ratio, significantly improved the solubility of curcuminoid derivatives and ar-turmerone by approximately 10 to 600 times, depending on the intrinsic chemical polarities of each compound, compared to conventional extraction solvents (, ethanol and water).

Objectives: Maternal socioeconomic status (SES) is an important predictor of adverse birth outcomes and postnatal health across global populations. Chronic inflammation is implicated in cardiometabolic disease risk in high-income contexts and is a potential pathway linking maternal adversity to offspring health trajectories. To clarify how socioeconomic inequality shapes pregnancy inflammation in middle-income settings, we investigated SES as a predictor of inflammatory cytokines in late gestation in a sample from the Cebu Longitudinal Health Nutrition Survey in Cebu, Philippines.

Ultra-processed food (UPF) intake is rising in low- and middle-income countries, where non-communicable diseases are now the leading contributor to disease burden. The purpose of this study was to assess awareness and knowledge of UPFs, factors that influence consumption of UPFs, and beliefs about the relationship between UPF intake and health among young people (18-20 years old) in a metropolitan area of the Philippines, a lower middle-income country. We conducted eight focus group discussions across four strata defined by gender and urban-rural neighborhood designation.

Background: Women's health and well-being (WHW) have been receiving growing attention, but limited progress has been made on how to measure its different domains in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We used data from five long-term birth cohorts in Brazil, Guatemala, the Philippines and South Africa to explore different domains of adult WHW, and how these domains relate to early life exposures.

Methods: Based upon an a priori conceptualisation of eight postulated WHW outcomes available in the data, we grouped them as follows: human capital (intelligence quotient, schooling, height, and teenage childbearing), metabolic health (body mass index and metabolic syndrome score), and psychological (happiness and Self-Reported Questionnaire (SRQ) scores).

  • Prophages significantly influence the characteristics of pathogenic bacteria, yet their ecological and evolutionary roles, particularly in bacteria linked to gastric cancer, are not well understood.
  • A comprehensive analysis of 1,011 complete clinical genomes revealed that 29.5% contain prophages, with only 32.2% being complete, and their distribution varies by geography and ancestry but not by the disease status of hosts.
  • The study uncovered mechanisms of prophage inactivation and proposed a new model for regulating the lysogenic-lytic cycle, providing a deeper understanding of how prophages impact bacterial genetics and adaptation.

  • The Illumina MethylationEPIC BeadChip microarray platform has two versions (v1.0 and v2.0), which show high correlation overall but varying results at the probe level for tools assessing DNA methylation effects.
  • Research using blood samples from different adult age groups found that samples clustered more by the EPIC version used than by other characteristics, indicating significant differences in data outputs between the two versions.
  • The study emphasizes the need to consider which EPIC version is used when analyzing data for meta-analyses and longitudinal studies, as these differences can impact findings in epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS).

High economic inequality is linked to greater moralization.

PNAS Nexus

July 2024

Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, 3052, Australia.

Throughout the 21st century, economic inequality is predicted to increase as we face new challenges, from changes in the technological landscape to the growing climate crisis. It is crucial we understand how these changes in inequality may affect how people think and behave. We propose that economic inequality threatens the social fabric of society, in turn increasing moralization-that is, the greater tendency to employ or emphasize morality in everyday life-as an attempt to restore order and control.

A central prediction of evolutionary theory is that energy invested into reproduction comes at the expense of somatic maintenance and repair, accelerating biological aging. Supporting this prediction are findings that high fertility among women predicts shorter lifespan and poorer health later in life. However, biological aging is thought to begin before age-related health declines, limiting the applicability of morbidity and mortality for studying the aging process earlier in life.
