Complex vocal systems are thought to evolve if individuals are regularly challenged by complex social decision-making, the social complexity hypothesis. We tested this idea on a West African forest non-human primate, the Olive colobus monkey, a highly cryptic species with very little social behavior and very small group sizes, factors unlikely to favor the evolution of complex communication. The species also has an unusual fission-fusion social system, with group members regularly spending considerable amounts of time with neighboring groups.

Human nonverbal vocalizations such as screams and cries often reflect their evolved functions. Although the universality of these putatively primordial vocal signals and their phylogenetic roots in animal calls suggest a strong reflexive foundation, many of the emotional vocalizations that we humans produce are under our voluntary control. This suggests that, like speech, volitional vocalizations may require auditory input to develop typically.

Materials And Methods: A systematic search for published observational studies within six electronic databases and grey literature was conducted, PROSPERO database number CRD42020160062. Results from studies reporting clinical periodontal parameters: probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment level, plaque index, and gingival index, in HIV- and non-HIV-infected individuals were reviewed.

Objective: To assess the value of combining brain and autonomic measures to discriminate the subjective perception of pain from other sensory-cognitive activations.
Methods: 20 healthy individuals received 2 types of tonic painful stimulation delivered to the hand: electrical stimuli and immersion in 10 Celsius degree (°C) water, which were contrasted with non-painful immersion in 15 °C water, and stressful cognitive testing. High-density electroencephalography (EEG) and autonomic measures (pupillary, electrodermal and cardiovascular) were continuously recorded, and the accuracy of pain detection based on combinations of electrophysiological features was assessed using machine learning procedures.

In oceans, the noise generated by human activities has reached phenomenal proportions, with considerable harmful effects on marine life. Measuring this impact to achieve a sustainable balance for highly vulnerable marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, is a critical environmental policy objective. Here, we demonstrate that anthropogenic noise alters the interactions of a coral reef fish with its environment and how this behavioural response to noise impairs foraging.

Baby cries can convey both static information related to individual identity and dynamic information related to the baby's emotional and physiological state. How do these dimensions interact? Are they transmitted independently, or do they compete against one another? Here we show that the universal acoustic expression of pain in distress cries overrides individual differences at the expense of identity signaling. Our acoustic analysis show that pain cries, compared with discomfort cries, are characterized by a more unstable source, thus interfering with the production of identity cues.

Acute, transient lymphocytopenia, not clinically significant was observed in the CAPRISA 012B phase 1 clinical trial following administration of broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAb)-CAP256V2LS alone or with VRC07-523LS. Lymphocytopenia was assigned upon a > 50% decline in absolute lymphocyte counts following bnAb administration. We posited that systemic immunoglobulins (Igs), and cytokine profiles of eight women who developed lymphocytopenia were different to the 12 women without lymphocytopenia.

Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are under increasing environmental pressure. Monitoring colony size and population trends of this Antarctic seabird relies primarily on satellite imagery recorded near the end of the breeding season, when light conditions levels are sufficient to capture images, but colony occupancy is highly variable. To correct population estimates for this variability, we develop a phenological model that can predict the number of breeding pairs and fledging chicks, as well as key phenological events such as arrival, hatching and foraging times, from as few as six data points from a single season.

In mammals, offspring vocalizations typically encode information about identity and body condition, allowing parents to limit alloparenting and adjust care. But how do these vocalizations mediate parental behavior in species faced with the problem of rearing not one, but multiple offspring, such as domestic dogs? Comprehensive acoustic analyses of 4,400 whines recorded from 220 Beagle puppies in 40 litters revealed litter and individual (within litter) differences in call acoustic structure. By then playing resynthesized whines to mothers, we showed that they provided more care to their litters, and were more likely to carry the emitting loudspeaker to the nest, in response to whine variants derived from their own puppies than from strangers.

In recent years, the idea has flourished that plants emit and perceive sound and could even be capable of exchanging information through the acoustic channel. While research into plant bioacoustics is still in its infancy, with potentially fascinating discoveries awaiting ahead, here we show that the current knowledge is not conclusive. While plants do emit sounds under biotic and abiotic stresses such as drought, these sounds are high-pitched, of low intensity, and propagate only to a short distance.
