There is a lack of literature examining the engagement in strength activities of people with disabilities (PWD) using and not using wearable devices. The objectives of the current study were to determine the prevalence of strength activity engagement among wearable device users with disabilities, and to compare strength activity engagement between wearable device users and non-users with and without disabilities. Wearable device users and non-users with and without disabilities from eight states of the CDC's 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance were included in the analysis.

This analysis explored relationships between mental health symptoms and conditions and cognitive function in a cohort of Vietnam-era women veterans from the Health of Vietnam Era Veteran Women's Study (HealthViEWS). Vietnam-era women veterans completed a mail survey assessing self-reported symptom severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. A telephone-based structured interview assessed mental health conditions and cognitive function (telephone interview for cognitive status [TICS]).

There are known disparities in chronic pain severity, treatment, and opioid-related risks amongst individuals from lower socioeconomic status, including Medicaid beneficiaries, but little is known about whether Medicaid beneficiaries benefit in a similar way from multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation. This study investigated differences in clinical outcomes between Medicaid and non-Medicaid beneficiaries who completed a 3-week multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program. Participants ( = 131) completed a broad range of clinical measures pre- and post-treatment including pain severity, pain interference, depression, anxiety, objective physical functioning, and opioid misuse risk.

Purpose: Motor skills are involved in many physical activities and are prerequisites for the performance of sport skills. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the effects of exercise training programs (ETP) on the motor skills of individuals with intellectual disabilities (IwID).
Methods: Primary sources were obtained from four databases including PubMed, SCOPUS, CENTRAL, and Web of Science.

Theories, models, and frameworks provide the foundation for occupational therapy education, research, and clinical practice. While most have a systems approach focus, other factors, such as societal influences and structural inequities, also contribute to health. Using a cross-sectional design, this study identified the gaps in occupational therapy models of practice and presents a novel approach, the PAIRE (Recognize rivilege, cknowledge njustice, and eframe Perspective to Reach quity) Model.

Objectives: Acknowledging the association between diet and systemic inflammation, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and the Energy-Adjusted DII (E-DII) were developed to categorize diet from anti- to pro-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the relationship between DII and E-DII against the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) to assess the use of energy-adjustment when analyzing the inflammatory potential of the diet.
Methods: This cross-sectional secondary data analysis included 5289 adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2015 and 2018.

Individuals diagnosed with cancer commonly experience a significant decline in muscle mass and physical function collectively referred to as cancer related muscle dysfunction. This is concerning because impairments in functional capacity are associated with an increased risk for the development of disability and subsequent mortality. Notably, exercise offers a potential intervention to combat cancer related muscle dysfunction.

This brief report provides an overview of lessons learned through evaluation of the first five years of the NIA-funded South Carolina-Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (SC-ADAR) undergraduate program, whose goal is to increase the number of qualified underrepresented minority (URM) students who pursue scientific graduate studies in programs focusing on medicine, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and aging. Partnering with five Historically Black Colleges and Universities in South Carolina, we implemented a research training approach that included two consecutive summers of research training in a University of South Carolina faculty laboratory, as part of a comprehensive 24-month research education program. In addition to the mentored research experience in a laboratory, students had coursework in the biology of aging and social gerontology, with additional workshops tailored to emergent student needs including basic academic skills development, work-life management skills, reflective social experiences, and enhanced support in the transition from undergraduate to graduate school.

Background: Pain and fatigue are common chronic conditions faced by older adults. Integrated interventions to address pain and fatigue may therefore be particularly useful for older adults, especially those interventions that target mobility and psychosocial well-being. The present study describes feasibility and participant satisfaction for an integrated eHealth treatment to address pain and fatigue in a sample of older adults living in a low-income independent residence facility and their own homes in the community.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is defined as a type of respiratory failure that is caused by a variety of insults such as pneumonia, sepsis, trauma and certain viral infections. In this study, we investigated the effect of an endocannabinoid, anandamide (AEA), on ARDS induced in the mouse by Enterotoxin B (SEB). Administration of a single intranasal dose of SEB in mice and treated with exogenous AEA at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight led to the amelioration of ARDS in mice.

Hiding data in electrocardiogram signals are a big challenge due to the embedded information that can hamper the accuracy of disease detection. On the other hand, hiding data into ECG signals provides more security for, and authenticity of, the patient's data. Some recent studies used non-blind watermarking techniques to embed patient information and data of a patient into ECG signals.

Recent advances in J-difference-edited proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H MRS) data acquisition and processing have led to the development of Hadamard Encoding and Reconstruction of MEGA-Edited Spectroscopy (HERMES) techniques, which enable the simultaneous measurement of ɣ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and of glutathione (GSH), the most abundant antioxidant in living tissue, at the commonly available magnetic field strength of 3 T. However, the reproducibility of brain levels of GABA and GSH measured across multiple scans in human subjects using HERMES remains to be established. In the present study, twelve healthy volunteers completed two consecutive HERMES scans of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) to assess the test-retest reproducibility of the technique for GABA and GSH measurements at TE = 80 ms.

Although the neurotransmitters/modulators glutamate and, more recently, glycine have been implicated in the development and maintenance of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in preclinical research, human proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) studies have focused solely on the measurement of glutamate. The purpose of the present analysis was to examine the relative associations of brain glutamate and glycine levels with recent heavy drinking in 41 treatment naïve individuals with AUD using H-MRS. The present study is the first that we are aware of to report in vivo brain glycine levels from an investigation of addiction.

Background: Muir-Torre syndrome (MTS) is a rare inherited syndrome, with an increased risk of sebaceous and visceral malignancy. Prior reports suggest screening for mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency may be warranted in patients <50 years and when sebaceous neoplasms are located on a non-head and neck location. Previously, appropriate use criteria (AUC) were developed for clinical scenarios in patients >60 years concerning the use of MMR protein immunohistochemistry (MMRP-IHC).
