Older adults have difficulties to detect the intentions, thoughts, and feelings of others, indicating an age-associated decline of socio-cognitive abilities that are known as "mentalizing". These deficits in mental state recognition are driven by neurofunctional alterations in brain regions that are implicated in mentalizing, such as the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and the dorso-medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). We tested whether focal transcranial current stimulation (tDCS) of the rTPJ and dmPFC has the potential to eliminate mentalizing deficits in older adults.

Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) forms small and imperfect crystals of low melting temperature at high supercooling of the melt. Slow heating allows reorganization of the obtained semicrystalline structure with the changes of the crystallinity and of the size and perfection of crystals analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-resolved X-ray scattering techniques. Crystals generated at 20 °C begin to melt and reorganize at a few K higher temperature with their initial imperfection and thickness unchanged upon heating to 70-80 °C.

Background: Body conformation, including withers height, is a major selection criterion in horse breeding and is associated with other important traits, such as health and performance. However, little is known about the genomic background of equine conformation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use imputed sequence-level genotypes from up to 4891 German Warmblood horses to identify genomic regions associated with withers height and linear conformation traits.

The 2-bit Lindqvist-type polyoxometalate (POM) [VO((OCH)CCHN)] with a diamagnetic {VO} core and azide termini shows six fully oxidized V centers in solution as well as the solid state, according to V NMR spectroscopy. Under UV irradiation, it exhibits reversible switching between its ground S state and the energetically higher lying states in acetonitrile and water solutions. TD-DFT calculations demonstrate that this process is mainly initialized by excitation from the S to S state.

Mitochondrial dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (mtLPD1) is a central enzyme in primary carbon metabolism, since its function is required to drive four multienzymes involved in photorespiration, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and the degradation of branched-chain amino acids. However, in illuminated, photosynthesizing tissue a vast amount of mtLPD1 is necessary for glycine decarboxylase (GDC), the key enzyme of photorespiration. In light of the shared role, the functional characterization of mtLPD1 is necessary to understand how the three pathways might interact under different environmental scenarios.

Background: The PENELOPE-B study demonstrated that the addition of 1-year post-neoadjuvant palbociclib to endocrine therapy (ET) in patients with high-risk early breast cancer (BC) did not improve invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) compared to placebo. Here, we report results for premenopausal women.
Patients And Methods: Patients with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative BC at high risk of relapse [defined as no pathological complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and a clinical, pathological stage, estrogen receptor, grading (CPS-EG) score ≥3 or 2/ypN+] were randomized to receive 13 cycles of palbociclib or placebo + standard ET.

Background: The differentiation of high-grade glioma and brain tumors of an extracranial origin is eminent for the decision on subsequent treatment regimens. While in high-grade glioma, a surgical resection of the tumor mass is a fundamental part of current standard regimens, in brain metastasis, the burden of the primary tumor must be considered. However, without a cancer history, the differentiation remains challenging in the imaging.

Emissions from road traffic and residential heating contribute to urban air pollution. Advances in emission reduction technologies may alter the composition of emissions and affect their fate during atmospheric processing. Here, emissions of a gasoline car and a wood stove, both equipped with modern emission mitigation technology, were photochemically aged in an oxidation flow reactor to the equivalent of one to five days of photochemical aging.

The significance of soil organic matter (SOM) in environmental contexts, particularly its role in pollutant adsorption, has prompted an increased utilization of molecular simulations to understand microscopic interactions. This study introduces a coarse-grained SOM model, parametrized within the framework of the versatile Martini 3 force field. Utilizing models generated by the Vienna Soil Organic Matter Modeler 2, which constructs humic substance systems from a fragment database, we employed Swarm-CG to parametrize the fragments and subsequently assembled them into macromolecules.

Background: Abnormalities in electrocortical parameters and persistence of afterimage after visual stimulation are known to occur in migraine patients. The results of studies on Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) and afterimage persistence in migraine patients suggest a link between these two phenomena and a connection to the pathomechanism of migraine.
Objectives: To date, no studies have investigated both afterimage duration and CNV parameters in the same subjects.

Although total hip replacements (THR) can be considered one of the most successful implantable medical devices in history, wear remains the ultimate challenge in order to further increase clinical success. Wear assessment on retrieved implants is the most reliable way to perform research into failure mechanisms. Therefor the bearing surface of the explant is measured geometrically by coordinate measuring machine (CMM).

Bio-ingestion of microplastics poses a global threat to ecosystems, yet studies within nature reserves, crucial habitats for birds, remain scarce despite the well-documented ingestion of microplastics by avian species. Located in Jiangsu Province, China, the Yancheng Wetland Rare Birds Nature Reserve is home to diverse bird species, including many rare ones. This study aimed to assess the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in common bird species within the reserve, investigate microplastic enrichment across different species, and establish links between birds' habitat types and microplastic ingestion.

Based on the assessment of new evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its guidelines for the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in December 2022. The new recommendations and the latest study data made it necessary to update the existing guideline on the treatment of at least rifampicin-resistant TB (RR-TB) for the German-speaking countries, replacing the respective chapters of the treatment guidelines published in 2022. A shortened treatment of proven RR-TB and multidrug-resistant TB for at least 6 months using the fixed and non-modifiable drug combination of bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid, and moxifloxacin (BPaLM) is now also recommended for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland under certain conditions considering the existing barriers for the implementation of the new treatment regimen.

The adsorption of phosphorus (P) onto active soil surfaces plays a pivotal role in immobilizing P, thereby influencing soil fertility and the filter function of soil to protect freshwater systems from eutrophication. Competitive anions, such as organic matter (OM), significantly affect the strength of this P-binding, eventually controlling P mobility and release, but surprisingly, these processes are insufficiently understood at the molecular level. In this study, we provide a molecular-level perspective on the influence of OM on P binding at the goethite-water interface using a combined experimental-theoretical approach.

The rewetting of formerly drained peatlands can help to counteract climate change through the reduction of CO emissions. However, this can lead to resuming CH emissions due to changes in the microbiome, favoring CH-producing archaea. How plants, hydrology and microbiomes interact as ultimate determinants of CH dynamics is still poorly understood.

The development of pharmaceutical formulations and the optimisation of drug synthesis are not possible without knowledge of thermodynamics. At the same time, the quantity and quality of the available data is not at a level that meets modern requirements. A convenient diagnostic approach is desirable to assess the quality of available experimental thermodynamic data of drugs.

Intermolecular interactions determine whether matter sticks together, gases condense into liquids, or liquids freeze into solids. The most prominent example is hydrogen bonding in water, responsible for the anomalous properties in the liquid phase and polymorphism in ice. The physical properties are also exceptional for ionic liquids (ILs), wherein a delicate balance of Coulomb interactions, hydrogen bonds, and dispersion interactions results in a broad liquid range and the vaporization of ILs as ion pairs.

Objective: The aim of our study is to better understand the genetic architecture and pathological mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD). We hypothesized that a fraction of iPD patients may harbor a combination of common variants in nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes ultimately resulting in neurodegeneration.
Methods: We used mitochondria-specific polygenic risk scores (mitoPRSs) and created pathway-specific mitoPRSs using genotype data from different iPD case-control datasets worldwide, including the Luxembourg Parkinson's Study (412 iPD patients and 576 healthy controls) and COURAGE-PD cohorts (7,270 iPD cases and 6,819 healthy controls).
