Background: Patients with sporadic neuroendocrine neoplasms may exhibit a higher risk of a second primary tumor than the general population.

Aim: This study aimed to analyze the occurrence of second primary malignancies.

Methods: A retrospective cohort of 2757 patients with sporadic lung and gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, managed at eight Italian tertiary referral Centers, was included.

Two new species of Coniopterygidae, Coniopteryx (Coniopteryx) tenuisetosa, and Coniopteryx (Coniopteryx) serrata, are described from China. Both species differ from congeners in characters of the male genitalia. Coniopteryx (Coniopteryx) alticola Sziráki, 2002, is recorded from China for the first time.

Historically, rickets and osteomalacia have been synonymous with vitamin D deficiency dating back to the 17th century. The term osteomalacia, which literally means soft bone, was traditionally applied to characteristic radiologically or histologically documented skeletal disease and not just to clinical or biochemical abnormalities. Osteomalacia results from impaired mineralization of bone that can manifest in several types, which differ from one another by the relationships of osteoid (ie, unmineralized bone matrix) thickness both with osteoid surface and mineral apposition rate.

This research resulted in the identification and submission of a novel RUNX2 gene mutation in the affected members of the studied pedigree. Mutation screening is an effective method for the early diagnosis of CCD in the affected individuals.

Controversies in Vitamin D: A Statement From the Third International Conference.

The Third International Conference on Controversies in Vitamin D was held in Gubbio, Italy, September 10-13, 2019. The conference was held as a follow-up to previous meetings held in 2017 and 2018 to address topics of controversy in vitamin D research. The specific topics were selected by the steering committee of the conference and based upon areas that remain controversial from the preceding conferences.

Prevalence and clinical correlates of dementia among COVID-19-related deaths in Italy.

Introduction: We aimed at exploring the proportion of patients dying with COVID-19 and concomitant dementia in Italy, as well as their clinical characteristics and trajectories of care.

Methods: The proportion of COVID-19-related deaths occurring in people with dementia and the clinical characteristics of deceased individuals according to their dementia status were explored by considering the medical charts of a representative sample of patients deceased in Italian hospitals (n = 2621).

Results: A total of 415 individuals with dementia were identified in the study population, accounting for 15.

Background: Mortality from acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is strictly related to early management. As female patients usually experience longer delays before diagnosis and treatment, we assessed whether women were more affected by the dramatic drop in hospital admissions for ACS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical and angiographic characteristics of consecutive patients who were admitted for ACS at 15 hospitals in Northern Italy comparing men and women data.

Postoperative vaso-occlusive disease may be a life-threatening condition in patients affected by sickle cell disease, necessitating sometimes liver transplantation. After laparoscopic cholecystectomy, liver necrosis is usually secondary to intraoperative vascular injury.
