Given the limited data on the real-life therapeutic use of feline McDonough sarcoma (FMS)-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) inhibitors in Italy, we surveyed investigators at 59 Italian hematology centers to gain insight into the proportion of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients receiving FLT3 inhibitors and we collected data on the efficacy and safety of these agents. The survey results showed that in the real-life setting the response rate of the 3/7 + midostaurin regimen in newly diagnosed FLT3-mutated AML and of gilteritinib in the relapsed/refractory AML were comparable to that reported in the registrative clinical trials. The 3/7 + midostaurin treatment resulted in a 63% of complete remission (CR) rates and gilteritinib in a 44% of CR rates.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, and is characterized by muscle weakness, paralysis and ultimately, respiratory failure. The exact causes of ALS are not understood, though it is believed to combine genetic and environmental factors. Until now, it was admitted that motor neurons (MN) in the brain and spinal cord degenerate, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.

Objectives: Paediatric Burkitt's lymphoma (pBL) is the most common childhood non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma. Despite the encouraging survival rates for most children, treating cases with relapse/resistance to current therapies remains challenging. CD38 is a transmembrane protein highly expressed in pBL.

Objectives: To understand how best to further reduce the inappropriate use of pre-surgical androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), we investigated the determinants (influences) of ADT prescribing in urologists in two European countries using an established behavioural science approach. Additionally, we sought to understand how resource limitations caused by COVID-19 influenced this practice. Identification of key determinants, of undistributed and disrupted practice, will aid development of future strategies to reduce inappropriate ADT prescribing in current and future resource-limited settings.

Belantamab mafodotin is the first-in-class antibody-drug conjugates targeting B-cell maturation antigen to have demonstrated effectiveness in triple-class refractory multiple myeloma (TCR-MM) patients. We performed a retrospective study including 78 TCR patients, with at least four prior lines of therapy (LOTs), who received belantamab mafodotin within named patient program and expanded access program in Italy between 2020 and 2022. Median age was 65 years (range 42-86 years), ECOG performance status was ≥1 in 45% of patients.

Ten-Year Outcome of Recanalization or Medical Therapy for Concomitant Chronic Total Occlusion After Myocardial Infarction.

J Am Heart Assoc

May 2024

Department of Cardiology, Heart Center, Amsterdam UMC, Location AMC Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences Amsterdam the Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • - The EXPLORE trial was a 10-year study comparing chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to no-CTO PCI in patients who had a ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
  • - The trial found that after a median follow-up of 10 years, there was no significant difference in major adverse cardiac events or overall mortality between the two groups, but the CTO PCI group experienced higher cardiovascular mortality.
  • - Although the CTO PCI group had more effective relief from dyspnea (83% vs. 65%), the findings suggest that the benefits of symptom relief should be carefully considered against the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the retinal morpho-functional characteristics of patients with neovascular wet age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with intravitreal injection (IV) of aflibercept (AFL).

Methods: The study was conducted on 35 patients previously diagnosed with type 1 nAMD who received a fixed-dosing regimen of aflibercept injections over 12 months. The goal was to assess trends in visual abilities over time by measuring visual acuity (VA), contrast sensitivity (CS), visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Background: The limited ability of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in removing globotriaosylceramide from cardiomyocytes is recognized for advanced Fabry disease cardiomyopathy (FDCM). Prehypertrophic FDCM is believed to be cured or stabilized by ERT. However, no pathologic confirmation is available.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study found that patients with COPD had significantly higher rates of all-cause death, cardiovascular death, and heart failure compared to those without COPD, with COPD linked to a more than threefold increase in risk for these outcomes.
  • * Additionally, the use of beta blockers in COPD patients with AF was associated with lower mortality rates, suggesting potential benefits for treatment strategies in this demographic.

State Key Laboratory of Radio Frequency Heterogeneous Integration, College of Electronics and Information Engineering, Shenzhen University Shenzhen 518060 China.

Chemical sensors have a wide range of applications in a variety of industries, particularly for sensing volatile organic compounds. This work demonstrates the fabrication of a chemical sensor based on graphene deposited on Cu foils using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition, following its transfer on oxidized silicon through a wet etching method. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy of the transferred graphene were performed.

Background: Culuccia is a small peninsula of about 3 km placed in north-western Sardinia (Italy) at the margin of the Maddalena Archipelago. The marine area surrounding this Peninsula is a Special Area of Conservation, included in the European Natura 2000 Ecological Network of protected areas, but until now, no information on biodiversity of this area is available. In 2021, a research project to study both terrestrial and marine biodiversity of Culuccia has started in order to fill this gap of knowledge.

Background: The area sourrounding the Mediterranean basin is recognised as a major biodiversity hotspot for bees, and Italy is amongst the European countries with the highest bee species richness. Detailed knowledge of bee distribution is crucial for understanding bee biology and designing tailored conservation strategies, but is still insufficient in southern European countries, especially in Italy.

New Information: We report recent finds of 48 bee species that yield significant novelties for the Italian bee fauna.

  • Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is a serious heart condition, and this study aimed to understand the relationship between various blood biomarkers and patient prognosis.
  • Researchers examined 2,566 patients with ATTR-CA, finding high rates of anemia, urea, hyperbilirubinemia, and elevated troponin levels, which increased with disease severity.
  • The study concluded that several biomarkers, especially anemia and elevated troponin levels, are independently linked to higher mortality rates in patients, with variations based on genetic factors and heart function.

Background: Despite longstanding epidemiologic data on the association between increased serum triglycerides and cardiovascular events, the exact level at which risk begins to rise is unclear. The Working Group on Uric Acid and Cardiovascular Risk of the Italian Society of Hypertension has conceived a protocol aimed at searching for the prognostic cutoff value of triglycerides in predicting cardiovascular events in a large regional-based Italian cohort.

Methods And Results: Among 14 189 subjects aged 18 to 95 years followed-up for 11.
