Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is common. While topical minoxidil remains the only FDA-approved therapeutic for AGA, its efficacy is limited in stimulating clinically significant hair regrowth over the longer term. Oral minoxidil, which is used off-label, is a promising alternative; however, its effectiveness and underlying mechanisms warrant further investigation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Minoxidil is the only FDA-approved topical treatment for androgenetic alopecia (hair loss), showing effectiveness in 30%-40% of users, especially 50% of men, but its success depends on its conversion by the enzyme SULT1A1.
  • - The study aimed to identify and characterize the activity of SULT1A1 in various plant extracts to potentially enhance minoxidil's effectiveness.
  • - Out of 10 botanical extracts tested, seven showed significant SULT1A1 activity, suggesting they could be used as natural supplements to improve minoxidil response in hair loss treatments.

Heatwaves are occurring more frequently and are known to affect particularly night-time temperatures. We review here literature on how night-time ambient temperature changes affect body temperature and sleep quality. We then discuss how these temperature effects impact particularly vulnerable populations such as older adults, children, pregnant women, and those with psychiatric conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • - A patient was found to have a chronic subdural/epidural hematoma along with a large arachnoid cyst in the left frontotemporal area, which were discovered while investigating trigeminal neuralgia and memory issues.
  • - The patient's sudden audioverbal memory impairment is thought to be related to disruptions in brain function due to the hematoma, affecting structures that help regulate arousal.
  • - This case suggests that even with damage to one hemisphere of the brain, audioverbal memory can be compromised without relying on the intact hemisphere, indicating a potential limit for reorganization of memory functions between hemispheres.

Cutaneous and Allergic reactions due to COVID-19 vaccinations: A review.

J Cosmet Dermatol

January 2022

Unit of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation, University of Bari, Bari, Italy.

Introduction: The pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had an unprecedented impact on the overall health and the global economy. Vaccination is currently the most dependable strategy to end the pandemic, despite the slower-than-hoped-for rollout, particularly for low-to-middle-income countries, and the uncertain duration of protection afforded by vaccination. The spike protein of the virus (immunodominant antigen of the virus) is the main target of the approved and candidate SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.
