Visual gravitational motion and the vestibular system in humans.

The visual system is poorly sensitive to arbitrary accelerations, but accurately detects the effects of gravity on a target motion. Here we review behavioral and neuroimaging data about the neural mechanisms for dealing with object motion and egomotion under gravity. The results from several experiments show that the visual estimates of a target motion under gravity depend on the combination of a prior of gravity effects with on-line visual signals on target position and velocity.

Acute rejection (AR) is responsible for up to 12% of graft loss with the highest risk generally occurring during the first six months after transplantation. AR may be broadly classified into humoral as well as cellular rejection. Cellular rejection develops when donor alloantigens, presented by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) through class I or class II HLA molecules, activate the immune response against the allograft, resulting in activation of naive T cells that differentiate into subsets including cytotoxic CD8(+) and helper CD4(+) T cells type 1 (TH1) and TH2 cells or into cytoprotective immunoregulatory T cells (Tregs).

The identification of biological modules at the systems level often follows top-down decomposition of a task goal, or bottom-up decomposition of multidimensional data arrays into basic elements or patterns representing shared features. These approaches traditionally have been applied to mature, fully developed systems. Here we review some results from two other perspectives on modularity, namely the developmental and evolutionary perspective.

Occult HBV infection (OBI) is a threat for the safety of blood-supply, and has been associated with the onset of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma and lymphomagenesis. Nevertheless, genetic markers in HBsAg (particularly in D-genotype, the most common in Europe) significantly associated with OBI in vivo are missing. Thus, the goal of this study is to define: (i) prevalence and clinical profile of OBI among blood-donors; (ii) HBsAg-mutations associated with OBI; (iii) their impact on HBsAg-detection.

Viral nanoparticles are molecular cages derived from the assembly of viral structural proteins. They bear several peculiar features as proper dimensions for nanoscale applications, size homogeneity, an intrinsic robustness, a large surface area to mass ratio and a defined, repetitive and symmetric macromolecular organization. A number of expression strategies, using various biological systems, efficiently enable the production of significant quantities of viral nanoparticles, which can be easily purified.

Aims: Use of an electronic nose (zNose(TM)) to discriminate between volatile organic molecules delivered during bacterial/fungal growth on agar and in broth media.

Recent studies in vitro and in animals have suggested that ribavirin may potentiate the antihepatitis C virus (HCV) activity of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) by up-modulating the production of T cell-derived cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-2 and IFN-gamma, which play a key role in the cellular immune response against HCV. To study the immune-modulatory mechanisms of ribavirin further, cytokine production by activated T cells and circulating cytokine levels were studied by FACS analysis and ELISA testing in 25 patients with chronic hepatitis C unresponsive to IFN-alpha, before and after treatment with either ribavirin plus IFN-alpha or IFN-alpha alone. After 16 weeks of treatment, both the expression of IFN-gamma by activated T cells and the blood levels of IFN-gamma, were significantly reduced with respect to pretreatment values in patients treated with ribavirin and IFN-alpha but not in those undergoing treatment with IFN-alpha alone.

Insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins play a central role in maintaining basic cellular functions such as growth and metabolism. They act as an interface between multiple growth factor receptors possessing tyrosine kinase activity, such as the insulin receptor, and a complex network of intracellular signalling molecules containing Src homology 2 (SH2) domains. Four members (IRS-1, IRS-2, IRS-3, IRS-4) of this family have been identified which differ in their subcellular distribution and interaction with SH2 domain proteins.

The execution of a simple pointing task invokes a chain of processing that includes visual acquisition of the target, coordination of multimodal proprioceptive signals, and ultimately the generation of a motor command that will drive the finger to the desired target location. These processes in the sensorimotor chain can be described in terms of internal representations of the target or limb positions and coordinate transformations between different internal reference frames. In this article we first describe how different types of error analysis can be used to identify properties of the internal representations and coordinate transformations within the central nervous system.

Several mouse models for Huntington's disease (HD) have been produced to date. Based on differences in strain, promoter, construct, and number of glutamines, these models have provided a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms, ranging from simple increases in aggressiveness with no signs of neuropathology, to tremors and seizures in absence of degeneration, to neurological symptoms in the presence of gliosis and TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling) positivity, and finally to selective striatal damage associated with electrophysiological and behavioral abnormalities. We decided to analyze the morphology of striatum and hippocampus from a mouse transgenic line obtained by microinjection of exon 1 from the HD gene after introduction of a very high number of CAG repeat units.

Overexpression of 'tissue' transglutaminase (tTG) in the human neuroblastoma cells increases spontaneous apoptosis and renders these cells highly susceptible to death induced by various stimuli. We used immunoprecipitation to identify cellular proteins that interact specifically with tTG in SK-N-BE(2) -derived stable transfectants. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed that tTG binding proteins have molecular masses of 110, 50, 22, 14, and 12 kDa.
