In the last three decades, ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has become an evidence-based safe and efficacious treatment for managing the most common cardiac arrhythmia. In 2007, the first joint expert consensus document was issued, guiding healthcare professionals involved in catheter or surgical AF ablation. Mounting research evidence and technological advances have resulted in a rapidly changing landscape in the field of catheter and surgical AF ablation, thus stressing the need for regularly updated versions of this partnership which were issued in 2012 and 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • The study proposes a general psychopathology factor (p-factor) that reflects shared psychological issues across different disorders, particularly in adolescents during a vulnerable developmental stage.
  • The research analyzed a large group of adolescents to identify characteristics of the p-factor, focusing on aspects like emotional challenges and behavioral problems, and its relationship with emerging personality issues.
  • Findings indicate that difficulties in self-perception and interpersonal relationships correlate with higher general psychopathology, suggesting that positive peer connections may serve as a protective factor against mental health issues.

Introduction: Stroke represents the second leading cause of death worldwide after cardiovascular disease and the first cause of disability in adults. Only 25% of stroke survivors fully recover, 75% survive with some form of disability, and half of them lose self-sufficiency, negatively impacting their quality of life. This study aims to understand the experiences of stroke survivors and caregivers of training needs and support during the transitional care phase from hospital to home; it also investigates the experience of health care professionals (HCPs) of providing support and training to the dyad during this phase.

Bone health in people living with HIV (PLWH) has emerged as a significant concern in the era of effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). While ART has transformed HIV infection into a chronic condition, it has also unmasked long-term health complications, including an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures. This review aims to elucidate the multifactorial mechanisms contributing to bone health deterioration in PLWH, such as direct viral effects, immune activation, and ART-induced bone metabolism changes.

Purpose: Septal perforation refers to a defect within the nasal septum, which subsequently creates communication between the two nasal cavities. More than one surgical approach has been described to repair nasal septal perforations; however, they have a high rate of complication. We aim to introduce a new technique of endoscopic repair of septal perforations, which supports the flap and is thus used to prevent commonly encountered complications.

A primary challenge impeding optimal health outcomes in patients with disabilities is the lack of rehabilitation adherence. Immersive virtual reality emerges as a promising intervention with the potential to significantly enhance this key health outcome. This paper presents a situation-specific theory that outlines the mechanisms through which immersive virtual reality can promote rehabilitation adherence.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study addresses the environmental and health risks of organophosphorus pesticides by developing a novel biosensing platform using nanocellulose papers and a specific enzyme for real-time monitoring.
  • - The smart sensor, called nano-PAD, is designed to detect and quantify harmful substances like paraoxon, correlating enzyme activity with pollutant concentration, using advanced printing techniques.
  • - Integrated with a smartphone app and a miniaturized reader, this cost-effective biosensing method is aimed at improving environmental monitoring in settings where traditional tools are not available, ensuring timely and accurate data collection.

Symptom perception in adults with chronic physical disease: A systematic review of insular impairments.

Heart Lung

December 2024

Center for Home Care Policy & Research at VNS Health, Philadelphia, PA, USA; School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, 418 Curie Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA. Electronic address:

Background: To perform self-care, individuals with a chronic illness must be able to perceive bodily changes (ie., interoception) so they can respond to symptoms when they arise. Interoception is regulated by the insular cortex of the brain.

Background: Diverting ileostomy is a common procedure in rectal cancer surgery, but it is sometimes associated with a nonnegligible rate of complications. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and types of stoma-related complications for ileostomy creation after rectal cancer resection. The secondary aims were to report the indications, the technical details, and the efficacy of stoma care provided by ostomy nurses.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a respiratory virus that usually causes mild upper respiratory tract symptoms. However, it can lead to a severe lower respiratory tract disease in high-risk populations, with severe complications such as pneumonia and respiratory failure. RSV poses a significant public health threat not only to children, but also to adults, particularly those over 75 years of age and individuals with comorbidities.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an emerging severe tick-borne illness. The expanding habitat of ticks, coupled with migratory birds harbouring CCHF-infected ticks, contributes to an increasing number of potential hosts. The seroprevalence of anti-CCHF virus antibodies in livestock is approximately one-quarter, with a noticeable upward trend in recent years.

Purpose: We investigated sex-related brain metabolic differences in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and healthy controls (HC).

Methods: We collected two equal-sized groups of male (m-ALS) and female ALS (f-ALS) patients (n = 130 each), who underwent 2-[F]FDG-PET at diagnosis, matched for site of onset, cognitive status and King's stage. We included 168 age-matched healthy controls, half female (f-HC) and half male (m-HC).

The revival of psilocybin in psychopharmacological research heralds a potential paradigm shift for treating mood and anxiety disorders, and other psychiatric conditions beyond the psychotic spectrum. This critical review evaluates current evidence on psilocybin's efficacy, juxtaposing potential benefits with the practical aspects of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) and the methodological constraints of existing research. An electronic literature search was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, selecting studies published up to December 2023 that explored the clinical use of psilocybin in mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorder.

Article Synopsis
  • There are two main modes of retrieving episodic autobiographical memories (EAMs): direct and generative, which differ based on the specificity of the memory cues used to elicit them.
  • A literature review and advanced analysis of 32 neuroimaging studies reveal overlapping brain activations for both retrieval modes, particularly in regions linked to self-referential processes, suggesting a neural basis for accessing personal memories.
  • The study highlights distinct differences in brain activation patterns between direct and generative retrieval, with the ventromedial prefrontal cortex associated with the more constructive nature of generative memory retrieval.

Introduction: The NOTCH3 gene encodes for an evolutionarily conserved protein, whose functions encompass both embryonic cell proliferation and adult tissue-specific differentiation. Among others, a pivotal role in maintaining functional integrity of neurovascular unit (NVU) is supported by the association of several NOTCH3 gene mutations with neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). Indeed, a pathogenic role of NOTCH3 is recognised in cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL).
