The Po Plain (Northern Italy) is one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. In such a territory, where ecosystem degradation reached critical levels and the agricultural matrix is prevailingly intensive, small fragments of hilly oak-hornbeam forests still persist. Diluted pyroclastic density currents are capable to cause huge devastation and mortality around volcanoes, and temperature is a crucial parameter in assessing their lethal power. Reflectance analysis on carbonized wood from ancient Herculaneum allowed a new reconstruction of the thermal events that affected buildings and humans during the 79CE Vesuvius eruption. Here we show that the first PDC entered the town was a short-lived, ash cloud surge, with temperatures of 555-495 °C, capable of causing instant death of people, while leaving only a few decimeters of ash on ground, which we interpret as detached from high concentration currents.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis article discusses how an aspect of urban environments - sound and noise - is experienced by people walking in the city; it particularly focuses on atypical populations such as people diagnosed with psychosis, who are reported to be particularly sensitive to noisy environments. Through an analysis of video-recordings of naturalistic activities in an urban context and of video-elicitations based on these recordings, the study details the way participants orient to sound and noise in naturalistic settings, and how sound and noise are reported and reexperienced during interviews. By bringing together urban context, psychosis and social interaction, this study shows that, thanks to video recordings and conversation analysis, it is possible to analyse in detail the multimodal organization of action (talk, gesture, gaze, walking bodies) and of the sensory experience(s) of aural factors, as well as the way this organization is affected by the ecology of the situation.

The rich and complex phase diagram typical of anisotropic biological or synthetic nanoparticles, has brought a great deal of interest over the equilibrium phase behaviour of non-spherical colloids. Amongst the class of anisotropic nanoparticles, hard spherocylindrical colloids have been, over the years, extensively studied because of their optical properties, for their rich phase diagrams, and their important industrial applications, as model particles for biological systems (viruses), or for example as potential drug carriers having the ability of surviving the attacks of the immune systems. As real anisotropic nanoparticles are often polydisperse in size and/or in shape, unveiling the effect of such a perturbation over their equilibrium phase diagram is of paramount importance.
