Importance: Older patients with cancer and their caregivers worry about the effects of cancer treatment on aging-related domains (eg, function and cognition). Quality conversations with oncologists about aging-related concerns could improve patient-centered outcomes. A geriatric assessment (GA) can capture evidence-based aging-related conditions associated with poor clinical outcomes (eg, toxic effects) for older patients with cancer.

The objective was to evaluate the long-term impact that the University of Rochester Employee Wellness program has made in reducing cardiovascular disease risk. The authors conducted a 5-year retrospective study to measure change in health outcomes for more than 16,000 employees who participated in the program for more than 1 year between January 2013 and December 2017. A logistic regression model was applied to estimate the impact of participation on improvement in cardiovascular disease risk.

Introduction: Technology-based interventions that can function within real-world practice and improve outcomes increasing provider burden are needed, yet few successfully cross the research-to-practice divide. This paper describes the process of developing a clinically integrated smartphone-telemedicine program for adults with asthma and results from proof-of-concept testing.

Methods: We used a contextually grounded intervention development approach and May's implementation theory to design the intervention, with emphasis on systems capabilities and stakeholder needs.

Arizona State University, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre to Advance the Policy on Research for Health, 500 N. 3rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

Background: Health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) is reduced with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) but little is known about the impact of sleep disorders, dialysis modality and demographic factors on HR-QOL of Mexican patients with ESRD.

Methods: 121 adults with ESRD were enrolled from 4 dialysis units in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, stratified by unit and dialysis modality (hemodialysis [HD], continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis [CAPD] and automated peritoneal dialysis [APD]). Analysis included clinical information and data from the Sleep Heart Health Study Sleep Habits Questionnaire, the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) short form (SF-36) HR-QOL measure and Epworth Sleepiness Scale.

Asthma is one of the most common heritable diseases globally, with variable clinical expression and response to treatment that is attributed to underlying genetic differences. Hundreds of loci on multiple chromosomes are associated with asthma. Although routine genetic screening is not recommended, testing for medication responsiveness might soon play a role in clinical management.

Arch Psychiatr Nurs

August 2019

Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing, Baltimore, MD, United States of America. Electronic address:

Introduction: Evidence-based information related to the neurobiological bases of alcohol use disorders has not been widely disseminated to individuals affected by alcohol use. The feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of the video, Alcohol and the Brain was assessed, guided by the three constructs of the transtheoretical model: processes of change, decisional balance, and self-efficacy.

Methods: This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a brief video intervention and change in alcohol-related knowledge in a sample of urban firefighters (n = 11).

Disordered Eating, Eating Disorders, and Body Image in Midlife and Older Women.

Curr Psychiatry Rep

July 2019

Western NY Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders, University of Rochester School of Nursing, Box SON 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY, 13642, USA.

Purpose Of Review: We review the evidence for the reported increase in disordered eating and body image disturbance occurring in women in middle age and later life. We describe the contributing factors that relate to the unique experience of eating disorders (EDs) at midlife and beyond. We review evidence for several key factors in this observation, specifically the bio-psycho-social and relational components of later life EDs.

Introduction: Single-tablet combination emtricitabine/tenofovir is highly effective as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Scale-up efforts have targeted men who have sex with men (MSM), but patterns of racial disparities in PrEP use have begun to emerge. African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities in Canada and USA are also disproportionately affected by HIV, and there is lack of guidance regarding PrEP implementation in this priority population.

Early identification and intervention are critical to prevent physical and mental health complications, chronicity, and premature death associated with eating disorders. However, primary medical and behavioral health care clinicians often do not feel confident or competent to diagnose and manage patients with eating disorders. This pilot study describes an innovative telementoring project ( that builds a geographically defined collaborative learning community to bridge the knowledge gap between eating disorder specialists located in eating disorder service sites and community-based practitioners, often living in remote areas.

Stigma in health facilities: why it matters and how we can change it.

BMC Med

February 2019

Centre for Longitudinal & Life Course Studies, University of Antwerp, Sint-Jacobstraat 2, B-2000, Antwerp, Belgium.

Stigma in health facilities undermines diagnosis, treatment, and successful health outcomes. Addressing stigma is fundamental to delivering quality healthcare and achieving optimal health. This correspondence article seeks to assess how developments over the past 5 years have contributed to the state of programmatic knowledge-both approaches and methods-regarding interventions to reduce stigma in health facilities, and explores the potential to concurrently address multiple health condition stigmas.

Context:: Completion of advance directives (ADs) enhances the likelihood of receiving goal-concordant treatments near the end of life. Previous research on community samples have shown that completion of ADs is less common in lower socioeconomic status demographic group; there is a paucity of such research in patients with cancer.

Objectives:: To study the effect of income and education on the completion of ADs.

Mind mapping is a visual-spatial method of representing information using nodes (information segments) to show ideas and connecting lines to define relationships between content. As a critical thinking tool, it is applicable to a range of research activities, including information management, project development, and data analysis. The purposes of this manuscript are to describe the use of mapping for qualitative data analysis, provide step-by-step instructions of how to construct mind maps, and present examples specific to qualitative data analysis.

Background: Moral distress (MD) is an emotional and psychological response to morally challenging dilemmas. Moral distress is experienced frequently by nurses in the intensive care unit (ICU) and can result in emotional anguish, work dissatisfaction, poor patient outcomes, and high levels of nurse turnover. Opportunities to discuss ethically challenging situations may lessen MD and its associated sequela.

HIV-related symptoms have a deleterious effect on quality of life. One determinant of HIV symptom burden among individuals of color may be discrimination. The aim of this study was to explore whether multiple lifetime discrimination events are associated with a greater number of HIV-related symptoms among heterosexual HIV-positive men of color and to examine the influence of anxiety and social support on this relationship.

Background: Accurate symptom assessment remains challenging in teen populations. Little is known of usual symptom/response patterns, and self-reported paper diaries have traditionally low compliance rates. Therefore, we used concurrent digital voice diaries to capture daily asthma experiences.

Objective: Evidence-based guidance of clinical decision-making for the management of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is lacking, particularly for co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. This review evaluates treatment evidence for six common symptom targets in children/adolescents with ASD and provides a resource to facilitate application of the evidence to clinical practice.

Method: A systematic search identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and high-quality systematic reviews published between 2007 and 2016, focused on: social interaction/communication impairment, stereotypic/repetitive behaviours, irritability/agitation, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms, mood or anxiety symptoms, and sleep difficulties.

Purpose: Adolescents with asthma often report poor medication adherence and asthma control. Cognitive factors embedded in the social cognitive theory including self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and barrier perceptions may explain poor asthma outcomes in this population. This study was performed to examine the extent to which these cognitive factors are intercorrelated and explain medication adherence and asthma control in urban adolescents.
