December 2024

Institute of Biophysics Carlos Chagas Filho, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Background: The apolipoprotein ε4 (ApoE4) allele is a major risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) and was shown to promote amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation and mediate pathophysiological processes in AD. Although the molecular interaction between Aβ and ApoE is acknowledged, the precise nature of this interaction remains unclear. This study aims to explore the biophysical and biochemical nature of the interaction between Aβ and ApoE in the ε3 and ε4 isoforms.

Cardiac involvement in 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) survivors has been reported frequently. An exacerbated immune response may be the main mechanism of myocardial injury and late cardiac sequelae in this population. We investigated the immune profile in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients with COVID-19 who developed late cardiac fibrosis and edema, as detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Objective: To evaluate the influence of pre-existing maternal diabetes mellitus on fetal myocardial performance index and systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio.

Methods: Prospective cohort study included 179 pregnant women between 20 and 36w6d, divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (120, normal), Group 2 (31, type 1 diabetes mellitus), and Group 3 (28, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Systolic-to-diastolic duration ratio was calculated as the sum of isovolumic contraction time and ejection time divided by the sum of isovolumic relaxation time and ventricular filling time.

December 2024

Center for Food Analysis (NAL), Technological Development Support Laboratory (LADETEC), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Cidade Universitária, Rio de Janeiro, RJ 21941-598, Brazil; Nanotechnology Network, Carlos Chagas Filho Research Support Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), Rio de Janeiro, RJ 20020-000, Brazil. Electronic address:

This study investigated pumpkin seed protein (PSP) as a carrier for astaxanthin (AST). Interaction mechanisms revealed through fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular docking, showed that hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces form the PSP-AST complex. AST binding altered PSP's secondary structure, increasing α-helix (7.

The disaccharide trehalose plays a crucial role in multiple facets of the stress biology of yeasts and fungi. Here, we evaluate the properties, cellular and ecophysiological roles, metabolism, and stress-protection mechanisms of trehalose. We integrate disparate sources of knowledge across these topics, and bring new information about the mechanisms by which trehalose stabilises biomacromolecules and how trehalose metabolism is regulated thus giving rise to its diverse roles in fungi including stress protector, carbohydrate reserve, and regulatory/signaling molecule.

Certified reference materials (CRMs) contribute to the traceability of measurement results to recognized anchor points, ideally to the International System of Units (SI), and consequently, to their comparability and reliability. In the area of veterinary drugs' residues in foods of animal origin, the important role of CRMs must be highlighted, given the problems caused by trade restrictions in some countries. The results of studies concerning the certification of an incurred matrix certified reference material (IMCRM) for the mass fraction of nitrofuran metabolites in chicken muscles are presented in this work.

Background: Surgical clipping and endovascular coiling are well-established treatments for acutely ruptured intracranial aneurysms leading to acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). However, these modalities have limitations, particularly in cases involving wide-necked, bifurcating, or dissecting aneurysms. Flow diverter (FD) devices, initially used for unruptured aneurysms, have emerged as an alternative treatment for ruptured aneurysms despite concerns about hemorrhagic complications.

Eur J Public Health

November 2024

COPPE-Graduate School and Research in Engineering, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A Digital Twin (DT) can be understood as a representation of a real asset, a virtual replica of a physical object, process, or even a system. They have been used in managing healthcare facilities, streamlining care processes, personalizing treatments, and enhancing patient recovery. The potential impact of this tool on our society and its well-being is quite significant.

Omics approaches were extensively applied during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to understand the disease, identify biomarkers with diagnostic and prognostic value, and discover new molecular targets for medications. COVID-19 continues to challenge the healthcare system as the virus mutates, becoming more transmissible or adept at evading the immune system, causing resurgent epidemic waves over the last few years. In this study, we used saliva from volunteers who were negative and positive for COVID-19 when Omicron and its variants became dominant.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of an intradialytic aerobic exercise training program on the expression of transcription factors nuclear factor κappa B (NF-κB) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), related to inflammatory and antioxidant pathways, respectively, in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis.

Methods: This was a longitudinal, randomized clinical trial with a washout period and crossover performed with 33 patients randomized into two groups: Exercise (individualized intradialytic aerobic exercise on an adapted stationary exercise bike) three times per week for three months and control (without exercise). After the washout period (1 month), the exercise group became the control, and the other group performed the exercises for another three months.

March 2025

BIOINOVAR - Biotechnology Laboratories: Biocatalysis, Bioproducts and Bioenergy, Institute of Microbiology Paulo de Góes, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, 21941-902, Brazil. Electronic address:

Metabolomics using mass spectrometry-only (MS) analysis either by continuous or intermittent direct infusion (DIMS) and ambient ionization techniques (AMS) has grown in popularity due to their rapid, high-throughput nature and the advantage of performing fast analysis with minimal or no sample pretreatments. But currently, end-users without programming knowledge do not find applications with Graphical User Interface (GUI) specialized in processing DIMS or AMS data. Specifically, there is a lack of standardized workflow for processing data from limited sample sizes and scans from different total ion chronograms (TIC).
