Recruitment of Community College Students Into a Web-Assisted Tobacco Intervention Study.

Background: United States college students, particularly those attending community colleges, have higher smoking rates than the national average. Recruitment of such smokers into research studies has not been studied in depth, despite a moderate amount information on study recruitment success with smokers from traditional four-year colleges. Recruitment channels and success are evolving as technology evolves, so it is important to understand how to best target, implement, and evaluate recruitment strategies.

Determination of partition coefficients using H NMR spectroscopy and time domain complete reduction to amplitude-frequency table (CRAFT) analysis.

We have developed a simple, direct and novel method for the determination of partition coefficients and partitioning behavior using H NMR spectroscopy combined with time domain complete reduction to amplitude-frequency tables (CRAFT). After partitioning into water and 1-octanol using standard methods, aliquots from each layer are directly analyzed using either proton or selective excitation NMR experiments. Signal amplitudes for each compound from each layer are then extracted directly from the time domain data in an automated fashion and analyzed using the CRAFT software.

A Systematic Examination of Food Intake and Adaptation to the Food Environment by Refugees Settled in the United States.

The United States is the largest refugee resettlement country in the world. Refugees may face health-related challenges after resettlement in the United States, including higher rates of chronic diseases due to problems such as language barriers and difficulty adapting to new food environments. However, reported refugee diet challenges varied, and no systematic examination has been reported.

Associations between cancer and Alzheimer's disease in a U.S. Medicare population.

Several studies have reported bidirectional inverse associations between cancer and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study evaluates these relationships in a Medicare population. Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) linked to Medicare data, 1992-2005, we evaluated cancer risks following AD in a case-control study of 836,947 cancer cases and 142,869 controls as well as AD risk after cancer in 742,809 cancer patients and a non-cancer group of 420,518.

Novel Object Exploration as a Potential Assay for Higher Order Repetitive Behaviors in Mice.

Restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and disrupt the lives of affected individuals. RRBs are commonly split into lower-order and higher-order components, with lower order RRBs consisting of motor stereotypies and higher order RRBs consisting of perseverative and sequencing behaviors. Higher order RRBs are challenging to model in mice.

Laryngeal Elevation Velocity and Aspiration in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients.

Objectives: Aspiration after stroke has been associated with aspiration pneumonia, which contributes to increased mortality of stroke. Laryngeal elevation is a core mechanism for protection from aspiration. Few studies have explored the predictive value of laryngeal elevation velocity for aspiration after stroke.

Applying a Participatory Design Approach to Define Objectives and Properties of a "Data Profiling" Tool for Electronic Health Data.

We applied a participatory design approach to define the objectives, characteristics, and features of a "data profiling" tool for primary care Electronic Health Data (EHD). Through three participatory design workshops, we collected input from potential tool users who had experience working with EHD. We present 15 recommended features and characteristics for the data profiling tool.

Clinical inter-rater reliability of postural control techniques.

Effectiveness of postural control techniques to compensate for oropharyngeal dysphagia have been recommended and used by several clinicians. However, the inter-rater reliability of these techniques is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to clarify the ambiguity of postural control techniques using statistical analyses.

Associations between cancer and Parkinson's disease in U.S. elderly adults.

Background: Several studies suggest that cancer is reduced before and after a Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis. However, determining relationships among diseases of ageing is challenging due to possible biases in ascertaining disease. This study evaluates the PD and cancer relationship, addressing potential biases.

Influence of current input-output and age of first exposure on phonological acquisition in early bilingual Spanish-English-speaking kindergarteners.

Background: Although some investigations of phonological development have found that segmental accuracy is comparable in monolingual children and their bilingual peers, there is evidence that language use affects segmental accuracy in both languages.

Aims: To investigate the influence of age of first exposure to English and the amount of current input-output on phonological accuracy in English and Spanish in early bilingual Spanish-English kindergarteners. Also whether parent and teacher ratings of the children's intelligibility are correlated with phonological accuracy and the amount of experience with each language.

Using accountability mechanisms more intentionally: A framework and its implications for training professional psychologists.

Accountability plays an essential though underexplored role in ensuring quality psychology training. This article considers the accountability of not only training programs but also the people who are involved as faculty, supervisors, and trainees. It discusses the essential processes and purposes of accountability and then suggests a framework that might guide more intentional use of accountability mechanisms.

Responses to patronizing communication and factors that attenuate those responses.

The purpose of this study was to investigate younger (n = 52, ages 18-24) and older (n = 69, ages 61-98) adults' responses to patronizing communication in terms of (a) performance on a cognitive task (Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale-III block design) and (b) physiological responses (i.e., change in cortisol levels), as well as factors that may attenuate those responses.

Slow speech rate effects on stuttering preschoolers with disordered phonology.

To study the effects of clinicians' slow rate on the speech of children who stutter with and without a concomitant phonological disorder, an A-B-A-B single case design was used with six clinician-child dyads, where B = Clinician's slow speech rate model. Two boys and one girl, aged 49-54 months, stuttering with disordered phonology (S + DP), were compared to three boys aged 42-50 months, stuttering with normal phonology (S + NP). Articulation rates were measured in phones per second (pps) in clinician-child adjacent utterance pairs.

Participatory group prenatal education using photonovels: Evaluation of a lay health educator model with low-income Latinas.

Objective: The objective of this research was to examine the effectiveness of a participatory prenatal education program for low-income Latinas. Lay health educators facilitated groups using photonovels and experiential learning activities.

Methods: We used a community-based participatory research approach with a mixed method evaluation.

Novel object exploration in the C58/J mouse model of autistic-like behavior.

Mouse models of autistic like behaviors are a valuable tool to use when studying the causes, symptoms, and potential treatments for autism. The inbred C58/J strain is a strain of interest for this model and has previously been shown to possess face validity for some of the core traits of autism, including low social behavior and elevated motor stereotypies. Higher order repetitive behaviors have not been extensively studied in this strain, or in mice in general.

Phonological complexity in school-aged children who stutter and exhibit a language disorder.

Purpose: The Index of Phonological Complexity and the Word Complexity Measure are two measures of the phonological complexity of a word. Other phonological measures such as phonological neighborhood density have been used to compare stuttered versus fluent words. It appears that in preschoolers who stutter, the length and complexity of the utterance is more influential than the phonetic features of the stuttered word.

Task-specific modulation of adult humans' tool preferences: number of choices and size of the problem.

In two experiments, we examined the effect of modifications to the features of a stick-and-tube problem on the stick lengths that adult humans used to solve the problem. In Experiment 1, we examined whether people's tool preferences for retrieving an out-of-reach object in a tube might more closely resemble those reported with laboratory crows if people could modify a single stick to an ideal length to solve the problem. Contrary to when adult humans have selected a tool from a set of ten sticks, asking people to modify a single stick to retrieve an object did not generally result in a stick whose length was related to the object's distance.

Gender and the construction of intimacy among committed couples with children.

This study began with curiosity regarding how long-term couples with children manage their relationships in view of changing societal demands and ideals. Couples interviewed for this study described the intersection of time and intimacy as a core issue. Thus, this analysis focused on how couples construct intimacy in shared time.

Ten changes psychotherapists typically make as they mature into the role of supervisor.

Stage models have largely informed scholarship on supervisor developmental processes. We argue that understanding this development as occurring along dimensions is more useful for both supervision practitioners and educators as well as for those engaged in research on supervisor development. Building on the work of Heid () and working with a panel of 7 supervision experts, we identify 10 themes and validate their salience to supervisor development using a sample of 22 clinical supervisors.

In an up-linkage replication, three experiments examined adult humans' folk physics, i.e., their naturally occurring and spontaneous understanding of the physical world, using a violation of expectation (VOE) task and stimuli similar to those used to study chimpanzees', monkeys', and rooks' folk physics.
