The title ferrocene derivative, [Fe(CH)(CNO)], including an alkyne bonded to a -nitro-phenyl substituent, which was synthesized from a copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction between ethynylferrocene and 4-bromo-1-nitro-benzene, crystallizes in the 2/ space group. In the ferrocene unit, the penta-dienyl (Cps) rings are in an eclipsed conformation. The angle of rotation between the substituted cyclo-penta-dienyl ring and the -nitro-phenyl group is 6.

Rationale: The functional role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1) within the Nucleus Accumbens shell (NAc shell) remains unknown. Preclinical studies in rodents have reported that the ECS modulates emotional responses such as anxiety. The NAc shell has a high density of synaptically co-localized cannabinoid receptor type-1 (CB1R) and TRPV1, suggesting a potential involvement in the modulation of anxiety.

The title compound, CHFINS, a penta-fluoro-sulfanyl (SF) containing arene, was synthesized from 4-(penta-fluoro-sulfan-yl)benzo-nitrile and lithium tetra-methyl-piperidide following a variation to the standard approach, which features simple and mild conditions that allow direct access to tri-substituted SF inter-mediates that have not been demonstrated using previous methods. The mol-ecule displays a planar geometry with the benzene ring in the same plane as its three substituents. It lies on a mirror plane perpendicular to [010] with the iodo, cyano, and the sulfur and axial fluorine atoms of the penta-fluoro-sulfanyl substituent in the plane of the mol-ecule.

Despite some previous examples of successful application to the field of pharmacogenomics, the utility of machine learning (ML) techniques for warfarin dose predictions in Caribbean Hispanic patients has yet to be fully evaluated. This study compares seven ML methods to predict warfarin dosing in Caribbean Hispanics. This is a secondary analysis of genetic and non-genetic clinical data from 190 cardiovascular Hispanic patients.

The mesenterial tissues play important roles in the interactions between the viscera and the rest of the organism. Among these roles, they serve as the physical substrate for nerves connecting the visceral nervous components to the central nervous system. Although the mesenterial nervous system component has been described in vertebrates, particularly in mammals, a description in other deuterostomes is lacking.

Metal nanoparticles have significant interaction cross-sections with electromagnetic waves due to their large surface area-to-volume ratio, which can be exploited in cancer radiotherapy to locally enhance the radiation dose deposition in tumors. We developed a new type of silver nanoparticle composite, PEGylated graphene quantum dot (GQD)-decorated Silver Nanoprisms (pGAgNPs), that show excellent in vitro intracellular uptake and radiosensitization in radiation-sensitive HCT116 and relatively radiation-resistant HT29 colorectal cancer cells. Furthermore, following biodistribution analysis of intravenously injected nanoparticles in nude mice bearing HCT116 tumors radiosensitization was evaluated.

Mitochondria have been widely accepted as the main source of ATP in the cell. The inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) is important for the maintenance of ATP production and other functions of mitochondria. The electron transport chain (ETC) generates an electrochemical gradient of protons known as the proton-motive force across the IMM and thus produces the mitochondrial membrane potential that is critical to ATP synthesis.

Zika virus (ZIKV) and dengue virus (DENV) are co-endemic in many parts of the world, but the impact of ZIKV infection on subsequent DENV infection is not well understood. Here we show in rhesus macaques that the time elapsed after ZIKV infection affects the immune response to DENV infection. We show that previous ZIKV exposure increases the magnitude of the antibody and T cell responses against DENV.

Premise: Gesneria pauciflora is a rare, threatened plant in riparian forests. Periodic disturbances, expected in this habitat, could influence demographic dynamics on plant populations, yet their impact may not be the same across the watershed. We hypothesized that differences in disturbances between the main channel and tributaries may lead to spatial dissimilarities in population growth rate (λ), structure, and fecundity.

In the Context of Polymorphism: Accurate Measurement, and Validation of Solubility Data.

Cryst Growth Des

June 2019

Crystallization Design Institute, Molecular Sciences Research Center, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico 00926, United States.

Solubility measurements for polymorphic compounds are often accompanied by solvent-mediated phase transformations. In this study, solubility measurements from undersaturated solutions are employed to investigate the solubility of the two most stable polymorphs of flufenamic acid (FFA forms I and III), tolfenamic acid (TA forms I and II), and the only known form of niflumic acid (NA). The solubility was measured from 278.

Objective: Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) constitute a leading source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Seatbelt use has been associated with reduced mortality in MVCs. In Puerto Rico, the impact of seatbelt use on MVC deaths has not been evaluated, although they represent a major public health threat.

Semiconductors with magnetic response at room temperature are sought for spintronics in solid-state devices. Among possible materials for this applications, the magnetic response of FeSi and doped FeSi have produced contradictory results at the nanoscale and more precise measurements and deeper studies are needed to clarify its potential capabilities. For that reason, in this work, single nanowire measurements of ferromagnetic semiconducting FeSi and Mn-doped FeSi nanostructures have been performed using magnetic force microscopy and electron holography.

Chronic cocaine exposure produces enduring neuroadaptations in the brain's reward system. Persistence of early cocaine-evoked neuroadaptations in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is necessary for later synaptic alterations in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), suggesting a temporal sequence of neuroplastic changes between these two areas. However, the molecular nature of the signal that mediates this sequential event is unknown.

Lack of variability in dietary intake within a population makes identification of relationships between diet and disease difficult. Studies in populations with greater interindividual variation can provide important insights. The Puerto Rican diet is in transition from a traditional to a more Western-type diet, resulting in greater interindividual variability.

Holothurians as a Model System to Study Regeneration.

Results Probl Cell Differ

July 2019

Department of Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY, USA.

Echinoderms possess an incredible regenerative capacity. Within this phylum, holothurians, better known as sea cucumbers, can regenerate most of their internal and external organs. While regeneration has been studied in several species, the most recent and extensive studies have been done in the species Holothuria glaberrima, the focus of most of our discussion.

The overpopulation of stray cats in urban areas represents a potential risk for humans, as stray cats may carry diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, and virus such as rabies, the feline immunodeficiency, and the feline leukemia. In Old San Juan, a historic neighborhood and one of the most touristic places in Puerto Rico, there is an overpopulation of stray cats. In this study, we generated baseline information fundamental to developing a successful control program by estimating the stray cat population size, density, and spatial distribution.

Highly crystalline indium tin oxide (ITO) nanowires were grown via a vapor-liquid-solid method, with thermal tolerance up to ∼1300 °C. We report the electric and thermoelectric properties of the ITO nanowires before and after heat treatments and draw conclusions about their applicability as thermoelectric building blocks in nanodevices that can operate in high temperature conditions. The Seebeck coefficient and the thermal and electrical conductivities were measured in each individual nanowire by means of specialized micro-bridge thermometry devices.
