Liquid marbles (LMs) are microliter-scale droplets coated with hydrophobic solid particles. The particle size and hydrophobicity of the surface coating determine their properties, such as transparency, expandability, and resistance to evaporation and coalescence, one or more of which can be critical to their application as microreactors. This study reports the use of a mixture of two different hydrophobic powders for fabrication of LMs for colorimetric assays: trichloro(1,1,2,2-perfluorooctyl) silane-linked silica gel (modified silica gel (MSG), particle size: 40-75 μm) and hexamethyldisilazane-linked fumed silica (modified fumed silica (MFS), average aggregate length: 200-300 nm).

Background: Encapsulation of siRNA fragments inside liposome vesicles has emerged as an effective method for delivering siRNAs in vitro and in vivo. However, the liposome's fluid-phospholipid bilayer of liposomes allows siRNA fragments to diffuse out of the liposome, decreasing the dose concentration and therefore the effectiveness of the carrier. We have previously reported that β-cyclodextrins formulated in liposomes help increase the stability of siRNAs in cell culture medium.

Homoleptic complexes [Fe(4bt)](ClO) (1), [Fe(2bt)](ClO) (2), and [Fe(3tpH)](ClO) (3) were obtained by a reaction between the Fe(II) precursor salt and the corresponding thiazole-based bidentate ligand (L = 4bt = 4,4'-bithiazole, 2bt = 2,2'-bithiazole, 3tpH = 3-(thiazol-2-yl)pyrazole). X-ray crystal structure determination revealed crystallization of solvent-free complex 1, a solvate 2·MeOH, and a co-crystal 3·2(3tpH). The crystal packing of all these complexes is dominated by one-dimensional interactions between the [Fe(L)] cations.

One of the hallmarks of cancer is the expansion and accumulation of highly immunosuppressive myeloid cells known as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). To study MDSCs biology, differentiation from hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) is an useful tool to elucidate the biological and biochemical mechanisms associated with acquisition of immune suppressive activity and expansion in cancer. In the present work we theoretically analyze thermoelectric transport in single-molecule junctions (SMJ) characterized by strong interactions between electrons on the molecular linkers and phonons in their nuclear environments where electron hopping between the electrodes and the molecular bridge states predominates in the steady state electron transport. The analysis is based on the modified Marcus theory accounting for the lifetime broadening of the bridge's energy levels. We show that the reorganization processes in the environment accompanying electron transport may significantly affect SMJ thermoelectric properties both within and beyond linear transport regime.

In this study, morphology and in vitro response of electroconductive composite nanofibers were explored for biomedical use. The composite nanofibers were prepared by blending the piezoelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) and electroconductive materials with different physical and chemical properties such as copper oxide (CuO), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), and methylene blue (MB) resulting in unique combinations of electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, and other desirable properties. Morphological investigation via SEM analysis has remarked some differences in fiber size as a function of the electroconductive phase used, with a reduction of fiber diameters for the composite fibers of 12.

Our finding also shows a causal relationship confirmed by propensity score matching analyses. Results underscore the high impact but sometimes underestimated contribution of undergraduate research to academic success, even for teaching-oriented colleges.
