The link between CD4 T and B cells during immune responses to DENV and ZIKV and their roles in cross-protection during heterologous infection is an active area of research. Here we used CD4 lymphocyte depletions to dissect the impact of cellular immunity on humoral responses during a tertiary flavivirus infection in macaques. We show that CD4 depletion in DENV/ZIKV-primed animals followed by DENV resulted in dysregulated adaptive immune responses.

The current study's specific aim is to assess the psychometric properties (factor structure and reliability) of the translated and culturally adapted SASSS instrument in a cross-sectional study of individuals ( = 412) with SUDs with or without HIV from correctional facilities and community treatment programs. A confirmatory factor analysis evidenced the four-factor structure of SASSS.

Background: Anemia is a modifiable risk factor for postoperative complications following surgery. This study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative anemia severity on 30-day postoperative complications following adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery.
Methods: Adults undergoing spinal fusion for ASD from 2012 to 2018 were identified in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database.

The identity and biological activity of most metabolites still remain unknown. A bottleneck in the exploration of metabolite structures and pharmaceutical activities is the compound purification needed for bioactivity assignments and downstream structure elucidation. To enable bioactivity-focused compound identification from complex mixtures, we develop a scalable native metabolomics approach that integrates non-targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and detection of protein binding via native mass spectrometry.

Background: Pain management after foot and ankle surgery must surmount unique challenges that are not present in orthopaedic surgery performed on other parts of the body. However, disparate and inconsistent evidence makes it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from individual studies.
Questions/purposes: In this systematic review, we asked: what are (1) the patterns of opioid use or prescription (quantity, duration, incidence of persistent use), (2) factors associated with increased or decreased risk of persistent opioid use, and (3) the clinical outcomes (principally pain relief and adverse events) associated with opioid use in patients undergoing foot or ankle fracture surgery?
Methods: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for our review.

The PROTECT research Center funded by the NIH's National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program was launched in 2010 to explore the impact of exposure to pollutants on the high rate of premature births in Puerto Rico. In September 2017, Hurricanes Irma and María devastated the archipelago, which caused: collapse of the electrical system, collapse of the communication system, limited access to clean water, food, gas, and health services, destruction of public (e.g.

Introduction: Sexual minority men face mental health, substance use, and HIV disparities, all of which can be understood by minority stress and intersectionality theories. With the emergence of COVID-19 and considering its disproportionate impact on Latinx and sexual minority communities, Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) may be facing unique consequences of this new pandemic that intersect with pre-COVID disparities. The purpose of the current study is to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on LSMM's intersectional minority stress, general stress, and coping, filling a gap in the current literature.

Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) commonly affects older individuals and is associated with a relatively high rate of recurrence after surgery. Many studies have created grading systems to identify patients at high risk of CSDH recurrence after the initial surgery. However, no system has been adopted widely.

Introduction: Out-of-pocket (OOP) costs for medical and surgical care can result in substantial financial burden for patients and families. Relatively little is known regarding OOP costs for commercially insured patients receiving orthopaedic surgery. The aim of this study is to analyze the trends in OOP costs for common, elective orthopaedic surgeries performed in the hospital inpatient setting.

Study Design: A cost-utility analysis study.
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the cost-utility of neoadjuvant teriparatide therapy in osteopenic patients undergoing adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery.
Summary Of Background Data: There is increasing evidence supporting preoperative use of anabolic agents such as teriparatide for preoperative optimization of ASD patients with poor bone density.

Introduction And Importance: A spinal arachnoid web is a rare pathology that has been associated with the development of syringomyelia. Syrinx expansion can occur, which can result in the development of new symptoms. In the current literature, the farthest rostral expansion of the associated syrinx has been to the C3 spinal level.

Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is a rare but life-threatening disease in which a rapidly growing vascular tumor induces localized intravascular coagulation, causing thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and consumption coagulopathy. It presents mainly in infants and young children. We present an adult with recurrent and severe lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to Kasabach-Merritt syndrome, treated successfully with sirolimus after multiple other failed interventions.

The brain is made up of billions of neurons, which control all actions performed by us. In epilepsy, the pattern order of brain signals is altered, causing epileptiform discharges in an individual's brain. Approximately 1% of the world population has epilepsy and, therefore, there is a need for studies that can help in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 is a novel betacoronavirus with a new genome sequence that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which primarily affects the lungs, thus causing pneumonia which can progress to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. New emerging cases of extrapulmonary manifestations of COVID-19 include gastrointestinal, cardiac, renal, and/or central nervous system involvement. Although an ischemic stroke converting to a hemorrhagic stroke is more commonly seen, spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in hospitalized COVID-19 patients is on the rise.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a condition presenting with tumors of the abdominal cavity presenting which could lead abdominal distention and ascites secondary to mucus production. Tumors of this type are potentially fatal due to their obstructing of abdominal structures. The current management of the condition includes surgical debulking with intraoperative or postoperative chemotherapy with protocols such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC), respectively.

Restoring function to damaged peripheral nerves with a gap remains challenging, with <50% of patients who undergo nerve repair surgery recovering function. Further, despite enormous efforts to improve existing techniques and develop new ones, the percentage of patients who recover function and their extent of recovery has not increased in almost 70 years. Thus, although sensory nerve grafts remain the clinical "gold standard" technique for attempting to restore function to nerves with a gap, they have significant limitations.

Background: Tumor molecular profiling techniques, such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) to identify somatic genetic alterations, allow physicians to have a better understanding of the affected carcinogenic pathways and guide targeted therapy. The objective of our study was to characterize common somatic alterations and carcinogenic pathways among Puerto Rican Hispanics with solid tumors.
Methods: We conducted a single-institution, retrospective study to characterize molecular tumor profiles using a 592-gene NGS platform.

Tracheotomy is a procedure in which an incision is made on the anterior aspect of the neck to access the trachea, where a stoma is created to serve as either independent airway or as a site of insertion for a cannula. Surgeons must be proficient in this technique. The purpose of this paper is to reproduce, with slight modifications, the Parkland 12-minute checklist tracheotomy.

BACKGROUND Osteogenesis imperfecta is a skeletal disease with a range of phenotypes, depending on the genetic mutation. Individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta type I often have mutations in COL1A genes. This disease can be associated with chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum, but the number of patients with this presentation is limited, and genetic variants associated with this phenotype have not been reported.
