The capacity of particulate matter (PM) to enhance and stimulate the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators has been previously demonstrated in non-antigen-presenting cells (human bronchial epithelia). Nonetheless, many proposed mechanisms for this are extrapolated from known canonical molecular pathways. This work evaluates a possible mechanism for inflammatory exacerbation after exposure to PM (from Puerto Rico) and CuSO, using human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) as a model.

Mechanosensory neurons located across the body surface respond to tactile stimuli and elicit diverse behavioral responses, from relatively simple stimulus location-aimed movements to complex movement sequences. How mechanosensory neurons and their postsynaptic circuits influence such diverse behaviors remains unclear. We previously discovered that perform a body location-prioritized grooming sequence when mechanosensory neurons at different locations on the head and body are simultaneously stimulated by dust (Hampel et al.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) affect 15-55% of HIV-positive patients and effective therapies are unavailable. HIV-infected monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) invade the brain of these individuals, promoting neurotoxicity. We demonstrated an increased expression of cathepsin B (CATB), a lysosomal protease, in monocytes and post-mortem brain tissues of women with HAND.

We report on the first case of congenital Zika syndrome to be identified during the COVID-19 pandemic in Puerto Rico. The Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was first seen in Puerto Rico in December 2015. It is a flavivirus with vertical transmission, spreading from infected mothers to their fetuses and having a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, of which microcephaly is the most worrisome.

Objective: To report the operative outcomes after treating vertebral osteomyelitis patients with an anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion procedure using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) as graft material.
Methods: A retrospective review of electronic medical records of 26 adult patients who underwent an anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion procedure for cervical osteomyelitis using rhBMP-2 at the University of Puerto Rico University District Hospital was performed. Indication, preoperative laboratory results, levels of corpectomy, preoperative American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (ASIA) score, complications, fusion evaluation at 12 months, and ASIA score at 12 months were reviewed.

Research has identified the large conductance voltage- and calcium-activated potassium channel (BK) as a key regulator of neuronal excitability genetically associated to behavioral alcohol tolerance. Sensitivity to ethanol at the molecular level is characterized by acute potentiation of channel activity. BK isoforms show variations in alcohol sensitivity and are differentially distributed on the plasma membrane surface in response to prolonged exposure.

Neuronal signals mediated by the biogenic amine serotonin (5-HT) underlie critical survival strategies across the animal kingdom. This investigation examined serotonin-like immunoreactive neurons in the cerebral ganglion of the panpulmonate snail , a major intermediate host for the trematode parasite . Five neurons comprising the cerebral serotonergic F (CeSF) cluster of shared morphological characteristics with neurons that contribute to withdrawal behaviors in numerous heterobranch species.

Metastatic penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) has only a 50% response rate to first-line combination chemotherapies and there are currently no targeted-therapy approaches. Therefore, we have an urgent need in advanced-PSCC treatment to find novel therapies. Approximately half of all PSCC cases are positive for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV).

This study introduces a multidisciplinary approach to investigate bioactive food metabolites often overlooked due to their low concentrations. We integrated an in-house food metabolite library (n = 494), a human metabolite library (n = 891) from epidemiological studies, and metabolite pharmacological databases to screen for food metabolites with potential bioactivity. We identified six potential metabolites, including meglutol (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutarate), an understudied low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-lowering compound.

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs) harbor unique genetic mutations which may play a role in prognostication and management. To this end, we present the largest cohort of IMSCTs with genetic characterization in the literature from our multi-site institutional registry. A total of 93 IMSCT patient records were reviewed from the years 1999 to 2020.

Cervical ectopic pregnancies (CEPs) are rare and life-threatening diagnoses. Risk factors have been associated with CEPs, yet their etiology and pathogenesis remain unknown. Timely intervention is vital for successful outcomes, yet it is challenged as there is no standardized approach to treatment.

Migraine is a ubiquitous neurologic disorder that afflicts more than 1 billion people worldwide. Recommended therapeutic strategies include the use of acute and, if needed, preventive medications. During the past 2 decades, tremendous progress has been made in better understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying migraine pathogenesis, which in turn has resulted in the advent of novel medications targeting signaling molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide or its receptor.

Background: Identifying factors related to persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is essential to reduce the incidence of HPV-related cancers.
Objective: To evaluate whether gingival/periodontal inflammation is associated with oral HPV infection.
Methods: This cross-sectional study ( = 740) uses data from the follow-up visit of the San Juan Overweight Adults Longitudinal Study, which recruited overweight/obese adults aged 40-65 from Puerto Rico.

Background: Sleep difficulties are common in pregnancy, yet poor prenatal sleep may be related to negative long-term outcomes for the offspring, including risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Existing studies are few and have not examined timing of exposure effects or offspring sex moderation. We thus aimed to test the hypotheses that poor sleep health in pregnancy is associated with increased risk for ADHD symptoms and offspring sleep problems at approximately 4 years of age.

Background: After percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), clopidogrel resistant patients are at an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs). We aimed to assess whether genotype-guided selection of oral antiplatelet drugs using a clinical decision support (CDS) algorithm reduces the occurrence of these ischemic events and improves outcomes among Caribbean Hispanic patients from Puerto Rico, who are underrepresented in clinical pharmacogenomic (PGx)-guided implementation studies.
Methods: Individual platelet function testing (PRU) measures, *2 and rs662 genotypes, clinical and demographic data from 8 medical facilities were included.

Enterocutaneous fistulas can present with significant morbidity and mortality for affected patients, as the abnormal connection can result in exorbitant loss of enteral fluids, electrolyte disturbances, and sepsis, among other complications. We present a patient with a chronic complex enterocutaneous fistula who underwent several surgeries, resulting in a considerable amount of bowel resection. Based on history and findings of high output fistula with diverting transverse colostomy, the fistula was closed with a left rectus myocutaneous pedicle flap to avoid entering the abdominal cavity and prevent the possibility of short bowel syndrome.
