A novel method for the concurrent introduction of fluorine and bromine into the surface of nanoporous activated carbon (NAC) is evaluated. According to the method, the preheated NAC was treated with 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane at elevated temperatures (400-800 °C). Potentiometric and elemental analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and F solid-state NMR were used to study the NAC microstructure and changes in surface chemistry.

Caspian J Intern Med

January 2023

Department of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, PavolJozefŠafárik University in Košice, Tr. SNP 1, 040 66 Košice, Slovak Republic.

Background: Post-operative residual curarization is a persisting problem, characterized by muscle fatigue, exhaustion or paresis, caused by the use of neuromuscular blocking agents with prolonged postoperative effect. Genetically, determined changes in cholinesterase activity can be a major reason for persistent muscle blockade after administration of muscle relaxants.

Methods: Regarding the subsistence of polymorphisms in the plasma cholinesterase gene causing change in enzyme activity and metabolism of applied drugs, we investigated the frequency of two polymorphisms known to reduce its activity significantly in patients undergoing surgery.

Impact of land use on soil function and bacterial community in the Brazilian savanna.

An Acad Bras Cienc

September 2021

Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Instituto de Ciências Agrárias, Campus Glória, Bloco CCG, 38410-337 Uberlândia, MG, Brazil.

Land use systems have a great impact on soil function and microbial diversity in tropical soils. Our study aimed to evaluate soil biochemical indicators and community composition and to assess the relationship between soil biochemical and microbial indicators and bacterial diversity of three agroecosystems (pine forest, soya and sugarcane) and native Cerrado forest in the Brazilian savanna. Soil biochemical indicators (soil organic matter and enzymes) and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA were performed in two topsoil depths (0-5 cm and 5-10 cm).

Cent Eur J Public Health

December 2020

Department of Biology, Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences, University of Presov in Presov, Presov, Slovak Republic.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical effect of untreated dental caries in Roma children from eastern Slovakia using dmft/DMFT index and SiC index, association between dental caries development and oral hygiene, dietary habits and preventive dental care.

Methods: Dental caries were assessed by recording the dmft index (for primary dentition) and the DMFT index (for permanent dentition) that are used to assess the state of teeth, which expresses the current state of teeth or its development in an individual or the entire population. The SiC index was calculated as the mean dmft of one-third of the population with highest caries scores.
