Dengue virus importation risks in Africa: a modelling study.

Lancet Planet Health

December 2024

Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa. Electronic address:

Background: Dengue is a significant global public health concern that poses a threat in Africa. Particularly, African countries are at risk of viral introductions through air travel connectivity with areas of South America and Asia in which explosive dengue outbreaks frequently occur. Limited reporting and diagnostic capacity hinder a comprehensive assessment of continent-wide transmission dynamics and deployment of surveillance strategies in Africa.

Ontology of doctor and patient relationship and bioethics: from Aristotle's teleology to Pellegrino's philosophy of medicine.

Med Health Care Philos

November 2024

Bioethics Centre, Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, Alameda Prof. Hernâni Monteiro, Porto, 4200-319, Portugal.

Some philosophical and metaethical theories have tried to provide a fundamental background for bioethics but miss the fundamental question about what medicine is, its nature and its end. We argue that the philosophy of medicine, through the development that Edmund Pellegrino and David Thomasma gave to this field of study, allied with Aristotle's practical and teleological ethics, can provide an ontological background for bioethics beyond the tradition of principles and deontology, with particular emphasis on the uniqueness of the doctor-patient encounter. Some difficulties and criticisms of this ontological model are also examined.

What is the true significance of biological kinship? During the last decades, it seemed to be uncontroversial that abandoned and even adopted people feel the negative impact of biological parents' absence throughout life in several ways (Miller et al. 2000; Keyes, Margaret A., Anu Sharma, Irene J Elkins, and William G.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how inoculating Tilia tomentosa seedlings with Ectomycorrhizal fungi, specifically Lactarius deliciosus and Paxillus involutus, impacts their growth, especially in urban settings where such fungi may be scarce.
  • - Paxillus involutus was found to be particularly beneficial, significantly improving growth metrics like plant height, mycorrhization rates, and phosphorus uptake in both acidic and alkaline substrates, while Lactarius deliciosus showed limited benefits only in alkaline conditions.
  • - The research concludes that inoculating seedlings with the right fungi enhances their resilience against stressors, such as water scarcity, and stresses the importance of considering soil pH for effective transplanting in urban environments.

Preserved working memory performance along with subcortical modulation during peri-ictal phases in spontaneous migraine attacks.

Headache

October 2024

ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS, Department of Bioengineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal.

Objective: To analyze cognitive performance and brain activation during a working memory task in patients with migraine during various phases of the migraine cycle and compare to healthy participants.

Background: Cognitive difficulties reported during migraine attacks remain poorly understood, despite evidence that the lateral frontoparietal network undergoes reversible disturbances and decreased activation during attacks. Recent findings in resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging suggest that brain areas involved in this network interact with subcortical regions during spontaneous migraine attacks.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of cardiac rehabilitation programs on the health-related quality of life of patients after a coronary cardiac event using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for up to 6 months of evaluation. : A comprehensive search was carried out in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and Web of Science databases for randomized controlled trials comparing the cardiac rehabilitation program with usual care. Two independent reviewers assessed the studies for inclusion, risk of bias using the Cochrane tool, and quality of evidence through the GRADE system.

Objective: To determine the correlation between dentoskeletal parameters related to craniofacial morphology and the upper airway (UA) volume.

Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography images of 106 randomly selected orthodontic patients were analyzed using NemoFab Ortho software. The dentoskeletal variables assessed were anterior facial height (AFH), posterior facial height (PFH), PFH/AFH ratio, hyoid position, maxillary width (MW), and palatal depth.

Background: The prevalence of complex chronic conditions (CCC), which cause serious limitations and require specialized care, is increasing. The diagnosis of a CCC is a health-illness transition for children and their parents, representing a long-term change leading to greater vulnerability. Knowing the characteristics of these transitional processes is important for promoting safe transitions in this population.

Patient-reported outcome measures in knee injuries rehabilitation: A protocol for intervention.

MethodsX

June 2024

NOVA National School of Public Health, Public Health Research Centre, Comprehensive Health Research Center, CHRC, NOVA University Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal.

Different musculoskeletal conditions affect people all over the world and were considered by the WHO to be the main cause of disability in 4 of 6 regions in 2017, with an increase in the associated burden and the impact they have on today's society. One of these conditions is related to the knee, which is associated with complex and vulnerable injuries associated with ligaments, menisci, and cartilage. After surgery, there is a reflex inhibition of motor neurons and immobilization, there is rapid atrophy and weakness in the different associated muscles, affecting proprioception, strength and muscle function, compromising quality of life.

Assessing a person's capacity to engage in self-care behaviours is another added value in identifying one's potential to care for oneself in the health domain that contributes to planning person-centred care. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Exercise of Self-Care Agency (ESCA) Scale by Kearney and Fleischer, revised by Riesch and Hauck for the Portuguese version, using a sample of 625 elderly people living at home in Portugal. A cross-cultural adaptation process follows the stages of translation, synthesis, back-translation, and consensual solution for the translation process and pretesting.

Evaluation of mismatch repair (MMR) protein and microsatellite instability (MSI) status plays a pivotal role in the management of gastric cancer (GC) patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the accuracy of gastric endoscopic biopsies (EBs) in predicting MMR/MSI status and to uncover histopathologic features associated with MSI. A multicentric series of 140 GCs was collected retrospectively, in which EB and matched surgical specimens (SSs) were available.

Cadmium effects on net N2O production by the deep-sea isolate Shewanella loihica PV-4.

FEMS Microbiol Lett

January 2023

Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), University of Porto, Matosinhos 4450-208, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Deep-sea mining can release metals into the seabed, potentially disrupting microbial ecosystems crucial for functions like greenhouse gas regulation.
  • A study focused on the deep-sea bacteria Shewanella loihica PV-4 found that exposure to cadmium (Cd) significantly reduced its production of N2O, a potent greenhouse gas.
  • The inhibition of N2O production was linked to decreased expression of key genes involved in nitrogen cycling, suggesting that other deep-sea bacteria might also be affected, warranting further research into diverse communities and varying conditions.

Introduction: Microsatellite instability (MSI) is an important prognostic molecular biomarker for gastric cancer (GC). MSI status may be detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for mismatch repair (MMR) proteins and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Idylla™ MSI assay has not been validated for GC but may prove to be a valid alternative.
