A pioneering longterm experiment on mesophotic macrofouling communities in the North Atlantic.

Commun Biol

December 2024

MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, ARNET - Aquatic Research Network, Agência Regional para o Desenvolvimento da Investigação Tecnologia e Inovação (ARDITI), Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.

The mesophotic zone represents one of our planet's largest and least explored biomes. An increasing number of studies evidence the importance of macrofouling species in marine ecosystems, but information on these communities and the factors influencing their structures at mesophotic depths remain poor. This lack of understanding limits our ability to predict anthropogenic impacts or conduct restoration operations in the mesophotic and the lower boundary of the euphotic zones.

Trace elements (TEs) in anaerobic digestion (AD) are known to be essential for optimal biogas production, but inhibitive in excessive concentrations. However, the mechanisms of inhibition are not fully understood. The effects of the addition essential TEs (Co, Cu and Ni) and a non-essential TE (Cd) on the microbial community structure of AD were studied in lab-scale reactors, using total TE concentrations that ranged from 0 to 100 μM.

The digital transformation of pathology, through automation and computational tools, addresses current challenges in the field. This study evaluates Paige Pan Cancer, a novel artificial intelligence tool based on the Virchow foundation model, designed to flag invasive cancer in haematoxylin and eosin-stained slides from 16 primary tissue types. Using 62 cases from the Ipatimup Pathology Laboratory, we found the tool had a sensitivity of 93.

Angiology is a multidisciplinary medical discipline, consequently in some countries multidisciplinary vascular centres were organized, which provide comprehensive management of patients with different vascular diseases. However, the organization of the care for vascular patients differs between the countries. Therefore, we aimed to check the organization of angiology (vascular surgery and vascular medicine) in countries-associate members of IUA and to stimulate the development of multidisciplinary vascular centres.

Introduction: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains the gold standard intervention for stroke prevention in patients with carotid artery stenosis but the surgical technique continues evolving with research being conducted on minimally invasive alternatives. Mini-skin incision CEA has emerged as a more aesthetically appealing and less painful alternative to the traditional technique with a potential impact on main procedural events. We aimed to provide a review of the literature and to compare the mini-skin incision with the traditional approach.

Fatty acids (FAs) are biochemical components of food, essential for human health due to their numerous biological functions. However, many of then if consumed in excess can trigger disfunctions/illness. Therefore, analytical methods, such as gas chromatography (GC-FID) are essential for the accurate identification and quantification of FAs, playing an important role in food safety and quality assessment.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 505 adult asthma patients from Belgium examined the relationship between detailed asthma symptoms reported by patients and their lung function and inflammation levels.
  • Key symptoms analyzed included cough, dyspnea, wheezing, chest tightness, and airway secretion, measured on a five-point scale, revealing several demographic and health-related factors influencing these symptoms.
  • The findings suggest that individualized treatment for asthma could be developed based on the specific symptoms and their associations with various demographic and health indicators.

Accurate knowledge of species distributions is foundational for effective conservation efforts. Bats are a diverse group of mammals, with important roles in ecosystem functioning. However, our understanding of bats and their ecological importance is hindered by poorly defined ranges, mostly as a result of under-recording.

Refreshing is assumed to reactivate the contents of working memory in an attention-based way, resulting in a boost of the attended representations and hence improving their subsequent memory. Here, we examined whether the refreshing-induced memory boost is a constant or a gradual, time-dependent phenomenon. If the beneficial effect of refreshing on memory performance is due to the information being selected for refreshing (i.

Antineoplastic drugs are carcinogens, mutagens, or teratogenic substances, which can pose serious risks to professionals. Concerns about chronic exposure to these hazardous medicinal products (HMPs) have led to their prominence in the EU strategic framework on health and safety at work 2021-2027. To estimate and mitigate human exposure to HMPs, regular monitoring programs and, consequently, reliable, sensitive, multicomponent methods are crucial.

Mining operations contribute to higher environmental contaminant levels, such as particulate matter (PM) hosting potentially toxic elements (PTE). This study aimed to comprehensively characterise atmospheric PM in an environment impacted by former tungsten-tin mining exploration at Regoufe mine (Arouca, Portugal). Although this is a deactivated mine, its location near population clusters and integration into a Geopark belonging to the "World Geoparks Network" with frequent presence of hikers highlight the importance of air quality monitoring to keep its Geopark classification.
