Pulmonary Peripheral Lesions (PPLs) diagnosis is usually performed using a guidance system in combination with bronchoscopes and diagnostic tools. We report two cases of PPLs sampling procedures combining the use of the single-use bronchoscope Ambu aScope 5 Broncho and CIOS 3D Spin Mobile (Siemens Healthineers) fluoroscopy system. A 69-year-old-female was found to have a lesion located in right B6 segment and a 73-year-old-male with a mass in the upper right lobe.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether low-high fidelity medical simulation improves learning and long-lasting retention of pharmacology knowledge, compared to lecture alone, in undergraduate medical students. Ninety students, before a 45-minute lecture, were randomized into three groups - sham (S), low (LF), and high fidelity (HF) simulation - to participate in an interactive simulation session. To evaluate immediate and long-lasting retention, a 20-item structured questionnaire on inotropic agents was administered to 90 students before and after a 45-minute lecture, after simulation, and 3 months later.

Chitosan (CS) membranes obtained by electrospinning are potentially ideal substrates for soft tissue engineering as they combine the excellent biological properties of CS with the extracellular matrix (ECM)-like structure of nanofibrous mats. However, the high amount of acid solvents required to spun CS solutions interferes with the biocompatibility of CS fibres. To overcome this limitation, novel CS based solutions were investigated in this work.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal, dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative disorder due to a pathological expansion of the CAG repeat in the coding region of the HTT gene. In the quest for understanding the molecular basis of neurodegeneration, we have previously demonstrated that the prolyl isomerase Pin1 plays a crucial role in mediating p53-dependent apoptosis triggered by mutant huntingtin (mHtt) in vitro. To assess the effects of the lack of Pin1 in vivo, we have bred Pin1 knock-out mice with Hdh(Q111) knock-in mice, a genetically precise model of HD.

The prion protein (PrP(C)) is a cell surface glycoprotein mainly expressed in neurons, whose misfolded isoforms generate the prion responsible for incurable neurodegenerative disorders. Whereas PrP(C) involvement in prion propagation is well established, PrP(C) physiological function is still enigmatic despite suggestions that it could act in cell signal transduction by modulating phosphorylation cascades and Ca(2+) homeostasis. Because PrP(C) binds neurotoxic protein aggregates with high-affinity, it has also been proposed that PrP(C) acts as receptor for amyloid-β (Aβ) oligomers associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and that PrP(C)-Aβ binding mediates AD-related synaptic dysfunctions following activation of the tyrosine kinase Fyn.
