There is growing evidence that chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment, especially due to vascular damage, blood-brain barrier disruption and uremic toxins. Given the presence of multiple comorbidities, the medication regimen of CKD patients often becomes very complex. Several medications such as psychotropic agents, drugs with anticholinergic properties, GABAergic drugs, opioids, corticosteroids, antibiotics and others have been linked to negative effects on cognition.

Article Synopsis
  • People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often experience cognitive problems due to various factors, including medication side effects.
  • The complexity of treating CKD patients increases due to polypharmacy, as they usually have multiple health issues requiring numerous medications, which raises the risk of adverse drug reactions.
  • The review emphasizes two main points: CKD can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, and impaired kidney function can alter how drugs are processed in the body, leading to higher risks for issues affecting the central nervous system.

Bone fracture healing is a complex biological process involving four phases coordinated over time: hematoma formation, granulation tissue formation, bony callus formation, and bone remodelling. Bone fractures represent a significant health problem, particularly among the elderly population and patients with comorbidities. Therapeutic strategies proposed to treat such fractures include the use of autografts, allografts, and tissue engineering strategies.

After acute kidney injury (AKI), renal function continues to deteriorate in some patients. In a pro-inflammatory and profibrotic environment, the proximal tubules are subject to maladaptive repair. In the AKI-to-CKD transition, impaired recovery from AKI reduces tubular and glomerular filtration and leads to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

A significant amount of research has highlighted the importance of a motor component in the brain's processing of emotional, motivational and social information. Posturography has emerged as an interesting way to assess motor correlates associated with this process. In this review, we highlight recent results within the functional context of painful stimulus perception and discuss the interest in broadening the use of posturography to other motivational and societal functional contexts.

Background: During a cardiac cycle, intracranial pressure is related to arterial entry into the cranium and its interaction with intracranial compliance. The arterial inflow is compensated by intracranial compliance and, initially, the flushing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the cervical subarachnoid spaces. Our objective is to analyze the interactions between intracranial arteriovenous exchange and cerebrospinal fluid oscillations.

Over the past decade, researchers have focused on studying the functional context of perceiving painful stimuli, particularly concerning the posturographic correlates of emotional processing. The aim of this study was to investigate the differential modulation of non-linear measures characterizing postural control in the context of perceiving painful stimuli. The study involved 36 healthy young participants who, while standing, viewed images depicting feet and hands in painful or non-painful situations, both actively (by imagining themselves affected by the situation) and passively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how free breathing impacts cerebral venous flow, which is important for understanding brain circulation and clinical practices.
  • Using two MRI techniques, CINE-PC and RT-PC, researchers measured blood flow in various brain veins of 28 healthy individuals to compare their effectiveness and assess breathing's effect on blood flow.
  • Results indicate that RT-PC is accurate in measuring cerebral venous flow and that breathing significantly alters flow rates, particularly in the jugular veins, providing new insights into cerebral circulation mechanisms.

Low molecular weight sulfated galactan (LMSG) supplemented with octanoyl ester (Oct-LMSG) demonstrated superior wound healing activity compared to the unsupplemented LMSG in a fibroblast wound model. To test the hypothesis that the increased bioactivity of Oct-LMSG may depend on its penetration into the plasma membrane, its cellular uptake was investigated and collagen production in fibroblast cells was assessed for the first time. The cellular uptake of Oct-LMSG was examined using indirect immunofluorescence and a confocal laser scanning microscope.
