Plant cell growth involves coordination of numerous processes and signaling cascades among the different cellular compartments to concomitantly enlarge the protoplast and the surrounding cell wall. The cell wall integrity-sensing process involves the extracellular LRX (LRR-Extensin) proteins that bind RALF (Rapid ALkalinization Factor) peptide hormones and, in vegetative tissues, interact with the transmembrane receptor kinase FERONIA (FER). This LRX/RALF/FER signaling module influences cell wall composition and regulates cell growth.

Article Synopsis
  • Kynurenine, a toxin that increases in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), has been linked to poor cardiovascular health outcomes and mortality.
  • In a study of over 2400 CKD patients, higher levels of serum-free kynurenine were found to increase the risk of cardiovascular events and mortality, independent of other factors.
  • The results suggest that serum-free kynurenine may play a significant role in cardiovascular risks among CKD patients, although it was not linked to overall mortality after adjusting for other compounds.

Objectives: Temocillin is an antibiotic belonging to the β-lactam family, introduced in 1988 but soon forgotten because of its narrow spectrum. Recently, it has been repurposed for its effectiveness against ESBL Enterobacteriaceae, and represents an alternative of choice to carbapenems due to its limited impact on the microbiota.

Patient: We present here a successful case of antibiotic prophylaxis of recurrent ESBL urinary tract infections with subcutaneously administered temocillin.

Article Synopsis
  • Global change has led to notable shifts in plant species within European temperate forests, resulting in both losses and gains of unique evolutionary lineages.
  • The study analyzed 2672 vegetation plots over 40 years, finding that while overall phylogenetic diversity (PD) increased slightly, species lost were more closely related than those gained, suggesting that new species come from a wider range of lineages.
  • Specific plant families like Ericaceae and Fabaceae experienced significant losses, while Amaranthaceae and Rosaceae showed gains, but overall trends in species changes were not strongly linked to larger climatic or nitrogen conditions.

Pendrin (SLC26A4) is an anion exchanger from the SLC26 transporter family which is mutated in human patients affected by Pendred syndrome, an autosomal recessive disease characterized by sensoneurinal deafness and hypothyroidism. Pendrin is also expressed in the kidney where it mediates the exchange of internal HCO for external Cl at the apical surface of renal type B and non-A non-B-intercalated cells. Studies using pendrin knockout mice have first revealed that pendrin is essential for renal base excretion.

Background: BK polyomavirus replication leads to progressive tubulointerstitial nephritis and ureteral stenosis, with a considerable risk of subsequent graft failure in kidney transplant recipients. Since specific antiviral therapies are lacking, new tools are required to enhance the biological monitoring of the infection. Viral microRNAs are promising new biomarkers, but the performance of RT-qPCR methods limits the clinical application and the validation of a standard method for quantification.

Given the risk of rejection, the presence of preformed donor specific antibodies (DSA) contraindicates transplantation in most allocation systems. However, HLA-Cw and -DP DSA escape this censorship. We performed a multicentric observational study, in which the objective was to determinate risk factors of acute antibody-mediated rejection (aABMR) in recipients transplanted with preformed isolated Cw- or DP-DSA.
