Currently, the generation of electrical energy in Cuba is supported by oil and natural gas. These sources, as it is known, are directly linked to large emissions of pollutants that are released into the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to search for new energy options that are directed towards sustainable development, allowing the preservation of natural ecosystems.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a sensitive and fast technique for sensing applications such as chemical trace analysis. However, a successful, high-throughput practical implementation necessitates the availability of simple-to-use and economical SERS substrates. In this work, we present a robust, reproducible, flexible and yet cost-effective SERS substrate suited for the sensitive detection of analytes at near-infrared (NIR) excitation wavelengths.

Although climate-based hypotheses are widely used to explain large-scale diversity patterns, they fall short of explaining the spatial variation among taxonomic groups. Integrating food web and metabolic theories into macroecology is a promising step forward, as they allow including explicit taxon-specific traits that can potentially mediate the relationship between climate and diversity. Our investigation focuses on the role of body size and trophic structure in mediating the influence of contemporary climate and historical climate change on global tetrapods species richness.

Abstract: Leprosy is a chronic, granulomatous, mycobacterial infection caused by mycobacterium leprae, affecting the skin and peripheral nervous system. We present a case of a 13-year-old child with leprosy for more than a year, indicating decompression of the ulnar nerve.

Background: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the influence of the use of chlorhexidine on endodontic instrumentation on the bond strength of glass fiber posts with resin cements. The guiding question of the study was: "Is the bond strength of glass fiber posts greater when using chlorhexidine as an irrigator in endodontic treatment instead of sodium hypochlorite?".
Material And Methods: This study was conducted according to Guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA).

The advent of technological developments is allowing to gather large amounts of data in several research fields. Learning analytics (LA)/educational data mining has access to big observational unstructured data captured from educational settings and relies mostly on unsupervised machine learning (ML) algorithms to make sense of such type of data. Generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) are a supervised statistical learning framework that allows modeling all the parameters of the distribution of the response variable with respect to the explanatory variables.

The objective of this study was to observe patients' satisfaction with their in-service direct anterior dental restorations and to compare it with clinical evaluation using FDI (Federation Dental International) criteria. Patients scored their own anterior dental restorations regarding satisfaction (satisfactory /dissatisfactory). If dissatisfaction was mentioned, then, they would be interviewed about the complaint.

The excess of minerals in the industrial substrates is detrimental for Saccharomyces cerevisiae ethanol fermentation performance. In this work, we sought to understand the effect of some of those minerals on the physiology of Dekkera bruxellensis. Three groups of minerals were classified on the basis of the aerobic growth profiles on glucose: neutrals (K+, Mg2+, P5+ and Zn2+), inducers (Mn2+ and Ca2+) and inhibitors (Al3+, Cu2+ and Fe2+).

Nevertheless, the Raunkiæran shortfall-the dearth of knowledge on species traits and their functionality-presents a challenge in the application of these approaches. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the trends and gaps in trait-based animal ecology in terms of taxonomic resolution, trait selection, ecosystem type, and geographical region.

Freshwater cetaceans play a significant role as sentinel animals, providing important data on animal species and aquatic ecosystem health. They also may serve as potential reservoirs of emerging pathogens and host virulence genes in their microbiota. In this study, we evaluated virulence factors produced by Gram-negative bacteria recovered from individuals belonging to two populations of free-ranging Amazon river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis).

As the world sought the 'Holy Grail' of scarless surgery, minimizing access seemed to be the natural path to follow, and minilaparoscopy (MINI) was considered to be a natural advancement of standard laparoscopy. It aims at minimizing surgical trauma by further reducing the diameter of standard instruments, without compromising range of motion, triangulation or safety. Several different terms have been coined to address this sophisticated reduced-port technique, which is characterized by the use of instruments 3 mm or less in diameter: acuscopic surgery, minilaparoscopy, needlescopic surgery and microlaparoscopy.

This data set was obtained from two ROMS model simulations in the region of Brazil located at 60°W-15°W / 25°S - 15°N. One of the simulations takes into account the tide (obtained from the TPXO7 product) and the other one does not. The rest of the configuration was similar for both simulations, taking bathymetry from ETOPO2 and surface forcings from COADS climatology.

Objective: To evaluate, using semiparametric methodologies of survival analysis, the relationship between covariates and time to death of patients with breast cancer, as well as the determination discriminatory power in the conditional inference tree of patients who had cancer.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data collected from medical records of women who had breast cancer and underwent treatment between 2005 and 2015 at the Hospital da Fundação de Assistencial da Paraíba in Campina Grande, State of Paraiba, Brazil. Survival curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, Cox regression, and conditional decision tree.

The Tropical Atlantic Ocean Database and Monthly Anomalies of River Discharge on Atlantic Ocean datasets encompass the monthly anomalies of a variety of physical, biogeochemical parameters from the tropical Atlantic Ocean and the monthly anomalies of river runoff in the Atlantic Ocean and its adjacent seas. The parameters used as the base for the computation of anomalies come from the TROPFLUX, GPCP, ASCAT, SODA, GODAS, DASK, SeaWiFS, OAFLUX, WAVEWATCH III, NOAA/ESRL 20th Century Reanalysis, GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_BIO_001_029, GLOBAL_REANALYSIS_BIO_001_033, OCEANCOLOUR_GLO_OPTICS_L4_REP_OBSERVATIONS_009_081, OSCAR, SMOS, MODIS-Aqua, CO2_Flux, and GRDC datasets. Several of the anomaly data are redundant, but come from different data sources making comparative studies possible.

Sarcopenia refers to the age-related loss of muscle strength and muscle mass, which is associated with a reduced quality of life, particularly in older females. Resistance training (RT) is well established to be an effective intervention to counter indices of sarcopenia. Accumulating research indicates that the addition of creatine supplementation (Cr) to RT augments gains in muscle strength and muscle mass, compared to RT alone.

The identification of specific biomarkers for Zika infection and its clinical complications is fundamental to mitigate the infection spread, which has been associated with a broad range of neurological sequelae. We present the characterization of antibody responses in serum samples from individuals infected with Zika, presenting non-severe (classical) and severe (neurological disease) phenotypes, with high-density peptide arrays comprising the Zika NS1 and NS2B proteins. The data pinpoints one strongly IgG-targeted NS2B epitope in non-severe infections, which is absent in Zika patients, where infection progressed to the severe phenotype.
