In low-resource settings, resilience to infectious disease outbreaks can be hindered by limited access to diagnostic tests. Here we report the results of double-blinded studies of the performance of paper-based diagnostic tests for the Zika and chikungunya viruses in a field setting in Latin America. The tests involved a cell-free expression system relying on isothermal amplification and toehold-switch reactions, a purpose-built portable reader and onboard software for computer vision-enabled image analysis.

Background: The mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays an important role in innate immunity. Genetically determined variations in serum levels of MBL may influence the susceptibility and clinical outcome of dengue infection in early life.

Methods: We investigated the MBL2 gene polymorphisms and serum levels of MBL (total and functional) in children with asymptomatic (n=17) and symptomatic (n=29) primary dengue infections and age-matched uninfected children (n=84) enrolled in a birth cohort with dengue in Brazil.

Trichosporon yeasts are widely employed to produce lipids, lipases, and aspartic peptidases, but there are no previous studies on collagenase production. This work aimed to select the best collagenase producing Amazonian Trichosporon strains. Moreover, a 2-full factorial design (FFD) and a 2-central composite design combined with Response Surface Methodology were applied to optimize production and find the best conditions for hydrolysis of type I bovine collagen.

Outcomes of cardiac surgical procedures performed by trainees versus consultants: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

August 2023

Department of Congenital Cardiac Surgery, Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Objectives: Cardiac surgery is highly demanding and the ideal teaching method to reach competency is widely debated. Some studies have shown that surgical trainees can safely perform full operations with equivocal outcomes compared with their consultant colleagues while under supervision. We aimed to compare outcomes after cardiac surgery with supervised trainee involvement versus consultant-led procedures.

Mitral valve repair (MVr) restores leaflets coaptation while preserving the patient's own valve. The two main techniques are: (a) chordal replacement ("respect approach"), whereby artificial neochordae are used to resuspend prolapsed segments of the affected leaflet - and (b) leaflet resection ("resect approach"), whereby diseased leaflet segment is resected, and the remaining segments are sutured together. Both techniques of MVr are associated with better long-term results, fewer valve-related complications and lower mortality when compared with mitral valve replacement (MVR).

J Endod

February 2022

Division of Endodontics, Department of Restorative Dentistry, Piracicaba Dental School, State University of Campinas-UNICAMP, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Introduction: The objective of this study was to monitor the effects of chemomechanical preparation (CMP) performed with 6% sodium hypochlorite and calcium hydroxide-based intracanal medication (ICM) on the levels and diversity of bacteria, endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides [LPS]), and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) in root canals of teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis.

Methods: Samples were collected from 10 teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis before CMP (S1), after CMP (S2), and after ICM (S3). The levels of bacteria, LPS, and LTA were assessed by using checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization, LAL Pyrogent 5000, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively.

Aims: Liver fibrosis is the result of an exacerbated wound-healing response associated with chronic liver injury. Interleukin-22 (IL-22) plays a key role in liver disease, through either a protective or an adverse role, depending on the context. The relationship between IL-22 and its receptors IL-22R1 and IL-22BP (soluble inhibitor) in liver fibrosis is unknown.

This technical report describes a novel workflow for complete denture fabrication designed to abbreviate the necessary steps for dental prostheses delivery by using a 3-appointment protocol in which preliminary impressions are made in the first session together with the registration of maxillary lip support, occlusal plane, and reference lines for tooth arrangement. A trial denture is fabricated with conventional or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing procedures and is evaluated in the second appointment for esthetics, the definitive impression, and the maxillomandibular relationship record to provide precise references for definitive denture fabrication.

Although SARS-CoV-2 surface contamination has been investigated in health care settings, little is known about the SARS-CoV-2 surface contamination in public urban areas, particularly in tropical countries. Here, we investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 on high-touch surfaces in a large city in Brazil, one of the most affected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic in the world. A total of 400 surface samples were collected in February 2021 in the City of Recife, Northeastern Brazil.
