The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in global shortages in supplies for diagnostic tests, especially in the developing world. Risk factors for COVID-19 severity include pre-existing comorbidities, older age and male sex, but other variables are likely play a role in disease outcome. There is indeed increasing evidence that supports the role of host genetics in the predisposition to COVID-19 outcomes.

J Clin Exp Dent

September 2023

Associate Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, School of Dentistry, University of Pernambuco (UPE), Recife, Brazil.

Background: The application of forces during orthodontic treatment can induce pulpal calcifications, characterized by the deposition of mineralized tissue in the pulp cavity space, there may be repercussions on dental procedures, especially endodontic treatment. The objective of this article is to map the scientific evidence and any gaps in knowledge regarding the relationship between orthodontics and dental pulp calcifications.

Material And Methods: The study comprised a scoping review whose guiding question was: "What is the scientific evidence of the association between pulpal calcifications and orthodontic treatment?" Two independent reviewers searched the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and the grey literature.

Background: Adequate muscle activity is important for the success of oral rehabilitation: it maintains the integrity of the stomatognathic system and is responsible for chewing movements needed to break, crush and grind food.

Objective: To compare muscle activity using electromyography (EMG) while clenching or chewing soft and/or hard foods among individuals with natural dentition (ND) and edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses.

Methods: This review was conducted until March, 2023, and the research question was "Is the muscle activity of edentulous patients rehabilitated with dental prostheses similar to that of dentate individuals?" A search strategy was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Lilacs, Embase and manual journal searches.

In late 2021, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 called Omicron emerged, replacing Delta worldwide. Although it has been associated with a lower risk of hospitalization and severe forms of COVID-19, there is little evidence of its relationship with specific symptoms and viral load. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between Delta and Omicron variants of concern, viral load, and the occurrence of symptoms in individuals with COVID-19.

Prof. Moraes Rego, 1235, Cidade Universitária, CEP, 50670-900 Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Electronic address:

The epithelium recovery of skin-burned wounds has been currently achieved by several therapies, for example, hydrogel-based dressings and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the healing activity of Cassia grandis seeds' galactomannan gel, associated or not with PBMT, in second-degree burns. Sixty male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups: Control (CG), Gel (GG), Laser/PBMT (LG), and Laser+Gel (GLG).
