Article Synopsis
  • This study explored muscle pain in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) using various diagnostic tools, including thermography, algometry, and EMG, to examine the relationship between muscle pain and muscle activity.
  • Researchers found that symptomatic muscles showed lower temperature and less hyperactivity at rest, indicating that pain may be associated with hypoactivity instead of hyperactivity of the muscles.
  • The study suggests that treatments should focus on addressing the neurophysiological factors that affect muscle recruitment in patients with TMD-related muscle pain.

Statement Of Problem: Cementation is one of the most critical steps that influence the failure rates of indirect restorations. Self-adhesive resin cements arose out of the need for technical simplification of this procedure to reduce the risk of operative errors, with good acceptance by clinicians. How the failure rate of indirect single-tooth restorations cemented with self-adhesive resin cements compares with the failure rate of those cemented conventionally is unclear.

The advanced stage at diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) may be related to individual factors, socioeconomic conditions, and healthcare service availability. The objective of the study was to analyze the prevalence of advanced stage CRC at the time of diagnosis and its association with individual, contextual, socioeconomic, and healthcare service indicators. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted, analyzing cases of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectum in individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 99 years, diagnosed between 2010 and 2019 in Brazil (n = 69,047).

The effect of electromyographic (EMG) activity on agonist muscles during exercises performed on stable and unstable surfaces remains uncertain. We aimed to review the literature regarding the comparison of the EMG activity of the agonist muscles of exercises performed on stable and unstable surfaces. Eighty-six studies that evaluated the EMG activity of 1783 individuals during exercises for the lower limbs, upper limbs, and core were included.

Nanocarriers of antigen proteins for vaccine delivery.

Int J Pharm

June 2024

Graduate Program in Applied Cellular and Molecular Biology (PGBCMA), Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Pernambuco (UPE), 50100-130, Recife, PE, Brazil.

Nanoformulations in vaccinology provide antigen stability and enhanced immunogenicity, in addition to providing targeted delivery and controlled release. In the last years, much research has been focused on vaccine development using virus-like particles, liposomes, emulsions, polymeric, lipid, and inorganic nanoparticles. Importantly, nanoparticle interactions with innate and adaptive immune systems must be clearly understood to guide the rational development of nanovaccines.

Here, we presented a second-order scattering sensor based on the ZnLaO compound (LaZnO) for selective and stable detection of glycated albumin (GA, glycemic long-term biomarker). The LaZnO sample was obtained through the co-precipitation method and then characterized using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, the selectivity, molecular interference, temporal stability, and pH effects of the LaZnO SOS signal in the absence and presence of GA were investigated.

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of plasma-based liquid biopsy for the detection of the BRAF V600E mutation in circulating cell-free DNA from patients with ameloblastoma.

Methods: This is a prospective diagnostic accuracy study conducted based on the Standards for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy recommendations. The index test was the plasma-based liquid biopsy, whereas the reference standard was the conventional tissue biopsy.

Statement Of Problem: The demand to streamline workflow while increasing patient comfort and satisfaction in the manufacturing of removable complete dentures (CDs) is growing, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology has gained prominence. However, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the clinical performance and patient-related outcome measures (PROMs) of digitally fabricated complete dentures is lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether digitally fabricated CDs improve the clinical performance and PROMs compared with conventionally fabricated CDs.

Objectives: We aimed to develop a reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) platform for the rapid detection of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in both patient and mosquito samples from Brazil.

Methods: We optimized an RT-LAMP assay and then evaluated the specificity and sensitivity using visual detection. In comparison with the RT-qPCR reference method, we validated the utility of this assay as a molecular diagnostic test in a reference laboratory for arbovirus diagnostics using 100 serum samples collected from suspected CHIKV cases.

Changes in the expression of nuclear β-catenin are responsible for tumorigenesis. Beta-catenin acts synergistically with the TGF-β/BMPs pathway. This interaction leads to greater dentin deposition and may explain the differences between distinct tooth morphologies and hamartomas.

Aims: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and acceptance of children and their parents of the Hall technique (HT) for dental rehabilitation in pediatric dentistry.

Background: The approach of the HT is that of minimally invasive treatment of the dental element and is used exclusively on primary molars. Various studies in the literature point to HT as a restorative option well accepted by children and parents and quite predictable, with low retreatment rates and good cost-effectiveness for the management of primary molars with carious lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review aimed to evaluate the methods used to assess heart rate variability (HRV) in individuals recovering from COVID-19 after the acute phase.* -
  • The review included studies from several databases and focused on those using linear and non-linear HRV assessment methods, excluding low-quality or irrelevant studies, and found that 24-hour Holter monitoring and 12-lead ECG were the primary tools used.* -
  • Results indicated that about half of the studies showed autonomic dysfunction post-COVID-19, with a predominance of cardiac sympathetic modulation, and the overall methodological quality of the included studies was reasonable.*
