Background: Reproductive efficiency is paramount in the dairy industry, where early pregnancy detection of dairy cows will allow to detect the non-pregnant animals early, thus enabling to re-synchronize them and getting them pregnant leading to decrease in calving interval, which, in turn, is critical for maximizing productivity and economic gain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the colour Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) and peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs)-based pregnancy-associated biomarker mRNAs expression for the earliest detection of pregnancy status in the dairy cows at post insemination. Intensively managed animals were ovulation synchronized and subjected to timed artificial insemination (TAI).

Background: Dengue is a devastating viral disease transmitted by mosquito vectors of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Mosquito populations thrive in favourable breeding conditions, making mosquito control vital. Eliminating larval populations is the most effective method compared with other mosquito control methods.

Background: Reninoma is a rare cause of secondary hypertension, which can be cured with surgery if identified early before any target organ damage occurs. It leads to hypokalaemia and hypertension and typically responds well to treatment with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockers. However, confirmation of the diagnosis and the localisation of this rare culprit lesion can be challenging.

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic disorder associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. While GDM is diagnosed by oral glucose tolerance testing between 24-28 weeks, earlier prediction of risk of developing GDM via circulating biomarkers has the potential to risk-stratify women and implement targeted risk reduction before adverse obstetric outcomes. This scoping review aims to collate biomarkers associated with GDM development, associated perinatal outcome and medication requirement in GDM.

Objectives: For healthcare professionals (HCPs) to provide optimal support for women experiencing domestic violence (DV), it is important to understand what type of support women expect from HCPs. The objective of this study was to explore what kind of support women who experienced DV in Sri Lanka expect from HCPs.

Design: A qualitative descriptive design was used.

Electronic address:

Groundwater is an important source of drinking water in rural areas. In this study, the performance of water purificat ion in a rural water station equipped with nanofiltration (NF) membranes based groundwater source was investigated, as well as the contamination morphology, foulant composition and distribution characteristics of NF membrane. Results showed that significant differences of membrane foulants were observed in different sections of NF membrane.

Thermogenic adipose tissues: promising therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases: Thermogenic fats and obesity.

J Nutr Biochem

December 2024

Department of Nutritional Sciences, Lubbock, TX,; Obesity Research Institute, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX; Institute for One Health Innovation, Texas Tech University and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Lubbock, TX,. Electronic address:

The ongoing increase in the prevalence of obesity and its comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and dyslipidemia warrants discovery of novel therapeutic options for these metabolic diseases. Obesity is characterized by white adipose tissue expansion due to chronic positive energy balance as a result of excessive energy intake and/or reduced energy expenditure. Despite various efforts to prevent/reduce obesity including lifestyle and behavioral interventions, surgical weight reduction approaches and pharmacological methods, there has been limited success in significantly reducing obesity prevalence.

Article Synopsis
  • Nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in leaves relate to photosynthesis and respiration, influencing plant strategies.
  • A study involving 114 species showed that total NSC concentrations varied widely but generally didn't correlate with leaf gas exchange or economic traits.
  • However, species with higher photosynthesis had shorter NSC residence times, indicating that daily carbon gain is mainly exported rather than stored.

  • The study investigates the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of the extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) ST131 strain in humans and dogs in Sri Lanka.
  • Researchers analyzed 215 ExPEC isolates, primarily from humans, finding that 61.8% were ST131, with notable resistance rates to important antibiotics, including carbapenems.
  • The findings highlight the need for a One Health approach to monitor antibiotic resistance and indicate significant resistance trends in ExPEC across different populations in Sri Lanka.

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, National Engineering Laboratory for Animal Breeding, Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing, 100193, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers sequenced 470 genomes of domesticated river and swamp buffaloes and their wild ancestors to investigate the genetic factors influencing domestication and productivity in Asian water buffaloes.* -
  • Wild swamp buffaloes maintain ancestral morphology, while river buffaloes show distinct traits, yet both have genomes that align closely with wild counterparts; genetic diversity varies significantly across regions.* -
  • Key findings indicate that artificial selection has led to significant genetic adaptations in traits like reproduction, milk production, and coat color, highlighting how domestication affects evolutionary changes in these animals.*

  • Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are involved in communication between and within species by transferring biomolecules; plant-derived EVs, in particular, show promise as biomarkers and are useful in various industries, but a detailed characterization of these vesicles is necessary for future applications.* -
  • The study focused on isolating EVs from hydroponically grown potato plants, observing similarities in morphology between EVs from roots and peels, while noting that root-derived EVs were larger and contained a higher concentration of proteins.* -
  • Analysis revealed that most proteins found in root and peel EVs were different, with both types showing enrichment in pathways related to stress responses, indicating that EVs may serve defensive roles in plants and

Intentional and unintentional pesticide poisoning is an important public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Individuals who have been exposed to toxic pesticides, particularly organophosphorus insecticides, need early treatment. Atropine autoinjector devices offer a potential solution, allowing storage of effective treatment near agricultural workers' fields and homes that could be reached within minutes by the worker or fellow villagers to provide first-line emergency care.

Following the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster off the coast of Sri Lanka, a stranded spinner dolphin () was recovered, and the cause of death was investigated. Post-mortem examinations revealed evidence of by-catch, but a natural coinfection with dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) and gammaherpesvirus was detected by further analyses, marking the first documented case of a dual viral infection in this species within the region. Molecular diagnostics, including PCR and sequencing, were performed on tissue imprints collected on FTA cards, confirming the presence of DMV in the prescapular lymph node and gammaherpesvirus in the lesions in the oral cavity.
